Why Some of Us Don't Have One True Calling (and Why We're Better Off that Way)

"What do you want to be when you grow up?" is, after all, a fairly innocuous question... Isn't it? Actually, it's not.
This particular question is loaded with all kinds of implications about what's "normal." It marks the beginning of a pattern that can cause a lot of pain and anxiety for many of us.
Sure, some people are happy choosing a career, committing to one path and following through. But many of us simply aren't wired this way. We have many interests and we're good at a lot of different things. And you know what? That's okay... It's normal too.
This brought a lot of clarity to me. For the longest time I couldn't figure out my one true calling. Then I figured out that I didn't have... just... one.

I follow paidtoexist too. Great blog. I've learned a lot from it. Plus it's a cool name that I think all of us can relate to.

I read about something similar in the book "Mastery" by Robert Greene. There have been a few cases in history where people have jumped from thing to thing to thing while they have been trying to find their true calling.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't have one true calling either. I love to do too many things. I think that's why I was so lost in college. They wanted me to be one thing, when I didn't want to be tied down to anything.

How do you know you don't have a true calling, Joe ... you haven't lived your entire life yet. Maybe it's just that yours comes later in life.

Someone always has to come along and throw a monkey wrench into the works. It just so happens that it was my turn today. ;-)

PS - It's been the same for me.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

I am also interested in many things. So much so, that I have 3 college degrees and am now on my second career. I could easily go back to school and do something else, but I like what I do now and have decided enough is enough. So here I am working at mastering internet marketing. I like to try to keep learning. I'm happier when my brain is engaged.

That is a great article. It is very true that most of us are good at many things and even being an entrepreneur requires numerous different skills.

I feel the tug of several very powerful passions and I try to balance and integrate them all. I honestly can't pick just one... which is great. I don't want to be one-dimensional!

Passion can make a man climb the ace of success. So it's very important to do those things for which you are really passionate.
