How do I change my distorted perception on business & money?

I often hear many people say you have to treat business like business, and not allow your emotions or beliefs to get in the way of making money.

My problem has to do with turning off those negative emotions and beliefs that are hindering me when it comes to business and making money. How does one go about doing that?

Everytime I think about money, I usually think about all of the people out there who work so damn hard, who give up a big portion of their life, and barely make ends meet, while some CEO or President of a company is sitting in a beach chair on some island laughing his way to the bank. I think about all these rich annoying celebrities who found a way to get people obsessed over them so they go out and buy everything related to them. I think about the FEDS, and how the american dollar has never had any real value, as it isn't backed by gold or food crops. I think about all of the same marketing techniques being used to sell products, fear-based advertising, mind-control advertising, and cookie cutter repeated hashed information I've read over & over again for years now.

It all just pisses me off, and enrages me when I think about how money creates a monster. How do I change my distorted perception?

You've already taken the first step - you realize that your perception IS distorted.

Now you need to understand that it truly does not matter what other people do or how they act when they succeed in business and are rich. No it does NOT.

For you, what matters is what you your-very-own-self do when and if you succeed in business and get rich. Period.

You can't change anyone else's approach. And you have no business trying or even judging them, IMO.

YOU are the only one you can change or judge. So ask yourself some very serious questions:
    * Why are you in business?
    * Who are you trying to do busines with?
    * Do you want to help or just get their mony any way you can?
    * When you do get rich, what do you intend to do with your money? How can you use it to make life better for others - or do you even care enough to want to?

This sort of thing is how you need to approach your career.

You are YOU. Be proud of that!

    Hope this helps,
    Dot

If you weren't interested in having more of it you wouldn't be asking
this question. Because your rage at the perceived criminality of
the wealthy is incrongruent with your actual desire for success,
fulfillment, and a life of less struggle you need to look at how you
got yourself into this bound state.

Your old beliefs about money probably run along the lines of "it's
noble to be poor", probably implanted by parents or other people
you looked up to who taught you that to make more than a working
man's wage was exploitive and taking from others.

Read this book Amazon.com: The Little Money Bible: Stuart Wilde,...Amazon.com: The Little Money Bible: Stuart Wilde,...
...and start unwinding the source of your incongruent beliefs before
they take you down a bitter road.

To change your perception about money you must develop a prosperity consciousness. You do this by controlling your programming on the books you read, the cd's you listen to and the people you associate with. For example, turn off the news and stop reading newspapers. Most of these outlets talk about lack. Try this. for 1 month don't look at tv, read a newspaper or listen to the radio. You will be amazed at the improvement of your attitude and clarity.

"You can only ever see what you are looking at - You can only move in the direction that you are facing"

    What does this mean?

It means that your focus determines your reality - Whatever you are looking at (focusing on) is the direction in which you are moving and whatever you are looking at - you are going to continue to see and experience more of.

At all times you are holding a stick in your hand and you can only hold the stick by one end or the other.

You either see yourself as being rich or you see yourself being poor.
You either see yourself as being strong or you see yourself as being weak.
You either see yourself as being healthy, or you see yourself being sick.
You either see yourself struggling, or you see your life being easy in a constant flow

There is no in-between - you hold the stick by one end or the other.

You do not solve a problem by focusing on the problem - you solve all problems by focusing on the solution - when you focus on the solution - you will begin to move in that direction and you will see it and experience it.

The problem is that the mind is a creature of habit and hates to be retrained so it follows the path of least resistance. It is easier for it to live in the past and keep repeating the same thoughts over and over again, than to focus on a new thought.

You have to retrain it to focus only upon those things you want to see.

When you stand back and watch people you will see exactly what they are focusing on - a majority of the population believe that in order to be deserving they have to work hard to create results and so they do - a minority of the population believe they deserve the best that life has to offer so they have a different focus all together and different results - they seem to glide through life.

hard work does not mean more money. i think that is a major flaw with your logic and i think that is a big reason why you are upset.

if you are creative enough to make lots of money with what you have got, then why not do it? dont be jealous of actors or CEO's. they obviously have something that you want. instead of thinking about how life isnt fair, think about how they do it. mimic it, and repeat it. then you make money with little work and you can be free to live your life. its all about creativity and learning from other people

    Hey daj,

You are aware of your distorted perception and this is a good start. The next thing is to challenge your own perception. For example; You mentioned that the CEO seems to do nothing yet earn much more money than those people who work their ass off. Have you thought about how hard they work in order to reach the place they are right now.

Replace all the negative thoughts with other thoughts one at a time and ultimately you will eliminate all negative thoughts.

Just being here and wanting to make a change is a huge step. Study self help and motivational materials from other great people you want to mirror. This is an ongoing process for most people that should be a daily thing. As you do this more, you're perception of money begins to change. A good starting point would be a book called "The science of Getting Rich" by Wallace D Wattles. You deserve to be rich! Once you come to the realization of this, you'll never look back.

