Can you wake up at 3am to achieve your dreams?

The more productivity/self help type of videos I watch, the crazier it gets.

I mean, for most people waking up at 5am is CRAZY early.

To me, 4am is stretching it (although I've done it the last 2 days in a row).

...but I just watched a video from Eric Thomas, and he said that he wakes up at 3AM

Just curious- is anyone else a 3AM'er?

I mean- I think lots of marketers go to bed later than that :p

But maybe here's what I'm getting at-

Would you be willing to wake up at 3am for 1 year to help your success reach the next level?

Justin, would you say there is a difference between someone who is willing to get up at 3am to achieve their aims and someone who's willing to stay up until 3am to achieve their aims? I'm the later. Since I stopped having to go to work to make money in 2004 I've preferred to wake when I'm rested (with a big 'ol stretch) and sleep when I'm tired (with a big 'ol yawn). This brings me to a natural cycle of late to rise, late to sleep. Works for me.

      That's exactly where I'm at.

It doesn't matter when you wake up, it matters how much stuff you get done. And my schedule is pretty f**ed up for a while because i stay till 5 Am-6 Am even 3-4 PM but i'm so pumped up that i can't sleep unless i'm dead-tired.

Well I do wake up around that time lately trying to finish some design work. When I'm running out of time, I do sleep very late. And yes I do get some of those sleep for an hour then wake up again to work... doing it for 72 hours straight.

Whatever means necessary to get the work done (or to get my goals done)... I guess we just really have to do it.

Haha you knew you would get a response from me on this one.

YES... I have been doing 3:30am this week and I've done 3am in the past. But like Bill and muddywaters says, not everyone goes to bed by that time.

I guess the real point is, who is willing to do WHATEVER it takes to achieve their goals... and more importantly reach their true potential as entrepreneurs and people.

Personally I can't sleep 8 hours a night and achieve what I want to achieve... so I sleep about 5 and this is plenty of sleep for me.

I love how much E.T. is blowing up right now. He's had a huge impact on my life

I love that response, fellow Justin!

Because everyone has different goals, productivity levels, situations, etc. So while one person may be able to get a full 8 hours of sleep every night AND reach their goals, others may only be able to get 4-5 hours a night (or less).

Long-term, I think it's important to get more sleep. But when you're building a business NOW that will take care of you in the future- you gotta make some sacrifices.

oh no... I'm not a person of 3am because I sleep around that time @@
I prefer to work at night. and once I sit down and start working, it will be whole night long.

what's really troublesome is that I need to get up early to work again the next day and then take nap in the evening.
Bad cycle, I know. But i really enjoy working at night more during day time.

anyone else enjoy working at night with some special music like I do?

Wow, I feel a bit sheepish with my 5-6am wake up. If it was required to success, yes, of course I could do it. But that basically means altering my entire schedule so that I'm sleeping by around 8 or 9pm? I'm a college student at the moment so even with my "late" wake up in the 5 to 6 range I'm in a very tiny minority that actually wakes up early.

But I will tell you, there are far more students going to bed by 3 or even 4 am than those getting up at that time. Not sure what that says about the will or success of the students at my school, just saying.

I am on a disability pension because of numerous health issues. One is diabetes. Another is insomnia and another is chronic, severe pain.

This means I work from home, get tired easily and so I sleep whenever I want to.
It also means I can be online working at 3am and asleep at noon. Apart from when I have specific medical appointments, time isn't the same for me as it is for "normal" people with regular hours.

The bottom line is that you should use your time as productively as possible. If you are alert at 3am, you can work but if you are sleepy, you won't get much done. Trust me on that. I have been writing an article and I nod off. I wake up a bit later and I see I have written 500 pages coz I fell asleep on the enter button, or I have written sentences that make no sense.

Those early waking stuff is really good, when you need to find couple more hours for doing stuff, but the truth is, it's not healthy if you don't have 6-9 hours of sleep.

If you really do early waking ups, and have no enough sleep, you'll start experiencing really bad stuff in time. Like - you'll have troubles doing multitasking, you'll fall to micro sleeps ( 5-15 seconds ) n other stuff. Well some people can stay awake and in good condition even after couple hours of sleep, but who knows how long they can do that? In my opinion we all who change our body clock we are 1 meter closer to sleep disorder or illness.

