Do you give up SLEEP?

Hey everyone,

So this is something that I have been thinking about and everyone seems to have their own opinion on this.

If you've listened to Eric Thomas (E.T) and his motivational videos, he talks about giving up sleep. You have to give up sleep if you want to be successful and he gave the example of 50 Cent of how he said, "Sleep is for the broke".

Will Smith also talks about his ridiculous sick work ethics and how he works all the time, giving up sleep a lot of the time.

Well having heard that, that's what I thought had to be done to be successful. So I slept on average 3 hours per day for a period of time and got sick after 2 months. I couldn't concentrate on much and I was dozing off at work, etc.

In my opinion, you NEED sleep. The idea is to not choose sleep over work when you have already had enough rest.

What do you guys think?

There are times when you do need to forego sleep to get things done. But, really, to be most productive, your body needs good, regular sleep.

Some people just can't go without sleep and be productive. And those people who think they are doing themselves a favor by going without sleep all the time to somehow prove their commitment (not saying I blame you JordYu, as many people do make not sleeping some kind of Holy Grail that true entrepreneurs should abide by) are doing themselves wrong.

And to those who use tons of caffeine all the time to try and make up for your lack of sleep, it's actually a double whammy. Not only will you be deficient and unproductive due to lack of sleep but caffeine has been shown to impair your ability to function optimally, as well.

Every study I read shows caffiene to increase your "ability to function optimally".

Maybe so, but only whilst it's active.

Caffiene doesn't give energy. It simply allows you to borrow it by stimulating the central nervous system.

A peak in energy levels is always followed by a trough. No different from a sugar crash.

I used to stay up pretty late when I was working full time, but now that do IM full time, I get normal sleep.

It sucked staying up till 2-3am trying to work on IM stuff, waking up at 6am, getting home at 6pm, and using my weekends for IM.

It depends on the person. I know people who cant take more than 4 - 5 hours a day because they feel groggy after. I have personally been up for days trying to plan business ventures out, but I often end up sleeping at my desk during those periods. So sleep is part of my strategy. You just have to figure out how best to work it for yourself.

I need a good 6.5 - 7 hours myself to get by a solid work and school day but thats just me.

I give my health and overall well-being a 100% priority, so I never give up sleep, not now, not ever! But if you equate sleep with slacking or procrastination, then I'd 100% say I'd give up the latter.

    Hey JordYu,

As with everything in life...it's a balance...

Of course, some people need sleep less than others but my view is is that you need to be fit and healthy to accept the challenges that life brings every day.

Plus...I am a grumpy arse when I am tired!! :roll eyes:

You could give up food... how about giving up water...

Giving up sleep makes as much sense. When you read what sleep does for your body and your brain you'd realize that giving up sleep is not healthy. When you sleep you integrated everything you learned and experienced through the day. Your body resets itself. Read the research. Don't listen to people who know nothing about the body.

Now, that said, there is always a balance. Some people need more than others. Listen to your body. If you find you're making more mistakes, not learning well, are crabby and snappy with other people, you need more sleep... or something else you're not doing.

Find what you're body needs and how you and your body functions best.

Quotes like that are often taken out of context. Yes, in order to have success you need to make sacrifices, but I'm willing to bet that in both of those instances they got enough sleep for them. There is also a difference between not sleeping till noon every day and getting 2 hours of sleep a night.

Sacrifices need to be made. Sacrificing your health shouldn't be one of them.

  • Well, I do give up sleep over work but it doesn't work for a long run. I do it mostly when working on important things and not always. 5 hours of sleep is enough for me to get going for the rest of the day.

I agree that sometimes during "crunch time" you have to lack a little sleep, however, my brain works best when its had some downtime to clear all the thoughts. I tend to practice 20-30 minutes of quiet time mid-day (I set 20 minutes of soothing music as a guide) and then I feel recharged.

We should have enough sleep to be free from stress, we must sleep at least 7-8 hours per day!!

If I sleep for less than 7 hours the very next day I feel sleepy and I cannot work!! So, I don't give up my sleep!!

I give up sleep to get what I need to do... done. I have slept an average of 4 hrs a day for 7 years. I started learning about IM so that I could get off the all night train and have daytime hours and sleep 6-7 hrs a night. But, so far it seems now I only get 3hrs of sleep, there is so much to do, learn and maintain my present business and household.

Once I get through the learning curve and take action, I am sure I will be able to increase sleep. The downside of so little sleep... is that often I feel brain dead when I read or study things or when I am working, so my productivity drops. Plus I have spent the last year sick with imbalanced hormones, stress and tension. That took months to slightly improve. Even all the organic foods and nutrient dense foods cannot make up for lack of sleep.

Kind of like going through the "no sleep" college years, all over again for me.

Giving up sleep? I think they were talking more about sleeping 5-6 hours a night rather than a nice 8-9 that most people sleep.

Also those people are sometimes on set or in the recording studio for 18 hours a day. But they do that for only a few months out of the year.

In our business, we don't want to give up sleep. We want the opposite.

To work a few hours a day (for me a week ) and the rest of your work, a trusting employee should be doing!

This should not mean you shouldn't work hard, you should! But you need to be working hard to come up with new ideas, and new ways of improvement. Sleeping actually helps compartmentalize everything that went on in your day, so you are able to focus better.

It's no wonder that you hear so many people say that they go to sleep with the inability to solve a problem, but when they wake up they have a solution almost right away when presented with the problem.

It all depends on how you do it. If you train your body to go on 4 hours or less of sleep per day it can be done but if you just pop something major like that on yourself out of the blue you are going to throw your system into shock and cause more damage than good.

You can't tell someone who has been sleeping only 3 hours a day for years that they are doing the wrong thing and vice versa.

I started a thread on this a couple months ago - you can check it out here: do you ever sleep

But to the OP - even Eric Thomas get's sufficient rest, but he does forego sleep when necessary.

I forgot what video it was but he said on average he tries to go to sleep by 9pm and up by 3am. So that's at least 6 hours of rest on average

    Oh you're so right!

I never give up sleep but I believe, getting more sleep than giving time for work is absolutely bring you down! The whole you - your personality, your relationships and your finances.

Spending enough time for sleep will improve your well being and your sense of productivity.

Depending what you're doing you will probably need to sacrifice sleep at some point to achieve success. If you NEED to sleep 8 hours a night I can assure you that your body will function on only 5 or 6. I sleep about 6 hours a night (sometimes less) and I feel great when I wake up in the morning.

It's all about understanding your body and going through enough sleep cycles to wake up productive.

Should know the body was designed to run on 8 hours of sleep. The more we deprive the body of it, the more it will ask for it...

Eventually your Body will shut down and force you to sleep.

I only pull late nights like that if I have an extreme deadline but I've found that if you force yourself to stay up when you're dead tired, it only hurts your productivity.

I usually wake up the next day t find that I made tons of mistakes. Now I just go t sleep. Lol. Save for the next day
