Doing what you love...

Hey!

Question is, how many of you are doing what you love? For those who aren't ...why not?

I'm trying to be doing what I love. Right now, though, it does not pay enough. One day I hope to develop what I love into paying me well.

There is a different between doing what you love and doing what will make you successful. I always wanted to be a Pilot, i could dream flying in the air with different airplanes but i ended doing what know better. Look for something that will make you successful and you will begin to love it though not you favorite.

      Hey, I completely disagree.

Imagine you could do exactly what you wanted and you knew no failure or excuses.

hmmmm... I always wanted to be a pilot.
Know what I did? I saved my money and went to the local small airport and took a lesson.
It cost me $150. Something I couldn't afford. But I had been working hard and felt I deserved to experience flying at least once in my lifetime.

That flying lesson was one of the best things that I have ever done. Not only did I experience a freedom I had never known before, but I ended up getting much more from my personal gift.

I was so exhilerated from the flying lesson earlier that day that I decided I was going to do whatever it took to make my dream of flying come true.

I got my idea book out and started figuring out how I could meet my goal and still pay my rent. Well, it happened that I noticed that when I paid for my flying lesson, that the company still used paper to deal with all of their paperwork. AHA!

I worked a week on designing them the best intranet possible, added a power point presentation with it and went to talk to someone in charge.

This story could go on for quite some time, so long story short, I bartered my way into getting my day and night license for flying a piper warrior. Not to mention all of the great friendships I developed by this small adventure.

And to me, that was a great success! One that changed my life, forever.

In my opinion, I guess it matters on how bad you want something and what you are willing to do to get it. No matter the obstacles in the way.

The best of success to you! (definition of "success" depends on you)

I agree 100% but then again I cast a glance on my life and the people I know and get the picture clear. There are a great many of us who are compelled to do the things they don't enjoy doing. If we all were to do what we truly enjoyed, the world will not be as beautiful and disciplined a place....Agree or disagree?

Disagree, because the truth is, most people don't believe they can have, do or be anything they want...so, ...they still do what they do. Regardless!

      I strongly disagree.

What's wrong with people enjoying their life?

Not to say everyone should be able to do what they want to do, because there are some people out there that are insane and see killing or torturing as something they love.

But as per enjoying our lives, I think that if the world were full of people who enjoyed what they did, we'd live in a world of prosperity.

Guess what, there are people out there that love to drive trucks. There are people who love to cook food. There are people who love to build houses. There are people who wish they could fly planes. There are people who dream of helping others.

When it comes down to it, there are still going to be people out there that want to do the things you don't

        Hear hear, Justin!

I would just add that, having worked in the field of mental health for over 30 years - including encounters with a handful of murderers - I don't think those people actually do love what they do. They are so badly damaged they can't love anything - even themselves, but I don't think Nature or God - or whatever you believe in - "made" them that way.

It's a controversial one, but partly it's instinct that tells me that's right and partly it's evolutionarily sensible - we need our community to survive as a species. Our natural instinct would be - (and usually is) - to look after one another, not destroy them.

        Meaty thread, eh?

I've been doing what I love since I began working online and it's what has helped me achieve the success that I have today.

It's scary thinking that there are people out there that have worked for 20+ years at the same job that they hate.

Makes me wish I could take their place sometimes, just because I've already experienced doing what I love over these last few years.

But then again, I can always go further and help more people achieve their dreams That seems like a better goal.

Do what you love and do it well.

It's a good question. But there are a lots of thing that you really can't control. Like your country, family, money... I mean the situation right now. But you can only try to do what you love. It is not easy. Try to save more money, build a good relationship with the people who love to do the something, that will be so much easier.

        "Dumb."

Lives in their own reality. Doesn't pay attention to what the outside world tells them they can and can't do. They are completely oblivious and they just keep doing things until they have success.

I have a friend I went to music school with. While I ended up being "aware" of the world around me, he just kept at it. He started out as a terrible musician and now he makes a living playing. I sell phones.

