Do You Have An Uncontrollable Newbie Buying Problem?

IM is littered with offers and programs and literally hundreds of ways to make...and lose money.

Therein lies the problem. Theres a lot to sink your teeth into - or get totally overwhelmed and confused by.

As an internet marketer and a successful offline professional, I have marvelled at what i think is not only a major problem, but a massive epidemic - uncontrolled spending and buying every new 'big thing' thats released.

Why I think this problem is somewhat accepted..or tolerated is the fact that its reflective and indicative of wider society and the need to spend money and buy things.

I'm talking about buying product after product and not using them. I'm talking about hundreds and thousands of dollars a lot of prospective Im'ers are spending to try and get in the game.

I've been caught well and truly in this, and in fact have spent thousands of dollars that I never needed to spend.
I bought those 'cheap' products only to be sold 1,2 sometimes 3 upsells and a downsell then a constant barrage of quick to follow recommendations via an email list that tried to maximize its grip on creating and maintaining 'the confusion' that is so often the case with newbies.

Its a tough gig for intermediate and even in some cases, seasoned IM'ers to avoid the trap of buying product and programs...

Its IMPOSSIBLE for newbies to avoid as they do not know ANYTHING about online marketing or working online.
They are lambs to the slaughter and unfortunately it is often considered (if not spoken) that this is the way you learn and cut your teeth before entering the online IM world.

I think thats a big pity and not enough has or is being done to ensure 'newbies' get a fair go...

Many might say that its their problem and that its all experience - does it have to be that way though?

For many it is and will be based on their lack of application and drive perhaps to get serious about working online. But many have been destroyed by info overload and predating marketers intent on milking them of their dollars before (if ever) they wake up.

How can a newbie (let alone many others) not get attracted to savvy sales pages and marketing and big promos pushing the next big or sure thing?

Its tough. This is why I have the following advice for those prepared to heed it.

If you are starting out, or even if you are struggling with some of these issues, just take a step back and look at your results to this point.

Sometimes you are so far into this that you cannot see the issue.

There is a big difference between becoming familiar with the necessary functions and learnings of IM (like website/auto responder/social media etc) and going on a non stop spending spree filling up your folders with software and info you'll probably never ever even look at.

Marketing and marketers are becoming more sophisticated. The online environment right now is ever changing. Information even 6 months ago that was valid is valid no more.

Are you buying too many products?
Do you apply the techniques you learn in your purchases?
Do you use the software and plugins?
Are you treading water in a state of confusion or anticipation waiting for the next sure thing to get you on easy street?
Do you get far too many recommendations from lists you have subscribed to?

That my friends is just the tip of the iceberg.

Start noticing your habits and ask yourself if you are making progress in your pursuit of the magic system...

This problem only happens to people who are desparate. People get excited when they buy a product, but that excitement dies down as soon as they figure out that it's not what they expect - quick fast cash method.

In a different aspect, with many skilled IM with great landing pages and squeeze pages, it's tough not to get suckered into buying it when you're feeling hopeless and desparate. The entire point of marketing is to sell, and I'm not one to judge, but IMHO, few have the integrity to really sell good products.

Another good example where this habit is often seen is in the weight loss world. How many people have you seen or heard about that have bought countless types of weight loss pills, courses, or even hiring different instructors only to no avail.

Just one advice, don't let what you've spent go to waste. If you think what you've just bought is a piece of crap, STOP and THINK about why you bought it. That way, you'll learn what IM is doing to your head. Be detail about the little things like huge headers and the words they play with to get you wanting. After a while, you'll know who is actually bullsh*tting and who's not.

Of course, there's always profiling, but I hope you get my point.

    PS: I'm was victim too : (

How about by exercising some self control?

Another post that just naturally assumes people are victims of flashy offers. I might agree that an inexperienced person could be fooled into buying ineffective information once or twice. But after that if an individual keeps doing it, then he or she is gullible and naive and should look for something else to do other than online marketing.

The truth is, a smart person, even one brand new to the Internet could find just about everything he or she needs to get started without spending a dime.

I'm not so sure about the "victims of flashy offers" part..

As we all have "buying responses" structured into our behavior..

Essentially they all come back to these two:
"This is going to make me safe" or
"This is going to help me get laid"

And when our "triggers" are pulled by skilled marketers, there isn't necessarily any choice involved in as much as an unconscious response, because we are being spoken to at a very deep level..

Throw on top of that the fact we live in an impatient world and for many people it's "I gotta have it now.."

And you've got yourself a pretty nice environment for "uncontrollable.."

If you actually believe this then I feel sorry for you. No one can pull your trigger unless you let them. You speak as though there is some kind of subliminal brain washing going on.

Look at it this way. There are no tricks, no secrets, no stupid autopilot Ninja dirty little secret strategies. There's business. Period. Provide a valuable product and get paid. That's the secret right there. Build a relationship with clients by offering great content and they'll be happy to buy from you.

