You are invisible to me..

Hi there.

We've probably never met. And it's very likely we will never meet.

In that sense, we are actually both invisible to each other.

But don't allow these invisible walls get in the way of your success.

Many people don't know this, but when I first started... the biggest thing that helped me out was pretending that each and every person I met online was actually right in front of me.

It's helped me build countless relationships that have since led to clients, fans, business partners, and even best friends.

My point is this.

If you want to sell more, don't screw with people. Be real and direct with them, just like you would when speaking to a friend.

Don't cheat your way to the top. You're going to make mistakes, we all do, but don't aim for them.

Make yourself in(their face)visible

So true. And that's why so many partnerships and transactions online go sour...because people see that invisible wall so will compromise their own values and ethics because they feel they are doing business and making decisions against 1's and 0's and not actual humans.

Boom! A very good post Justin! It's got me thinking quite a bit, also made me realise a couple of my recent failures.

I chose entrepreneurship over further education despite being laughed at by my friends and family..

I recently hit the "RESTART" button on my life, read my personal blog to find out how I did it :)

      Great post Justin!

There are lots of blanks unfullfilled in supposed timeless literature on the topic of sellling.

This is an Internet Age jewel of info!

      Bring down the walls!

Exactly. I've had many go that way and it's hard to get people to take action if you aren't in their face to tell them to do it. Even if they know by simply spending a few minutes doing something will help the business overall, some just don't have the motivation or mindset to do it and need to change for themselves.

I think a great way to bring down the walls is to just pretend they are your imaginary friend and if you hurt them, they'll never be your friend again.

Absolutely!! One of the hardest parts about being an internet entrepreneur is that you generally start out with NO SUPPORT SYSTEM and NOBODY HOLDING YOU ACCOUNTABLE

This sounds insignificant but it's not. This is huge and it's why DISCIPLINE is the number one trait an entrepreneur can have as they embark on their journey

            Oooo boy.

Social media. If you know anything about me, I'm big into Facebook marketing and deal with crazy people on there every single day.

What's funny is that many of those people that rant and act like fools have their profiles set to public so you can find out where they live... one day things are going to come crashing down.

Oh and... I ban them from my pages the second it happens. I can't stand it.

That's the word. I was talking with Gary Joseph yesterday and he used that word with me.. and to be honest, I'd never actually used that word in my life.

I had heard it before, but never really associated it with anything. And I'm really glad you mentioned it.

Being held accountable for your decisions is a really important aspect of building a business (and for anyone doing business with someone) and I agree that it is #1 over anything else.

It's one reason I went out looking for a personal assistant recently, because I have so much going on and so much success in different areas, but it tends to get in the way of some of the things that I should be focusing on.

Kudos and thanks to you for saying that word... I've been trying to figure it out since last night lol.

This has always been a part of my philosophy too. Being online shouldn't mean that you have the option to remain completely detached from your clients. Being online should be the reason to bring out your personality every opportunity you get.

People always prefer to buy from people they feel connected to. Damn, I follow many people on youtube that I would gladly send my money to if they only asked (and I have..) Create good content and show your personality, and people will want to give you money

    Excellent advise..

We should not forget that even though we are doing deals online.. There's another person on the other side..

    Cheers,

Great post and great advice, I find that when I had the most success with my business clients is when I treated them like a friend and actually wanted to help their business grow and not just looking to take their money.

Absolutely Justin! Getting a personal assistant to do 80% of the stuff you are doing now will require even more discipline and accountability on your end BUT your results can absolutely skyrocket because you'll be growing your business at hyperspeed compared to before.

    Excited for you!

Ya know, I would like to talk to you about a personal assistant.

I've never actually had one, but I do think that it would help quite a bit with all of my ventures. Most people that work with me, do it for free, but if I could get a bit of the backend work done by someone else I know I could increase my profits.

      • Hi Justin,
your thread recounting how you used to imagine the person you were dealing with on the Internet was someone real standing in front of you struck a nerve in me.

I remember when I did cold calling real estate sales (way back in the day when reverse telephone books were used to discover cold prospects) that it was always best to be smiling while talking with that prospect. No matter what transpired over the telephone, I was smiling. It has a palpable positive effect on the listener. My calls always went easier than those around me and it wasn't just my imagination. Not saying cold calling isn't a tough row to hoe. It is.

And, I couldn't agree with you more about not "messing with people". Just to treat them fairly and on equal footing. After all we are all looking to be respected by the other. What a great way to be a strong participant in sales while at the same time helping the world to be just a little bit better place. Pax

what is it that most people sell their time ..rich people use their money to buy other people time..

the other thing is most people only think about you when they wonder what you might think of them or what you can do for them.

i have been online playing around here and there for 16 years ..there are certain people i resonate with...while most people there is no reason to deal with them.

interestingly enough it has only been in the last year or so where ways have opened up to appeal to this group..there has just been an internal block in my mind and self image that needed a lot of work ..

a lot of that has been put aside and i am removing the final block ..the main thing that ever stand in our way is the false image of who we think we are...

So true...this is why I love studying rich people. Find their similarities and trends and replicate them.

Of course you can't always DO exactly what they are doing if you're not in the same hypothetical place as them, but if you adopt their habits, you'll eventually be getting closer and closer to that place.

I totally agree. Especially because allot of people I meet online are customers that use my music in their own work. For me customers are actual collaborators and co-creators.

I treat everyone I meet online just like a fellow artist I might meet at a gig, conference or any offline function.

That’s one way of building relationship online and I would recommend your thoughts to my friends online! It’s really hard to give it your best shot and be real online. People have lots of fears and sometimes the reactions to that fear is destructive rather than constructive. It’s okay to trust people. Although it’s no guarantee everyone you will trust will cherish that, I’m sure you won’t end up with none.

Another great post by you. Thanks for this again. This is very true. There are a lot of us who tend to forget that although we are facing our computers, we are still dealing with real people. To be really successful here, you still need to remain a professional approach and treat it like you are communicating with them like they are in front of you.

This is one of the reasons I'm not a big fan of skype.

I openly display my skype handle in various places, not selling anything but just as way to get in touch with me!

Over the last few months I constantly get people adding me, now some of these are genuine people who want to chat, ask my advice or have a problem, but I would hazard a guess and say 70% of the people who add me on skype are trying to sell me something!

Some of them will have detailed conversations lasting sometimes an hour or so, then they will throw up their aff link, or a link to their sales page or (this is my pet hate) they will try and send me a file with their portfolio in it. And then they go!

Its a shame because I love to chat, if you come to me and ask me anything I will always be transparent and truthful and talk to you about what I do or how I did it. I have had some great conversations with loads of like minded newbies, but I am for ever cautious that they are trying to sell me something.

I guess this sort of thing has been around since the stone age though, how many times have you walked into a shop and the sales person has treated you like a friend?