Most of the other responses are good info. I'll just add that I work at the computer quite a bit a day and about 2 months ago I started using a desktop program called My Desktop Therapist. mydesktoptherapist.info

It uses affirmations, images, semi subliminal audio & text and EFT. They say it can use hypnosis also though I haven't tried it yet.

They have some different programs for it but my favorite so far is the one called Transformations. My attitude about work and business and other things started improving within a day or so.

But if you don't want to buy anything you can get the basic software for free and make your own program for it. They give some instructions on the best way to do it.

I never have as far as I'm aware. It might be a distorted observation from seeing George Bush playing golf on TV, while I was thinking about Iraq soldiers being killed in war. I'm sure many CEO's and President's work hard, but sometimes I think their off having fun somewhere, while others do all the work for them. Maybe I picked up the idea from a movie or something. I recently have stopped watching the news, and I started to read Steve Pavlina's blog which is helping me change my focus. Thanks everyone for your posts, they all have been helpful.

I don't think you can change your focus until you understand what that focus is now.

"Every time I think about money......."

That paragraph in your OP is about one thing - haves vs have-nots. It's about a belief that "life is not fair" (it isn't - accept that and move on) and there's some jealousy there, too.

I'd suggest when you have such thoughts to examine them to see if there is any truth in them or not.

It might be a distorted observation from seeing George Bush playing golf on TV, while I was thinking about Iraq soldiers being killed in war.
That's a good one to question. Are you saying it's wrong for a president to play golf while soldiers die in Iraq? Or that he shouldn't play golf while YOU are thinking about the war?

It is a distorted observation because the two things are not related. If the former president stopped playing golf - would soldiers stop dying? No - there is no cause and effect there. You are talking about appearance - and focusing on how others "appear" to you and your sense of what is proper to do.

Stop focusing on "money" - stop worrying about why some have money and some don't. The dollar may be worthless - but it pays my bills so where's the problem?

Start to focus on what you need to DO - the specific tasks YOU need to DO. When you start obsessing about what others do or earn - stop and ask yourself whether it affects you and your business....or not.

You are playing a "blame game" - where you can't do anything because others do more, or less, earn more, or less,....and it's not about them. It's about you.

I think these are some good tips. But I also think that the most effective thing to do is simply allow those thoughts to be. Let yourself get in touch with why you are angry, because you need to understanding what is pushing your buttons before you can figure how to relate to those things differently. Try journaling maybe, where you are free to talk about however you are feeling without censoring it.

And then take your time to continue your work. Naturally, you will start to see that you want to change your beliefs, without having to make the negative feelings "go away."

    Hi Daj,

If you want to break away from your own distorted perception on money, my suggestion to you is to read:

Secrets of The Millionaire Mind by T. Harv Eker

The book will help you in understanding your own way of thinking about money, disassociating your negative beliefs about money, and reconditioning your mind to respond supportively in terms of money and success.

    Cheers~

      Hi Daj,

Your getting a lot of good advice here.

A couple of comments and pointers...

You say your beliefs are distorted. This means they are wrong, by definition.

Understanding this is a good place to start.

Next. I don't recommend trying to find out why you think what you do. Just work on changing these beliefs.

I recommend you look into NLP and EFT. These are 2 quick methods to get past the old belief system and instill a new one.

One thing is certain. You will NEVER be successful online or offline with your current belief system.

      Good Luck.

Last time I checked, it was still a free country.

What I mean is that you are welcome to have your own views and feelings. Everyone makes their own way in this world. You make choices every day that get you to where you want to go (or not).

First you have to decide what it is that you want for yourself. Then you just go for it. If you want to make more money, then make it. I have to laugh when I hear people who make minimum wage complain they don't have any money, so then go and make more. You charge for your time what you are worth. If you are looking to make $100,000 a year, then don't take a job that pays $15 an hour. There is no logic there. Look around, do what successful people are doing, and duplicate it. Lots of people make good money every day. It isn't that hard.

On the other hand, if you are happy making less and living a certain lifestyle, then you are likely better off than the wealthy. Many of them are not happy where they are. So first decide what it is you want and then go out and get it.

Money is like a gun; used the right way it can be beneficial - used the wrong way it is disastrous.

If you think that your perception of money is stopping you from making what you want - start thinking about what more money will do for you. Will it increase your security? Will it help you further a dream? If you think about the basic things it will improve for you, it will stop your negative feelings towards it, and you will regard it as what it is; a trading tool rather than an end-target.

It's unfortunate but this is how a large majority of the population is currently feeling. The media is perpetuating these images and on a personal level I'm not sure there is any quick solution to the conflict between wanting to make money and anger at the perceived self-indulgent rich. It's been said that the way around a belief/attitude is not around it but through it. In other words pierce these thoughts to see what's really at their origen.

There are steps to take daj, many good ones offered here...thank you for posting your "experience."

