I think this can be said to fall under success and power so I hope it is alright to post this here.

I saw this post on Chris' site and it really made me think hard.

The Art of Non-Conformity » How to Write 300,000 Words In 1 Year

Could you write 300,000 words in a year?

That is about 800 or so words per day.

I might have to ramp up my writing!!

I also found his post motivating.

That is actually not that hard to do when you break it down on a daily basis. It does take a commitment to being consistent. Of course some niches could be harder to that in then others. I have written over 15,000 words a day a few times, but that is not a normal day for me any more.

I'd say I average around 3,000+ words a day because of all my projects But that's also updating clients, updating social sites, etc. Heck.. I'd probably even go past that. Nice share.

Same range here. I passed a million words for the year a few months ago in fact (although it wasn't all client/IM related).

I'm betting I have hit the same rate. Those are just basic estimates. Since I am on a majority of my day and even write while on my phone, it's likely my content is way further. Plus we shouldn't all worry about written words. I do a lot of videos as well (over 300 in the last month) so that's content as well.

Hey Michael, you have been a member on WF for about 2 years now. I've almost been a member for 3 years. You have 700+ more posts then me in that time, so you're definitely writing content. Maybe you should put that effort into content for a blog? Or maybe you already have one Or maybe join communities that are relative to the niches you are promoting, which you may have already as well.

Videos definitely count, and you can track the word count if you're writing your scripts beforehand . The good businesses have figured out that content makes the web go 'round. 300k words, written or spoken, should be easy to achieve.

            Agreed.

I'm a huge follower of SEOMoz and one thing that I did prior to joining up with them on my niche videos was to include a transcript, when I realized they were doing the same thing, I was so excited to know I was doing the right thing.

i've written 175,000 words these last 2 months to get over how painful i find writing.
I'm not there yet but i am much better than i used to be. It took me a week initially to write a 10 page product i was happy with... i'm a perfectionist.

Now i can do 150 pages np in the same amount of time.

The trick #1 to speeding up writing is to invest time in planning out your outline.
Make sure it flows before you start writing.
The trick #2 no editing until you have finished the first draft...
The trick #3 write in 5 minute bursts. 5 minutes on 5 minutes off.
Knowing you have to write for 1 hr is intimidating... 5 mins not so much

O and stick to the 5 minute rule. Stop at 5 minutes.
This teaches you to complete chunks of copy within the 5 minutes.

And because they are chunks you can move em around easy enough & reuse...

It's not that difficult if you enjoy writing. My Masters dissertation was 63,000 words banged out in about 5 days. Lots of research, experiments, data-gathering, analysis and pre-write-up-planning before that, though.

I can write 1000+ word decent articles on most subjects in about an hour with 30 - 45 minutes research time for key points beforehand.

Definitely doable - but definitely not enjoyable for all. You'd also have to factor in whether your needs might be served better elsewhere. Outsource the writing, if you can, unless it is your sole (soul) reason for living.

Of course it's possible, only question is whether a particular person has the motivation to do so.

I'm pretty sure many on this forum would rack up 300,000 words a year JUST on the forum.

The best part about that article was about the pains we could suffer - either the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. I do a lot of focus on discipline now (something I never even thought about when I was younger) and see that it has helped me make a tremendous difference.

It's only through this discipline that I'm able to bang out 5,000 words a day. But I see the potential for so much more - time to get more disciplined and scheduling my writing.

    Thanks for pointing this out!

Not sure do I average 800 words a day, if I would count everything from chatting to writing blog posts then maybe, but if I would count only the longer writings that matter then probably not.
I try to write at least one blog post a day which usually ends up being around 500 words, but they don't come out that easy for me, it takes me a lot of time to think of an idea to write about and to actually write it.
Probably the fact that I'm not a native English speaker isn't helping me out lol.
But I like writing and once I get started it gets done
I have improved a lot from the time when I started my blog, I know write longer, better, more interesting articles and I write them faster. Hope to improve my writing skills even more.
Thinking of investing into a tablet. So, I could write on the go, it would help me reach the 800 words a day mark

When you know your subject matter and have experience, it's makes the writing process a lot easier. I've been able to type over 80 wpm for 28 years which helps. I haven't done a typing test in several years but last I did, it was 110 wpm.

I create an outline for what I have to write - usually what major points to address. Then just write in 45-50 minute chunks followed by a 10-20 minute break. It takes maybe 6 hrs to write this much.

Could I always do this? Definitely not.

Also in my case, my writing output is probably different than for many people here. Probably 4/5ths of it is for training material to be delivered through videos, webinars, etc. So it's as easy as telling stories for me

I spent 2 hours typing up an article in relation to marketing yesterday, ending up being 2,000 words.

I actually can type almost 115 words a minute now, but I like to do deep analysis and get lots of references.

2,000 words / 120 minutes is roughly 16 words per minute

I can produce 1,000,000 words in a year or even more if you want. I simply outsource them.

If i were to write 300,000 words by myself, I able to do it too.. I just have to write 700 - 1000 words article/blog post every day. It requries commitment nonetheless. Give me a reason big enough to write and I'll write. If not, I'll just outsource, hehe.

That still only equals out to 2739 words a day.

Which I expect anyone who is dedicated to this and putting in effort is achieving.

If typing is not your thing you can use Dragon Software and easily do 10,000 words a day. That would be 3,650,000 a year. Its doable and Mike... whatever you believe to be possible is what your mind decides is possible. 800 words per day isn't that much at all.
If you count, for example, sms you type, some regular mails that you send out on a daily basis, and if you're running a blog - it can add up very fast to more than 800.
