Alter Your Life in 30 Days

This post is inspired by Matt Cutts' Ted Talk titled "Try something new for 30 days."

I am typing this post at 9:19pm at night. I got up this morning and commuted an hour and half to work and an hour and half home. I usually like writing early in the morning but that was not in the cards for today.

Now, I normally do not face such a long commute but today was an out of the ordinary day.

I am more interested in being able to invoke lasting change at will. It would be fun to spend a little time each month figuring what is going to be better about me the next month.

Now, this in no way, implies that I am unhappy with who I am but I am definitely not a person who considers himself satisfied.

Most of the time I resist that change is simple, even though I know that is the case. I have been guilty of thinking that I need to know something or have some special skill to get change and have not put in the time or effort to acquire that skill.

In this talk, Cutts lays out a simple plan to make small changes every day for 30 days. 30 days is about the time it takes to build a new habit.

Cutts recommends starting with something simple and then expanding into more complicated territories after one becomes reliable to do complete the gas for 30 days.

Now, the questions, is what habit or skill would you like to invent or create for yourself in the next 30 days.

Make it exciting and dedicate a little time each day to fulfilling on that skill.
Enjoy and please feel free to share what you came up with.

Great idea Justin, I'm just about finished reading the book Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz and in it it says it takes exactly 21 days to learn a new habit or to get really familiar with something.

If you get a chance to read it I highly recommend it. Seems you have a lot of spare time to and from work, there's lots of potential productive time you have there like listening to audio books, what do you usually do during that time?

One thing I started doing recently everyday is watching "subliminal" videos on YouTube. Can't say if it's making big shifts in my reality or anything but I do enjoy the habit and zoning in to the video that puts me in a relaxed state of mind.

I am a huge fan of Psycho-Cybernetics. I have read the Dan Kennedy version many time and have reaped tremendous rewards. I practice the Movie of the Mind but have gotten more success from listening to audios and doing more "guided meditation". It helps me stay more focused.

      Thanks for sharing.

Whoa whoa whoa... I've had Psycho-Cybernetics on my list of books to buy for awhile now. There's a Dan Kennedy(presumably copy/sales based) version available too??? I could google the name, but comparing the 2, would you recommend one over the other? Thanks!

Absolutely, I love creating mind movies through my imagination.

This is the first I've heard of the Dan Kennedy version as well.. the original is a classic but I'll have to read the second one as well.

This sounds really interesting! I would love to learn about Psycho-Cybernetics (especially if it's written by Dan Kennedy) and I have also been trying to learn how to meditate effectively for some time now!

the number one thing people should absolutely try in their efforts to build quality traffic and inbound links on the World Wide Web would be article marketing. the reason why College of Content mentions this is simply because if people get in the healthy mindset of writing and submitting at least to uniquely written articles from scratch to any article directory 25 days idle 30 days in a month, they would get into the positive mindset of naturally building back links. They say it only takes three weeks in order for a habit formed in the mind. if a person were to develop a positive mindset of writing and submitting to uniquely written articles from scratch to any article directory of their choice 25/30 days in the month, they can potentially look forward to better search engine rankings, increased inbound links, as well as targeted and improved traffic from search engines and social networks. The healthy mindset here also would be not to use an article spinning software; yet, creatively come up with something unique off the top of their head and educational in providing useful information to the online masses. What do you think about that, in reference to positively having your life altered in 30 days? :-)

Personally, I have only read the Dan Kennedy version. From my understanding, the content is very similar but the Kennedy version has more applicable modern references. I can suggest that version without any reservations. The bottom line is that there a lot of assignments in the book and those who do the assignments will have the most amount of success. I hope this helps.

As a side thought, maybe we should start a Warrior Forum Book Club. We could read a book and then get together on Skype to talk about the book and, maybe even turn our experience into a product or a WSO. Dario? Dan? Mike? Any interest in trying it out. Just throwing a thought out there. We can do one book and one session and see how it goes. Again, just thinking out loud.

The 30 day concept is definitely important. A lot of what's going on in our heads is about our beliefs. We know this. What I want to highlight is that those beliefs are NOT reality!

For many years I was a healthy guy. I trained a martial art 4 or 5 nights a week, my cardio was awesome, I went on hikes up mountains with my friends.

Then I decided to get involved with local politics.

No more excercise. No time. 5 years.

Then I moved to the US.

No more friends (lol)...at least for awhile until I met new ones. 3 years now.

Then I started my IM career.

No time left at all to do anything.

So here I am overweight and annoyed about it. But I "don't have time" to exercise (there's the false belief).

The real value equation is this:

Time spent working on IM > time spent exercising.

This is the knot that needs to be undone.

So a few weeks ago I remembered the 30-day idea. My wife and I started taking walks. There are some parks around here, so there's always a place to go and it doesn't have to get boring.

I didn't feel like it, though. I had to force myself to carve out the time.

And you know what? The time to go to the park, do the walk and come home is like 45 minutes. I've noticed the time spent with my wife is better quality time than late night TV-watching (what a surprise).

So now, the habit has started. On the days when it's rained a lot, I have been annoyed that I couldn't walk. The idea is starting to take hold. I now "believe" a walk should be part of my day--something I knew I "didn't have time for" just a few weeks ago.

Sounds simple, doesn't it? But it illuminates what's going on in our heads...and that what we think is true--isn't.

I wonder how many other things in our lives are working this way? (hint hint).

I love TED talks. I remember when my Grade 9 English teacher first introduced me to them. I've watched a ton of them. Great, great stuff. Thanks for sharing this.

I really like this concept and I'm going to implement it. Probably something health-wise. I want to get in shape. This is a good mindset to have to get through it too. I'll just push myself to do something physical every day for 30 days. I know it'll get easier every day, and who knows, by the time the 30 days have expired I might actually begin to enjoy exercising.

    Thanks again.
