Big Goals Or Small Goals - What do you think?

there is a pretty big discussion today'

some people say set small realistic goals

some people say set large goals

I personally go for large goals, I was just shy of a six figure income last year, with a goal of 350k

this year I set a goal for 1.2 million, I just dont get motivated for small goals, even though I was short of my goal I still almost cleared 6 figures,

so even if I fall short of 1.2 million I will still be making a ton of money

the reason I choose large goals, is simply for the fact that I put my subconscious mind to work for me so it is always looking for, ways that I can make 1.2 million dollars this year

Ideas are hitting me all the time, and I am currently in the process of starting a solar energy company, I mentioned the idea to a friend and 2 weeks later I had received 10,000 dollars in investment money from some people who wanted to help me get it off the ground.

I believe that if you set small goals, you will only find means to make small amounts of money,

what do you think?

  • Hello Nicholas B.

I don't mean to completely disagree with you on your view of setting small/big goals however I think there is a few ways you can look at it.

I think one should set small goals when working on a venture so that you don't feel overwhelmed in the amount of work ahead of them.

I think its more helpful if you say "I'm going to create a concept design for my product launch" instead of saying something like "I will create the design in 1 week and start making $xxxx in one month)...

There is nothing wrong with saying, my goal is to make XXXXX this year, but I personally wouldn't be able to achieve a six figure if I didn't set small goals in front of myself.

I agree, I would like to her more opinions on this, because I don't think there is one way to set goals.

everyone is different, you do have to think that you can achieve your goals though, can I make 1.2 million dollars next month no

but I honestly do think that I can do it in a year

If you want to make 100k in a year it is possible though, it is all about reinvesting,

All of my goals I set I start out big, then break it into small goals, daily weekly and monthly,

I am not talking about cash goals, when I set daily weekly and monthly goals, they are the things that I must do in order to make money, if it is setting up jv's writing articles shooting videos, or setting up shop in a mall to advertise my offline business.

All of the money I make online I use to start offline businesses, and create jobs, wheter it is installers, or sales people for my solar energy company, or lanlords and maitnence guys for my rental properties

nobody can just say "ok I am gonna make a million dollars today" with out a plan and daily goals.

    Hi Sir,

I am a swimmer and I would say both Big and Small goals are important to climb to success. This is what i have experienced throughout my year of training.

Well Big goals are there to give you a clear picture of what you want in the end. Like they always say, start with the end in mind. You must know what you want to achieve to be able to achieve it ultimately. You must have a direction.

Small goals are there as a stepping stone, to keep you motivated and driven to work towards your goal. They are also there so that taking the next step doesn't seem so scary. When you achieve your small goals you know you are one step closer to your Big goal. And you feel good.

You can then slowly work up to your Big and final goal. This is what i have learnt from my journey of crazy training. So both big and small goals are important for success in my opinion!

      I agree entirely.

A BIG goal is really nothing more than the sum total of a series of small goals. Both have
their place. The journey of 1,000 miles (big goal) begins with the first step (small goal).

My input....is to set a target rather than a goal.....a goal can be limiting...what if you could create more than the goal.....where as a target is something you are always aiming for......ro some people, the energy of a goal is negative, where as working toward a target feels lighter.......

I honestly don't think you have to separate the two, the two being big goals and small goals. I personally make big goals like winning the Heisman Trophy, winning a national championship, going undefeated, etc. Those are huge goals, but to achieve those enormous goals, smaller goals must be completed. Like, workout today = a high level of play = the Heisman Trophy and Go undefeated which = winning every game, including the national championship. So you can see how big goals are almost always composed of a multitude of smaller goals. Almost without fail. So why not on the road to the large goals check off the smaller goals to show yourself that you're moving in the right direction and making progress? Just my thoughts.

Honestly, it is difficult to seggregate the two. In fact, the big or the end goal can only be achieved by the cummulative effect of the sumounted small goals.

      Great discussion, guys!

This really comes down to the type of person you are. Some people would choke if they set really big goals. They would become so overwhelmed with "how" to achieve the goal that they wouldn't do anything at all. Like a deer in the headlights.

Others, like you Nick, can't get motivated by smaller goals - you need the juice of the really big achievements to keep you going.

There's nothing wrong with either approach, just what works for you! Personally I like both. I get juiced by the really big goals, but I also like to focus on one step at a time. So I've usually got some short-term smaller goals I'm working on, but also big ideas for "ultimate goals" I'd like to achieve in my lifetime.

The universe doesn't differentiate between small and big dreams. What you want is what you get. If you constantly worry you will get more things to worry about. If you are always happy you will find more things to be happy about.

I go for the big dreams and the small dreams. There are no time limits on dreams just the thoughts you put into them. If you think about one thing more than the other then the most thought about thing will happen sooner.

You are the one in control of your life, no one else can make you happy if you can't make yourself happy. Your dreams are yours and yours alone, make your dreams a reality by keeping them alive, no matter what the size of your dreams are.

I for one believe setting small goals in the beginning allow you to accomplish bigger goals later, for example: a product I developed will soon allow me to accuire the wealth I desire in life. But I could not get there without first setting the goal to create this product... which was easy for me to achieve very quickly... and now I'll set my next goal inorder to take me to next level.

