Breath-focus, either during meditation or anytime you're stressed out, is the best way I know of how to silence the negative mental chatter. Just a minute or two of focusing on the sound and sensations of breathing will silence the mind and give you a chance to replace negativity with positive mental images and emotions.

I have also found it excellent for that. What breathing exercises do you do?

Breath-focus is simply having a 'breathing experience' where you become aware of the physical sensations of breathing. I don't guide or force the breath in any way, just let it be and observe/experience this semi-automatic function we take for granted. Presto... quiet mind!

When I'm on the bike (I'm an ultra-distance cyclist) I focus on the exhale whenever I'm going hard. I make the exhale as strong and steady as I can, expelling all of the CO2 and opening up my lungs (letting the inhale take care of itself). People have commented on how I never look like I'm breathing hard. It's true. I'm not, even when I'm going hard. The breath is always calm and deep, never frantic and shallow. I guess that's the only real breathing "exercise" I do!
