When I was 6 years old, my mom always told me that happiness was the key
to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I
grew up. I wrote down "happy". They told me I didn't understand the assignment
and I told them they didn't understand life.

Do all the things that makes you happy

Wow, weirdest thing, same story happened to John Lennon, only he was 5 .

I think happiness can't be described. But it's probably the purpose of most of our actions.

I think happiness is different for different people. Happiness to me would include a loving family, a comfortable bank account, and a low stress lifestyle. Oh, and a nice car collection not unlike Leno's...

Happiness is a state of mind we choose to walk in.

We all have the ability to choose to be happy no matter the circumstances. Even in bad times you can still be happy if you choose to focus on the good and not the bad.

I recommend that every one choose happiness because life is just too short to be anything but happy.

I couldn't agree more. I know of many very wealthy people who are miserable (paid off mortgages, and all). It's truly something that has to come from within. Money certainly helps make life easier, but as the old cliche saying goes, I don't believe that money buys happiness.

Give me God given joy which has no dependency on circumstance; that emanates from within and carry us even when life is at its bleakest.

I've tried happiness. Joy is better.

I agree with you Beau, however, I personally can't separate the two. I mean they compliment each other.

I don't see how I could be joyful without being happy and happy with out having joy. Actually, those two words are synonyms for one another.

I have had it and lost it several times. Anyone who tells you money has nothing to do with happiness is right and wrong. Money allows you the peace of mind and freedom to do things which you enjoy without having to worry about money. I have lived with and without as a professional poker player who had it all for several years, and then lost everything in a matter of a few months.. Life is better with. Im going to be attempting and writing about my life comeback story shortly. Just trying to learn some stuff from here first!

Happiness, it depends to what makes one happy. It can be material things, can be achieving what you want to achieve or becoming who you want to be. No matter what it is, happiness is getting what you want or need in life.

Thats a nice thinking from you. But now a days people consider money, the key to all happiness but they don't realize that money can't buy everything. The key of happiness lies within one's own contentment.

I spent all of my adult life (up until last year) asking what happiness is.

    Then I started meditating.

I soon after learned that happiness comes truly from within. Happiness is not a state of
mind but a state of being. Life has many days that suck, but we can choose--or not choose--
    to be happy.

So happiness is simply choosing to be happy. Ironically we can even be happy while sad.

One of my favorite quotes of all time. Another one that I really love was by the Dalai Lama: when asked about the what surprised him most about humanity, the dalai lama said "Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die; and then he dies having never really lived"

Aristotle discusses one's emotional state in the short term as a kind of happiness, and one's success in life in general as a kind of happiness. His understanding of the details is wrong in many places, but let's work with his categories.

    Short Term- Joy:
When something happens to a person, three things occur:
    1. the event
    2. the person's evaluation of the event
    3. emotions arising from that evaluation

You only control #2. So remember the following:
    1. Even if we can't understand His Will, God is perfectly good. Therefore everything happens for the best. Therefore this that just happened is for the best, even if I don't understand how it was for the best. (Yes, there is evil, death, disease, war etc. But everything that happens to a person contributes to his own personal greatest good, spiritually if not physically.)
    2. Think of things to be thankful for about the present situation: 'How fortunate I am to have such a caring friend'... 'At least nobody got hurt in the car accident'.... 'True, I was injured, but at least I am alive.'... 'This long line is a great opportunity to grow by working on the virtue of patience.'... 'Dinner didn't come out the way I wanted it to, but at least I have food to eat. Some people are starving to death right now.'
    3. There are many bad things in the world to focus on and many good things in the world to focus. Only focus on the bad things when practically necessary to learn how to handle situations in the future, improve one's character by repenting for misdeeds etc. Otherwise think about the good.

    Long Term - Happiness:
    1. Living with the purpose of connecting to God, doing as much good as possible in your short time in this existence.
    2. Appreciating that each and every moment, and each and every stage of life, is for the ultimate good.
    3. Guard yourself from doing evil.
    4. Prioritize God, the moral good, family, friends over money, pleasure, ego etc.
    5. Remember that when you die you only bring with you your good deeds. Your clothing, house, car etc do not accompany you.

Remember the Following Rules about Physical Pleasure:
    1. The anticipation of a physical pleasure is always greater than the pleasure itself.
    2. Physical pleasure cannot satisfy the soul's real desire, which is connection to God.
    3. One's enjoyment of a physical pleasure declines with time- the first bite of the steak is always better than the second, and the second better than the third and so on. And the first full steak you eat is better than the second and so on.

Spiritual Pleasure, the pleasure of connecting to the One God Who sustains all of existence at every moment, Who manages everything that happens, Who does endless kindness for all of His creations, is always better than anticipated, in what it brings about in this world and the next.

Since connection to God, the Creator of the Universe, is absolutely central to your purpose in life, one of the worst things you can do is pray to anybody other than your Creator. For such prayer distances you from your Creator and is totally false.