We are humans. We should treat our body as a GOLD and give what deserves - 6-9 hours of sleep and 16 hours of active work... Well I'm student right now, I can't do what I want, but yeah, if you are adult, are boss for yourself, treat your body as every people should. It's gonna reward you later.

    @laurencewins

    really sorry on your condition.

    ---------------

It's just my opinion, don't start posting messages about how this guy did that and that.

We all can achieve success by working 8 hours per day or less. What we need is learning and patient... There is no need wake up 5 hours earlier.

I agree, but here are my thoughts on it

      1) Getting less sleep now, if its productive, can mean that later in life I can get MORE sleep. If I set myself up to be comfortable financially, and do whatever the heck I want by the time I'm 40.

      2) Waking up early doesn't necessarily mean less sleep. If I go to bed at 9, fall asleep at 930 and wake up at 330, that's 6 hours. Even though I've had a few late nights this week, I'm still trying to get at least 5-6 hours a night.

      3) I try to take at least 1-2 naps during the day. Just 20-30 minutes of napping and it refreshes me for another 4-5 hours.

      4) Weekends are when I sleep in- just like everyone else. Even though some people say that you can't "catch up" on sleep, I think that getting a few extra hours on the weekend does help.

But yeah you're right. You only get one body- if you abuse it too much, you lose it.

That's why the first thing I've been doing when I wake up is hop on the treadmill, turn up the incline, and get in a 30 minute walk AND eating healthier throughout the day.

@Same. I know. I am on a drug that has a methadone base because morphine wasn't strong enough. I also have a hospital-style electric bed as I can't lay flat as the nerve damage is the worst in my neck. BUT there are people in worse situations than me so I shouldn't complain ( well not too much )

I need to at least for 6 hours per night. A doctor even told me that I should. So, I would have to sleep from 9PM to 3PM... and then it might be doable...

I suppose I could go to bed at 11PM - more reasonable for me, and wake up at 6AM. That could be doable, I suppose, and I could still have about 7 hours of sweet sweet sleep.

3AM? Well, I became self employed not for the money as I was making cash just fine, but rather I ventured off the beaten path for the Freedom. And part of my freedom was not having to get up before the rooster crows.

Now if you have meetings with people in other countries and timezones, and 3:00AM will make a client happy, then yes, getting up at 3:00 AM is no problem. Even if I went to bed at 1:00AM.

    But I don't so I won't

    Hey Justin!

I love ET ha and his philosophies, I agree with many who have posted it truly is a preference. I personally feel that getting 4 to 5 hours of sleep and being able to get up early around 3 or 4 gives you a head start.

Like he said in some of his other videos (the TGIM ones) he feels great knowing he has accomplish more by 9 AM than most people accomplish by 5 PM.

I feel rising up early is a habit that will take time and even he said he started with 6 AM then 5:30 then 5 then 4:30 till he worked his way to 3 AM. I believe it is possible as long as your "WHY" is strong enough like his.

    (love this video)

I honestly don't see myself ever getting up at 3AM or staying up til 3AM to do this stuff. I just won't do it. The earliest I get up is 7:30 and the latest I go to bed is 12:30. Anything less than 7 hours and I can't function.

I understand what people mean about whatever it takes but to me if I can't get 7 hours of sleep, then I'm doing something wrong. Maybe I need to outsource more or something. But 7 is my number and I make sure that I get it.

It works better if you have a specific goal or project you need or want to achieve. For example, I've been working on a game that was way too big for one person to make; and one day (after seeing his videos) I woke up at 1AM! with the white fever to gut out all the stuff that is slowing the development and use the idea of "fail fast" and "get something out there" as the motivation.

Although I could only stay up for 2-3 hours, I felt very good when I rewoke at around 6AM.

So for the following two days I tried waking up at 3AM, but I didn't use an alarm; I wanted to be my own motivation (as I've constantly had issues with constant depression) to wake up and strike oil and found I woke up at 2.30AM, 3AM, 3.30AM and could do work until about 4AM when I'd get really tired again.

