My Life Story (Poker Pro Gone Broke). What To Do With It.

8 years ago I started playing poker online and killing it. Made a ton of money, travelled the world, did all kinds of things, and then got married and had kids. Poker then all of the sudden seemed much tougher, and I lost all that I had invested and more. (Have owed credit cards about 120k for 3 years or so). Ended up getting a day job, making just enough money to pay rent, and normal bills. Obviously can not do anything on credit anymore. Credit card companies aren't doing too much, because I don't have any assets, and they see like they will settle for probably around 20k combined to get it all off of my record. Anyways, I am coming up on a pretty unique opportunity. We are having another baby, and I qualify for 9 months of parental leave. I have a really good understanding of wordpress, blogging, and a beginners knowledge of SEO.
Anyways, during this 9 months I intend to make this 20k plus get myself established with a decent income stream from this internet marketing gig. Would like to not have to go back to my scraping by day job, and get myself to some tropical place where I can do the things I love. Surfing, diving, etc.
Im considering making a modest return to poker playing. Set very strict limits and blog about my comeback. Sign up with poker affiliate sites and advertise those. Would like it to be much more multi faceted though.
Any ideas you can throw out would be awesome!

That sounds great. Maybe write a book and put it on Amazon's Kindle store. Your story sounds interesting.

Nine months is a long time! It's a good thing that you have come to this forum. A common saying is that it takes 1000 hours to become an expert in a subject matter. In these 9 months it is very possible that you could become an expert in Internet Marketing.

Read through the threads on here. Establish the direction you would like to proceed in (There are many ways to make money via IM). At the end of this, you may not need your day job anymore.

One thing you must remember is to Take Action! The number of people who never take action is staggerring. Do not fall into that trap.

All the best and if you have any questions, shoot!

    - Martin.

Ive been thinking about the book idea.. Although I have a million stories, I think it would be much better if the book included a return to glory. How I beat the odds, credit card companies, internet marketing, etc.

I'm new to IM, not a poker PRO, but poker seems more simple to me.
If you where good at poker, you just need to find your balance again.
I never heard of a PRO Poker Player that went broke, that's the key I guess, that's the limit that separates PRO from amateurs, knowing when to stop.

why not teach poker online? Perhaps write some kindle books on the subject. If you get deep into the subject there could be many books on the different aspects and approaches to the game. And why stop at TH? There is more than just holdem. Break it down so you can get in-depth into each, creating several books in your portfolio.

I (Miles) come from a poker family and have family members who have been 'pro' for 4+ decades and family members who went pro for a few years and got tired of the 5 figure bankroll swings and gave it up for day-job.

I still play tournaments for fun (and family games around the holidays), but 'pro' poker is a GRIND. Internet marketing is so much less time consuming.

One other thing I will say is that there is nothing like a bad streak of cards.... They can last for YEARS. And, when the cards go cold, there is nothing you can do but hope your bankroll can wait it out... (or go deeper into debt, I guess). Kinda' fitting metaphor for life, eh?

Ok, here's the plan.... Pay off your debt and achieve your 'success' (a lifestyle that allows you to surf, dive, raise your family on your terms vs. working in a cubicle) then publish a kindle book about your journey.

I can see it now... The epic tale of personal development that went from highs at the poker table to depression-inducing lows and 6 figures in debt... Then the come-back was on, arising from the ashes you went on to...... (its ultimately your story)!

Throw a montage in there and you've got a movie pitch, lol

After you finish the book, build a platform via a WordPress blog and you can start 2nd career as a personal development / motivational speaker and migrate into the human potential movement if you'd like.

Remember, tho... You don't have to pay everything off with poker to make this plan work... But if you want to run a successful poker blog or create/sell poker info-products you will need to get momentum back on your side, at least.

    Best of luck!

Since you are good at poker, it would be a good idea to play your hand again but, like you said, keep it within limits. Of course you can blog about it, giving tips on how to make a killing in it. You've been there, you can go back again.

I can understand what you've gone through buddy. I used to gamble but on a smaller scale...those dam fruit machines. I used to win and then lose it all, never ate properly, never slept properly and was determined to win back my losses. That certainly didn't help as I lost more money the next day. Addiction in anything can ruin lives. I lost my job, started hitting the bottle and was severely depressed.

The only way I came off the addiction was when I saw a 'Children in Need' Appeal on the BBC in London. It made me think how these poor kids in hospitals were suffering. From that day onwards, I never went to the fruit machine shops and instead put away a few pounds (£'s) each day for that charity. I realized that what I was doing was terrible wrong and why not put the money I was spending on gambling for a noble cause.

Basically I went to hell and back. All I need now is for someone to show me how to earn $100 per day so that I can start living again and give more to the Children in need charity.
