LEADERSHIP SECRETS OF SANTA CLAUSE

I managed a person for the first time when I was 23 years old. It was my second job out of college. I felt great about becoming a leader and "turning this person around." What I did not realize at that time is that I had great intentions but did not have the correct skills or paradigm to become a leader.

Below is a listing of major mistakes -

1. I was a taskmaster - I thought a good leader watches his or her people closely and keeps them on point. Now, I realize that a leader identifies people's strengths and interests and shines the spotlight on those things. Perfection is not required for success. However, connection and give and take is absolutely required.

2. I thought there was 1 correct way of doing things - They say the less experience that you have, the more you think you know what was right. I had very little business and life experience and was convinced that there was only one way to do things. Now, I realize that there are thousands of ways to do things. It is much more important that others feel satisfied with the work that is complete, then I feel satisfied with the work.

3. I thought I needed to teach - I had all of the answers and was happy to share them with anybody who was in ear shot. Now, I realize that the only way to be a good teacher is t be an amazing student. I will be a student for the rest of my life, constantly working on getting better and improving myself. When I apply what I learn, I will also develop the skills to be a great teacher. However, the best lessons that I can teach are those that come from leading by example. People are always watching, either consciously or subconsciously. It is my job to let them see things that move them forward.

Great Video. I agree. There was a time when we needed to hire several people. We rushed through the process and basically hired "Heart Beats." It was a huge mistake. It takes time to find the right people for your organization. And just like with your clients you also have to build relationships with your employees. Happy Employees will help you dig in when times are tough!

Well, I recognize real talents from the first time I meet any.
Its rather unfortunate many of those I work with are being imposed on me.
