How to Develop the Entrepreneurial Spirit

"Every truth passes through three stages before it is recognized. In the first, it is ridiculed. In the second, it is opposed. In the third, it is regarded as self evident." - Arthur Schopenhauer

I'm sure most of us who are "afflicted" (blessed) with the entrepreneurial spirit go through something similar: we have an idea, and the mind goes, "That's COOL! But wait a second, that's also crazy out-there. Where did you come up with that scatterbrained idea?" But the idea takes hold. Why? Because it's intriguing. Interesting. Could be cool, right? So we start mulling it over, quickly sending the mind into "oh-hell-no" overdrive: "That's stupid! How can anyone make money doing that? That'll never work!" But stubbornness is an entrepreneurial trademark, isn't it? Silly mind, what do you know? We don't let the idea wither away. We think on it. The more we think about the end result and the myriad of ways it could possibly come together, the more the mind relaxes into the possibility. Until one day, "Ya know, that really IS cool idea! Let's do this!" is all you hear in your head, and you take action, persevere and make it happen.

So my question is this: what is the magic ingredient that separates the entrepreneur from the regular Joe or Mary? Why are some of us fearless in the creation of new truths (I define 'truth' as a highly individual "this is the way it is - this is real") while others stick to the truths they know and never explore other truths? What I mean by this is, "I can do this and it will be fun" is a personal truth that surrounds a goal. If we don't believe in that truth, we won't act on it.

So what is the magic formula that makes some of us come alive in the face of the unknown while others wait to see whether we get eaten alive or not before they join in? What gives the entrepreneurial person the chutzpah to override the mind and coax it into agreement?

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I'd say that it is the irresistible drive to be different from the norm that creates today's successful entrepreneur.

Successful entrepreneurs all around the world respect the rule of innovation - "if it isn't broken, BREAK IT!"

Apple had that as a foundation. Google obeyed that rule too. What about Microsoft? And Dell?

If you observe closely, the IT world is strictly based on the Innovation Rule and that is because this is the information age. All information is basically the same. Only INNOVATION makes the same truths sound different and new.

All in all, you just gotta WANT to be different. It's the drive to be different that makes today's entrepreneur successful.

Thanks for that observation! I completely agree, being an entrepreneur means being a square peg who refuses to fit into society's round holes. I love being different :-)

Being an entrepreneur since 6 years my answer is:
    DOING. Period.

Considering, thinking, researching, re-thinking, researching again and forgetting because life "comes in the way" is the average Joe's attitude.
An entrepreneur thinks: that could work, gets excited and does. After launching whatever he might see all the mistakes he made first and adjusts them sooner or later.... but after all the only point is taking action.

    Always smile.
You are nothing until you show some result.
Always work until you get a result.
Hungry for success and never let opportunity slip away.

To answer your question, ¨So my question is this: what is the magic ingredient that separates the entrepreneur from the regular Joe or Mary?¨ I would give the following response. The entrepreneur makes a decision to become his or her own boss and to earn money in ways that are creative and/or innovative.

The creative spark has to be there to come up with the idea in the first place; that's where a lot of us fall down. But then you have to be confident that you can do whatever you set your mind to doing, so there's no second-guessing.

First you want to find ways to motivate yourself, some of the most important things in entrepreneurship is drive, persistance and taking action.

A good idea is worth nothing if you do not take action. Don't be afraid to make mistakes(this is a big one), 99% you first business venture will not make you any money but as time goes on and you learn from your mistakes you will start getting success. Good Luck on your Journey.

    Very well said angeloflove.

To become a successful entrepreneur, you must know everything in your business.
Always motivate your self to work and explore. Massive action and being persistent will drive you to your success.

Note: Always welcome mistakes and learn from those mistakes.

  • I think it has mostly to do with how you're raised. Some people are raised with very strict or overbearing parents, while others have parents that allow them to experiment and express their creativity.

That's true to a point, but at some point a person has to take responsibility for their own life, to decide who they want to be. That means questioning what we believe, and why. I like the way Louis L'Amour put it:

“Up to a point a man's life is shaped by environment, heredity, and movements and changes in the world about him; then there comes a time when it lies within his grasp to shape the clay of his life into the sort of thing he wishes to be. Only the weak blame parents, their race, their times, lack of good fortune, or the quirks of fate. Everyone has it within his power to say , this I am today, that I shall be tomorrow. The wish, however, must be implemented by deeds.”

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

So far, here's a condensed version of what fellow Warriors feel makes entrepreneurs different:

    1. "All in all, you just gotta WANT to be different. It's the drive to be different that makes today's entrepreneur successful." That's huge.

    2. "Always motivate your self to work and explore." Commitment to learning and self-improvement.

    3. Taking action w/o knowing all the answers and the ability to use mistakes to find a better way instead of allowing them to stop you. Not being afraid of making mistakes.

    4. Not being afraid of the effort.

    5. "Always smile"; positive attitude.

    6. Persistence: "You are nothing until you show some result. Always work until you get a result." Average Joes/Marys can be persistent too, but not always for the right goals; if you know anyone who's been in a job they hate for years, they're persistent all right, but...
Entrepreneurs are persistent when it comes to their own goals, ideals, truths and values!

    7. Staying hungry. Ability to self-motivate.

    8. Taking action on every opportunity; "never let opportunity slip away"

    9. Making a "decision to become his or her own boss and to earn money in ways that are creative and/or innovative" - I would add to this, a desire for self-expression or a desire to share your talents in positive and beneficial ways.

    10. The creative spark has to be there, but w/o belief in yourself, you won't take action and you definitely won't persevere. "Be confident that you can do whatever you set your mind to doing, so there's no second-guessing."

    11. Ability to think from a different perspective and to challenge your own beliefs. (I read a great quote recently, "Don't believe everything you think.")

I hope we are all feeling "different" today :-)