All the rest of the hype most often refers to some tricky way to game the system and none of them work over the long haul if they work at all, which is doubtful. So get back to basics and realize that you're in business, plain and simple.

There. Now you've gotten the vaccination against being manipulated.

This comment makes me wonder if I inadvertently, somehow pulled your trigger travellinguy.. As your sorrow for me, as far as I understand is an emotional response to my communicated message..

I never said anything in my post about tricks, Etc..

I made reference to skilled marketers who understand human nature at levels that you quite possibly don't yet..

And when they combine this knowledge with the business principles that you advocate, then it is understandable that people can become irrational when it comes to spending..

What "hype" specifically are you referring to here?

I appreciate your concern about vaccinating me from manipulation, but at this point in time, I will keep an open mind and continue learning along the way..
All the very best to you..

I'm a junkie. I'll admit it. But what I noticed is that when I didn't have any money that I got smarter. Having money actually made me stupid. When I was broke I had to pick very carefully what I bought. I even went so far as to ask myself why I bought and then realized that I NEVER read all of the copy. All I read is what I get and how much it costs.

Now that I know that, I understand a little more. And now I can go out there and start putting some things together.

It is really difficult to say no to the next shiny object that is placed in front of you. We know in our heads that it takes work and a certain period of time for any new product to work but we are all too impatient to wait for the results.

We therefore see the next item as the better and quicker solution to reaching our goals - making more money.

It is very hard to break the habit. I know.

Hmmm... Perhaps then the issue is with the goals themself?
Maybe, just maybe, making money is just part of the plan in reaching the real goal.

Is it even possible to have too much knowledge, too many tools, read too many books, enjoy too many magazines or indulge in hobbies for too long? This whole "shiny object syndrome" is a myth. I resent (slightly) being dumped into a lower class just because I buy things that interest me. The fact that you can hunt for years to find the same information for "free" and should therefore never buy it is invalid. This only assumes that your time has no value. If someone can offer me a shortcut into a method that works for them then I'll buy it - especially at these crazy low prices.

Most of these WSOs (I presume that's what you're referring to) add to or confirm my knowledge and I can not see any possible way that's a waste. Now, if these WSOs were thousands of dollars then I'd say exercising caution and doing some more research might be prudent but for $7, a hot coffee and an hour relaxing for a good read I can enjoy a perfect hour of enlightenment, learn a shortcut or two or pick up some useful new insights.

I challenge your assumption that it's got anything to do with an uncontrollable "need" to spend money or buy things. That's just plain insulting. I'm learning and anyone who thinks learning new things (which always comes at a cost of either money or time) has some deep issues to deal with and so far as anyone looking for a "magic system" goes, that's pure bunkum (sorry to say). I've been here enjoying making money online since 2002. I've interviewed hundreds of people and read thousands (probably tens of thousands) of comments, reviews and discussion and not once have I ever heard of anyone who's looking for a magic anything. Every single person I've spoken to is willing to learn and put into practice anything they find useful or relevant. There is no magic shiny button syndrome - never was and the next time I hear someone tell us (the community) to "take action" I'm going to throw my freaking coffee cup against the wall.

Buying information is a GOOD thing regardless of headlines, promises or inferred speed. I'd rather that people spend $7 on a WSO than on drugs. I'd rather that people buy some information than waste hours, days, weeks, months or years trying to scavenge around for bits of free information. I used to sell my own stock market trading method (what worked for me) and I was regularly accused of selling information that could "readily be available for free" - so what? In just a few hours I could teach people exactly what was working for me daily, exactly how I went about it and showed real examples of exactly how I did it. That's worth money because it educated people, saved them time and inevitably saved them money (practicing with imperfect systems "trying to figure it all out for free".

I love buying information, reports, working systems and even theories and case studies. Why? Because I get enjoyment, I learn something and I add information to my hard drive for later use or reference in just the same way as people buy books, encyclopedias and go to community, local, state or national colleges to learn things. I see it makes inherent sense to buy something (inexpensive) that will teach me something that I would not have learned otherwise and that I didn't even know I needed to know. I could go on with dozens and possible hundreds of examples of how buying information has saved me time and money and given me knowledge I would not have otherwise had.

There's nothing wrong with buying knowledge people - keep doing it so long as you can afford it, enjoy it and are on your path to or fighting for freedom. Sure applied knowledge is power but knowledge alone (applied or not) is not useless and never will be.

    That's what I reckon anyway...

When I was new to Internet Marketing I had that problem too. As somebody here has mentioned, when we are new, we don't know anything and we believe everything. All we want to do id the "right thing" to be successful, so we justify all those purchases as being a "necessary evil" to help us learn the "right" way to market.

Once we get experience, we realize that there is no "right" way. There is only the "best" way for us, and that is an individual thing we can only learn from . . . more experience.

At a certain point, we must stop buying – and buying into – everything and start strategizing a workable action plan suitable to our own needs and interests.