For me personally that is the key, "experience," which becomes the foundation of our consciousness, and thereby the way we think, feel and take action in a new direction or "stay stuck."

Big words I know, but that is exactly my point. It's most important we don't get hung up on the words as they are just symbols of symbols (at least twice removed from the actual experience any word in any language is attempting to share).

I have 2 of 13 steps written and posted at my blog which shares my own journey of "experience." Step 3 likely released today or tomorrow, is the one that will target most specifically a step to really tackle your current circumstances daj.

See, now your post is contributing to what I may include in it! :-)

If step 1 and 2 which you will find at my blog speak to you as steps that may serve you well, get in touch with me with a comment, or directly here. Your input and feedback daj will be valued, and add to my sharing steps of "experience."

From the book I've also learned how not to worry anymore about money, control my impulse buying, and so much more.

I warn you, the book is not for everyone. It may challenge your very beliefs about business and money.

I've also had some very distorted thinking about money, success...do I deserve it? But there's all these people out there starving, not making anything.

In the last few years I've invested probably $1,500-1,700 in my marketing and business education. Everything from big fat reports (Jay Abraham's For Your Marketing Eyes Only...2,500 pages) to lots of pdfs, courses, seminar tapes. Mostly Jay's stuff, but also in finance. I've built up a fairly solid library.

I think the deeper you go in business/marketing, you realize there's these answers staring you in the face...answers worth thousands, tens of thousands or more. And no one is using them! Quite an irony. We're in this struggling economy, there are millions unemployed...and here I am, sitting on a bunch of answers I'll never use.

It's a strange dilemma the deeper you go.

      -You can't change other people.

-You don't know their circumstances. Sure, maybe they're working minimum wage now, but they got burned out on marketing tapes years ago and want something different. Not everyone working is money obsessed.

-You can't judge things in the moment. Circumstances change. The person working at the super market may have 2 or 3 jobs, making more than you're making dabling in IM.

-Celebrities. I think there are more factors involved in success....than in business or IM success. More luck based IMO. Really can't worry about it.

-Could also find a way to give back or contribute if you're really conflicted about money.

-Some money problems are just poor habits IMO. I've seen this with my own eyes. From poor credit habits/beliefs (i.e. taking out payday loans), to lack of planning, lack of common sense.

-The dollar decline, FED inflating the dollar away, is just internet sensationalism. Sure, the dollar has lost 98% of its worth since the FED was founded (or some figure in the 90 percent range). But our overall standard of living has gone up in that time by 5 or 7 times. The average person is living better than in 1913 or 1917. Better sanitation, better infrastucture, etc. When the average persons living standard is worst than when the FED was founded, then I'll start worrying.

What you are asking is not easy for those who have not been brought up in a "business" environment.

Working for others - a job- means a regular wage (or should do) and people get used to that. It is a different ball game to having no income, unless you actually generate it yourself, through your own business.

One could go on for hours on this topic and it took me many years to get out of the mindset of being an employee as opposed to a business person.

To help you focus I would suggest that in all that you do from now on, every action, you ask your self "am I thinking as a consumer" or "am I thinking as a provider" of goods and services. That should help you focus. When you start to think in the same vein as the latter (the provider), you are ready to launch your business venture.

      I hope that this helps.

      Regards,
      Jeff Henshaw.

One of the things I firmly believe and that has changed my perspective on money, is that the world would be much better off if we had a different class of 'rich' people.

There will always be people who have control over more resources than others. Those people then determine the fate of the rest.

We have so many terrible issues in the world that are caused because of the temperament of those who control the resources.

So, if you know that you would make better decisions with how you would control the use of resources than those who presently make the decisions, you really can take it upon yourself as your personal responsibility to assume as much control over resources as you can.

Then, you can see to it that the resources you control are put to good use, and not squandered.

I imagine all the good I could do with billions of dollars in my bank account. I would make a real dent in the world. I could truly do some good.

You clearly understand the nature of the present financial system, as you touched on it clearly in regards to the feds, the fact that currency represents nothing anymore and so on. This was all put into place because the people that control the wealth were able to use their wealth to make it all happen.

You also need to realise that it serves the agenda of the unscrupulous elite for you to feel that controlling money is evil. It keeps you on your knees to believe this, with no real power.

The truth is, nothing in this world happens without money. If you want to make real change, in your own life and in the lives of others, you have to fight fire with fire. As long as the good stay poor and the unscrupulous stay rich, we will always have the problems we have now.

What we really need, is more strong willed ethical people, who want to see the world become a better place, taking control of resources and getting some real influence.

The intention to gain control of money for noble ends is a noble goal. Every living creature on Earth has a god given right to an equal share of the wealth provided to us by our planet. Don't let any human brainwash you into giving up your birthright, so that they can take more than what is rightfully theirs.

I say, assume control of as much money as you possibly can, and then see that it is put to good use, in a way that will allow you to live a full life that contributes to making this world a better place.
