Hi, how many have you do internet marketing FULL time and nothing else? No 9-5, no part time job just internet marketing?

I've stumbled upon my biggest challenge. The girlfriend. She's afraid that this type of business will not last in the long run. Having a "stable" job with benefits will make her happy.

What's your take?

That's me all the way. I jumped in and I'm making a good income. But my wife is a little resentful that I get to work from home and pretty much make my own hours while she has to go to an office.

There is a point to that, but no job is "stable". It's just an illusion. You could be fired at any time and loose all of that. At least having your own business, you'll never get fired. Yes, there will be tough times, but through time, you'll build up enough revenue streams to support you. I wish I did a lot of things differently, but you live and you learn.

The point is, nothing is ever "stable". But I'd rather be doing something unstable that makes me happy than something unstable that make me unhappy.

In a 9-5 the company controls you and your income. In your business, only you are the limiting factor.

Now I don't suggest you be full time if you can't support yourself, definitely do it on the side. But if you make enough in IM to do it full time then it's much better for you and your significant other.

I have been married for almost 28 years to a very supportive wife. I have been doing Internet marketing full time since 2006. I'm lucky that my wife does not care what I do as long as I make money and pay the bills.

Seriously, I have always tried to keep her informed about what I am doing online. She knows I work hard at it and appreciates the results.

    Hey GGpaul,

I have just got started with IM & this is actually my first post!

I highly recommend that you read Steve Pavlina's article on this exact topic. He explores what a typical conversation would be like between someone who is involved with Internet Marketing & someone who would rather take the "stable" job approach. Maybe you and your girlfriend could divide the parts and read it together

I can't post links yet as this is my first post, but if you Google "Steve Pavlina jobs vs passive income" it should take you right there.

    Hope this helps!

I think you should do what makes YOU happy Do what makes your heart sing, instead of looking for the most 'secure' option. A 'stable' job can also turn out to be not so stable after all. Same with IM: you can never be sure how things turn out in the future. The most important thing is to have a pleasant life in the meantime.

As long as you're making buckets of money, it's all good!
Just make sure you invest it in things outside the online spectrum. Such as real estate and stuff, there's your "stability" right there!

She's right. For this type of job to be stable you should be consistent.

I have just started my own business and quit my job. I'm a risk-taker.

Keep a job till you have good cashflow coming from your own businesses (online or off). Then quit your day job. Women value security more than anything else. And she has been raised (mostly) to believe that regular job provides financial security more than a business does. So nothing will change that - except seeing money coming from your business. Don't rush.

    Good luck.

Depends on how much you need per month. If you need over 3k a month, then its really a challenge to quit your job, but it is doable.

Having a steady income with a 9 to 5 job is sweet, but who wouldn't like to be their own boss. I would deffinately recommend to aim for freedom either online or offline.

There are many ways to make a living with just 10 hours of work per week offline also. All you need is a plan and motivation to stick to it.

It's not the girlfriend you need to convince. If all of your income is based on organic traffic (referring to your review sites) you are tied to whatever algo changes come out. Sure, get it while the gettin is good, but these algos are known to change a lot and change often.

If you had a mortgage and kids, would you of have your family's well being rely on this business model? As for any job, can you pick up the pieces, find a new venture, start over, etc. if this one fails?

It depends on how much you can save for bad time. If you think you are earning enough to get support when internet marking falls, no need to hesitate to do internet marketing full time. Otherwise, your girlfriend is right. On the other hand, if a full time job gives me a better and comfortable life, why should we experiment something that is not relatively stable? Try to be your own Judge.