Although I haven't finished the project yet (other things got in the way) I used it as an experiment, I really wanted to know -- do I want it as bad as I want to breathe.

This is all without any formal exercise too. So it is possible to wake 3-3.30AM, but it can be very hard.

I'm slowly building a mini-plan ritual for myself that I want to implement as soon as I've refined it and can combine it with a bigger plan for $10k a month.

    a) have a specific project you really, absolutely want to achieve and will feel forfilled for having achieved it.
    b) be willing to wake up or stay up late to get work done
    c) take regular exercise to increase your stamina and general health and go to the gym early for 1-2 hours or go for a run or cycle in the morning.
    d) eating fresh fruit/orange juice.
    e) taking stock of your long-term and short-term goals; remind yourself of who you are, why you are here and what you are wanting to do.

I see a strong similarity between a morning ritual and what Boxers or MMA stars do in the morning. They go on a run for 5-10 miles, do X, Y, Z; they have a specific program and stick to it.

Incidentally, I'm going to an event in the next few days where some millionaires are to be, they've been on TV so I'm going to ask them the "starting blocks" questions and most importantly what their morning ritual is.

Anyway, it is possible to wake at 3AM, but I do not see anything wrong with being a person who goes to sleep at 3AM rather than a person who wakes at 3AM; if you can achieve your goals and its not affecting your health I do not see any issues with it.

I wake up at 5:00am, take a nap around 11am for 45 minutes, and stay up until midnight. Been doing it for two years now, ever since my wife and I had a baby. It was the only time to get serious work done. I don't take coaching clients until afternoon/evening. So first three hours are yoga and meditation, journal writing, and taking care of most important task. Then the rest of morning is strategy/dreaming/planning sessions, and of course, playing with my daughter. I'm not the richest on here, but I might be one of the happiest.

    Great question, by the way!

You simply have to train your body to get up at 3:AM.

It takes a while but it works.

I now go to bed at 11pm, and wake up at 3am. I work basically all day with taking off a few hours here and there.

I can't remember the exact quote - but I remember hearing someone say "do the things that people won't do for two years, so that you can live like people can't for the rest of your life"

Pain is temporary. I may only get 4hrs of sleep but it won't be forever.

It really depends on your schedule. Married with kids and other jobs. You live alone it is very natural to stay up later when sleeping in. I would not force it. Depends what your working on and how focused you are. If I'm churning out articles I lose track of time. Can sleep for 8-12 hours after that.

I am ABSOLUTELY CONVINCED it has more to do with what you are waking up to do than actually getting out of bed. My fiancee lost over 170 pounds and now shares her weight loss story as a personal trainer. She teaches three times a week at 5:15 and gets up before 4am. I find this to be absolutely crazy, but her passion drives her and she never misses a class.

I, on the other hand, am a writer/internet marketer working towards my real passion and calling of becoming a Christian Pastor. Whenever I need to get up early (for me anything before 8am is early) and it involves church, volunteering or bible study, I am up and ready to go. However, getting up to work on my business is a little more of a struggle.

I think if you are truly passionate about what you do and it's your life's calling, getting up super early doesn't seem like super early anymore.

The same goes for getting up because others (kids, clients, family, etc) depend on you.

I have never been that early, mainly because the 6am (Just before sunrise) wake and the 9:30pm (After sunset) 'nod off' which currently suits me. If, as you question, more success was in the offing... I would awaken earlier and go to sleep 9'ish.

Personally I feel people who promote early rising just like to give their student a goal. Yeah you accomplished something but did you have a real reason to wake up early?

If you are waking up at 3 am to call prospects in Europe because you can close more deals there vs the US than go for it.

But the guy who sleeps 12 hours a night and wakes up at noon is just as likely to close sales and get the work done if both people are motivated. The difference is that the guy sleeping 12 hours and following his bodies sleeping schedule will be more rested and be on his A game.

So wake up at 3am and get a few hours of sleep. Or learn to follow your body and sleep and wake the way it wants you to. If you are working for yourself why force a schedule on yourself. That is what people (like myself) who have jobs have to do.