What works for me is setting big goals and then small chunking them into manageable steps. Mind Mapping is a great tool for doing this.

    I agree about setting both.

I believe in having BIG, almost undreamable, GOALS, and having smaller step-by-step goals to help me achieve the big goal.

I like to use the analogy of the Appalachian Trail (which I hiked GA->ME in 2006) for goal setting when I talk with people about it. When I started in Georgia, Maine seemed so far away, so I just set daily goals for the next week and the next town. This included daily miles and the next place to rest me head. Also the numerous places to stop to eat. This made each day and week easy since I had a plan prepared.

Over time, Maine became a thought in the back of my mind until I hit Vermont and by then, Mt Katahdin in Maine was no longer a dream, but a date.

Write the big goal down, then break it down into smaller goals and eventually you will make it. That's just my two cents.

      I go big and hard!
If you aim at the moon the worst that can happen is you fall among the stars - still pretty good in the big scheme! then when you move forward again you are starting from almost there!

I do agree though, that in achieving big goals you have and are achieving many small ones along the way - whether you saw them as small goals or just the process to the big one!

I have enjoyed this thread, thanks!

I have a solution that incorporates both short and long term goals. It is a method called Mind Mapping. (I was unable to include a map with this post, I don't know how it is done).

A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged radially around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid in study, organization, problem solving, decision making, and writing.

The elements of a given mind map are arranged intuitively according to the importance of the concepts, and are classified into groupings, branches, or areas, with the goal of representing semantic or other connections between portions of information. Mind maps may also aid recall of existing memories.

By presenting ideas in a radial, graphical, non-linear manner, mind maps encourage a brainstorming approach to planning and organizational tasks. Though the branches of a mindmap represent hierarchical tree structures, their radial arrangement disrupts the prioritizing of concepts typically associated with hierarchies presented with more linear visual cues. This orientation towards brainstorming encourages users to enumerate and connect concepts without a tendency to begin within a particular conceptual framework.
The mind map can be contrasted with the similar idea of concept mapping. The former is based on radial hierarchies and tree structures denoting relationships with a central governing concept, whereas concept maps are based on connections between concepts in more diverse patterns.

You need to set both short term, and long term goals. Monetary or possession, and relaxing goals. Personally I am a lot more motivated if I set goals weekly, or even daily. Even if your goals are just a todo list more than anything, always have a plan for what you want to do each and every day.

Weather or not big goals or small goals work better for you EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE AWARE that if they absolutely needed to make 1 million dollars in 1 month IT IS POSSIBLE. The problem with most is they do not TRY.

For the love of not god but ones self. A person needs to realize their TRUE potential. This isn't self help BS this is real. You DO have the ability to achieve anything you set your mind to. You are NOT TRYING HARD ENOUGH.

A dream and a goal is not the same thing. You use goals to manifest your dream.
I think you should use both big and small goals. Big goals like making 10K a month in 6 month time, can be split up in tiny daily step-by-step goals.
When you combine goals on every aspect of your life, then you have the blueprint on mainfesting your dream :-)

I think it is important to have big goals, but for the new marketers or anyone starting out in the internet business, it is best to have small goals. My reason for this is if you have large goals and your not hitting them (which usually happens as a new marketer) you will get discouraged and give up. Which is why most people fail in IM. So start small achieve those goals then set a goal a little bit higher etc.

    Hi Nic,
I believe, that goals are goals and you are there to put energy in achieving them. If they are believable for you, they are easier to follo and achieve. If not, it might take too much time. I think having big goals is anyway a greatthing because it opens up your mind and shows what power one can have.
    Thanks for this post!

    Allicin,

Interesting that you just revived this thread today. I literally just uploaded a video to youtube that I shot with Brad Gosse this morning. We were discussing this very issue.

Personally, I love setting huge goals because it forces me to take big action and develop myself/my skills more quickly. Here is the video for my thoughts...

ya, I definitely personally agree with you.

But I think small goals are used as a jump start...for example: If someone just gets into a field or has recently discovered the power of goals they might get discouraged if they start out huge!! It's just not like them to think big so they end up throwing it away.

With that said...small goals really limit potential...a bunch...like unfathomably limit potential. And the big goals are how we keep our eyes on the prize. How we keep our drive and don't get lost along the way.

If you only have your big goals in line then setting smaller goals gives you more of a perspective and a more sound structure to work within.

So it just depends on where someone's at I guess. I would personally recommend both. That's what I'm still doing and it's working out very well. I'm starting small but thinking huge. I'm aligning my current goal(1M) with my smaller goals and making sure they work in harmony. I broke everything down into steps....from the bottom up.

I've always been a dreamer, until lately. Cause getting yourself big goals, sets you up a lot of times for failure in achieving them.

What you have to do is yes, have a BIG goal, which is a long term goal, broken down into mini goals so you set yourself up to succeed in the long term and to reach your big goal along them way

Exactly right. The big goals get you fired up, the little goals keep you moving toward your target.

If my goal is to make a million dollars and I don't have any short term goals, I'm just going to end up day dreaming about my million bucks. But if I have short term goals that act as stepping stones to that million, then I've got stuff to do today and it's time to get busy!