I really wish I could have been more dumb. In fact I remind myself to be more "dumb" when I think about what my "competition" might be doing or be capable of doing.

          Ah, see that's interesting.

So you are in a sense referring to the term "dumb" as both a negative and positive word.

          You know what...

That reminds me of something I used to share quite a bit.

Place 2 people in the same sales/marketing position.

You could have a very intelligent girl, with a college education, great standards, and excellent English.

While on the other hand you could have a simple guy, that's high school dropout, who doesn't give a crap, and uses poor English.

(Note, the girl in this position has a much higher chance of success, so we think)

But by putting them in the same position, let's just say the girl is trying to sell a washing machine. Which she then succeeds.

The guy however, is trying to sell the same washing machine, succeeds, but he doesn't stop their, he ends up selling the dryer, bulk detergent, bulk dryer sheets, and even gets them in an insurance/warranty plan.

Anyways, just an interesting thought I've seen people in those same positions, once you dumb things down and stop putting so much effort into all the complicated stuff that doesn't matter, you could potentially do a lot better.

          Yup- you're exactly right, Kevin.

My dad has tried to build 3 businesses over the years... and every one of them succeeded. These were brick and mortar businesses, where something like 99% of businesses fail in the first 5 years.

One time my brother and I asked him about it, and he said

"I was just too dumb to think that I could fail."

Sometimes to be successful we must learn to discipline ourselves. I am a programmer and I love to write programs. I can write programs forever. In truth I make very good living writing programs for others people. However when it comes to sell my own software I have stumbled. I did not know how to words or to describe it. So I have to learn to discipline and sit down to write out in long hand sales copy that I admire -- I have to do things I don't want to do ... and that is to sell and to stand behind my products. I guess there are degrees of likes and dislikes but I must say I love money above all else and that love is keeping me in here so I guess I am doing things that I love even though in the short term writing sales copy that sells doesn't seem a very enticing activity. All disciplines will pay off in one way or another.

    Life is a brief adventure.

Imagine being at the end end of your time here on planet Earth... looking back, what do you wish you had done more of?

it's a question I like to regularly ask myself.

I do what I love everyday and I'm still working towards other achievement that I'm going to love... while enjoying the journey.

And I like to encourage others to do that...

    Joe ... I'm with you.

We are indeed only limited by our beliefs. The argument that we are "compelled" to do things we don't love is, on the surface, compelling in its own right and the problem with trying to knock it down with "reason" is that you can't. The argument is impervious to reason. And so "reasonable" people will, can and do rationalise why they aren't doing what they love.

    But look at the question.

Love is not something you do by "reason"! When you fall in love, nobody says to you, "Why do you love that person? Give me your reasons," do they?

There is another flaw - which is not just linguistics - in the premise, "Do what you love..." I've tried and beaten my head against metaphorical brick walls more times than I care to count trying to "do" that.

I finally figured it out. You have to be what you love. Be joyful, be passionate, be upbeat, be optimistic, be creative, be resourceful, be imaginative ... and not only will you automatically "do" whatever it is you love to do, but people will fall over themselves to let you. In fact, they'll beg you, (and often pay you a lot), to keep doing it ... because you make them feel so good whenever they're around YOU doing it!

Think of any field of endeavour. (Yes I'm in the UK too - greetings from Exeter, Joe - and Paul Ryder too). Cooking, gardening, even doing housework - there are people who've become famous doing what others consider ordinary or even drudgery - because they do it with love and they make others feel good when they do whatever their thing is.

The doing follows the being. I'm convinced that's the first principle.

Great - and very important - question Joe. Thanks for asking.

    Trevor.

The problem with most people working from home is that they are not promoting a niche that they are passionate to promote. Most of them are in it for the money. You gotta promote something that drives you to shout out to as many people as possible on how great your product is and that is how find that love to promote.
