Do you do deep breathing exercises?
" breathing properly, experts say, can reduce stress and anxiety, improve mental focus and athletic performance, help control high blood pressure and mend other health problems....Short, shallow breathing causes a cascade of negative effects in the body, and the body associates that with the fight-or-flight response," says Al Lee, co-author (with Don Campbell) of the 2009 book "Perfect Breathing." "It gins up the adrenaline, the cortisol, the stress chemicals."
I just read an article in todays paper, really made me think.
In the past week two people I know died of a massive heart attack, both were in their 50's.
I sit at my desk a lot. I try to get up and do some cardio periodically but lately I've caught myself either holding my breath while working or breathing very shallow breaths.
Reading this article was just a reminder that I need to remember to breathe! Doing deep breathing exercises while at your desk, driving, watching tv or whatever is easy and can be more beneficial to our health and mind than we realize!
Try it and tell me you don't feel better.
Here's the article Better breathing can mean better health - San Jose Mercury News

"Here's a simple exercise he calls "the six-second breath"; it can help you master deep breathing and calm down in stressful situations, he says.
Inhale for 2 seconds, visualizing the breath moving through your body to your tailbone and in all directions.
Hold for 1 second.
Exhale for 2 seconds, attempting to empty the lungs from bottom to top.
Hold for 1 second.
Repeat.
Practice for at least 5 minutes a day, more often if you can."

I find these breathing exercises very useful. I did them once and I feel better already. I will try to repeat them every day. Thank you for motivating me to try a new way to relax!

So true, correct breathing is something that many of us (including myself) don't put much attention into. Guess it's time for us to make the change right?

And for me, there is no better way to allow myself a chance to breathe than to walk away from my desk and take my children for a walk. The fresh air in my lungs helps to relieve stress, and my children are my greatest reminders that it's also important to stop and smell the roses. They literally make me stop and smell roses as we take an hour to walk to the end of our block, but I love it.

Hey, I love this Chee-Gung stuff. Whenever you get tense or frustrated, your breathing gets tight and shallow. I would go far as to say that breath control has more of an immediate therapeutic effect on you than any other conscious act.

  • I reserve most of my deep breathing exercises for during my daily walk. I find that 4 seconds in through the nose and 4 seconds out through the nose works best for me.
It is a great stress reliever and respiratory strength builder.
