Goals are definately an interesting one!
I believe that you need to set goals to give yourself direction. The way so many goals are missed is that people forget to take the action to reach them.
If you are going to set goals, you need to put energy into making them happen too.

The subconsious mind cannot see the difference between reality and fiction. When you write something down the subconsious mind thinks that is really happening. There have been studies to prove this. It's like when you are watching a horror movie, it is not you that get scared it is the subconsious programming that is startled. Simply because it cannot differentiate between reality and images.

So if you write down goals, especially in the present-future tense like" Within NOW and the end of 2013 I have accomplished the following goals" the subconsious mind will work toward these goals.
Albert Einstein, Leonarda Da Vinci, Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Napoleon Hill all these big minds explain this in their books and stories.

I like goals- but I think that a lot of people mistake their goals for a wish list.

You can have the goal to make $10M this year... but if you don't have any kind of plan for it whatsoever- and you watch 5 hours of TV every day- it's just part of your wish list.

Goals have to light a fire under you. If they don't, they don't matter. If they don't matter, you won't get up off the couch!

Awesome feedback, thank you! Goals are very important. It's for me establishing structure in my life. Without a plan how are we suppose to know what we want and where we are going? The challenging part is reaching these goals. Follow successful people. Don't try to re-invent the wheel. If you still have trouble reaching your goals there is something inside of you that is preventing this from happening. Now the real challenge begins of identifying this and getting rid of it. That is my biggest goal. To become conscious!

    Everyone have a great day,

I believe, when we set goals and think more and more about a goal in a time. That goal will become special with your emotion. That will as your subconcisous then automatic control your action to achieve that goal.

The mistake most people make when
setting goals is not taking the actions to
meet the goal that's been set.

If you have a health goal and don't work
out then it's only a dream. I'm sure we
turn dreams in to goal and not the other
    way around.

Refer to Napoleon Hill book, Think and Grow Rich, chapter 2, page 36 ... six steps to riches. Here's a snapshot:

Step 1: Fix in your mind exactly what you want

Step 2: Determine exactly what your are willing to do to get it

Step 3: Establish a definite date to accomplish it

Step 4: Create a definite, step by step, plan to accomplish it

Step 5: Write down a written statement summarizing Step 1 thru 5

Step 6: Read your written statement out load twice daily while execute your plan.

Step 6 is necessary to firmly plant your goals and plan in your subconscious mind, which will help you whether the storms as you execute your plan.

Setting goals is the easiest thing but reaching the goal is not that simple. In fact the training to the mind to prepare for achieving the goal is the key thing for success.

To be honest, writing down specific goals had no noticeable effect on my performance. It's not like I would forget a task that I need to do. On the other hand, what really helped me a lot is writing down the overall direction in which I would like to go. For me, it's easy to get caught up in day-to-day activities like college, work etc. and forget the bigger picture. In such days I find it very convenient to look over my draft and rethink my strategy if necessary.

I'm afraid I have quite a different perspective on setting goals. I find that goals may restrict you from doing beyond what you think you're capable of, and forces you not to explore and experience other possible goals and routes, which prevents you from maximizing the meaning of your life.

Let's say for example, my goal is to be a politician, though I am also very interested in becoming a singer. Unfortunately, I spend all my time and resources educating and training myself in politic studies that I'll never be able to channel any resources to venture as a singer. And I'm very interested in singing as a professional. My goal was set too early, I never took the time to explore, and it's turns into a regret.

Of course, everything needs to be moderated otherwise you'll never be anywhere in life...though I see many over-restricting themselves with their goals. So, it really boils down to what kind of goal you are setting, when and how you're setting it.

I think it is very important to have goals. You must also have your goals written down so you can review them daily.
You must also differentiate goals from dreams. Dreams are what you want, like become CEO of a company. Goals are the action steps needed in order to achieve that dream, like a college degree for example.
When writing your goals, you must be clear about what specifically you want to accomplish. Then add timelines and action steps to each goal.

I would also read Brian Tracy's book "Goals!"

I hit goals with precision 95% of the time. Here are the steps IMO:

    1. Lay out goals and time frame
    2. Determine action plan
    3. Monitor progress
    4. Adjust action as needed
