A little inspiration for a college dropout...

Hello All,

Its been awhile since I posted in the WF. Recently I watched this video that really inspired me to get back into the business of making some serious cash.

I currently do not have a college degree and never did well in High School but I have always believed that those things didn't really matter and as long as you have passion and motivation anyone can be rich and successful.

Anyway, here is a little video for some inspiration for anyone who is teaching themselves how to be successful...

Cheers,
Andrew

Great video - I agree. I never went to highschool or college/University. I managed to get out of the system and work how I want to make ends meet.

Looking back, I do wish that I had pursued more of an academic career. Seeing all my friends working for companies with a thriving and successful career, it made me realize the importance of education. Don't get me wrong, having a piece of paper does not mean a thing if you do not put that practical education to good use. However, I think education is an important asset... it acts as an insurance or a back up plan... it gives you skills for the workforce. No one wants to hire some dead beat with no education or experience. People without degrees are more likely to live mediocre lives, eventually leading them to debt with risky ventures.

Since I do not have a degree or any educational background myself, I focused on interpersonal skills, developed confidence, communication skills....I learned how to relate to people from all walks of life. Having this skill will help you to connect you with like minded people to do business ventures with.

The key is to pursue what you are passionate about. If you are passionate about a subject, educate yourself, learn it, master it and take action...

Yeah I couldn't agree more. I do plan on getting an education I just don't know if I will do it the traditional way. I like how he says if success was a family tree you would find 'hard work' and 'education' somewhere together at the base but 'school' is just a distant relative.

As long as you become educated and put it to use then you can be just as successful as anyone else.

I graduated lowest of my class, never went to college, and even so have build multiple businesses online and I'm now even beginning to start businesses in the physical world.

College is only meant for certain people in my opinion, but really.. I don't see the point of it. And in the future, as our world progresses into the new era, college is going to be even more worthless because all companies want are people who have skills, not degrees.

P.S. The post below mine by butterballs8 is a better way to look at this, I wouldn't want a nurse or doctor to give my sister a kidney transplant if they haven't achieved the proper training. I just think that the idea behind college is a bit off of where it used to be. Because in most scenarios, going into it the only way you can REALLY gain experience is by doing. Even a doctor going in for the first time on a patient is completely lost even with proper training.

It all boils down to what you want to do for a living.

An engineer, electrician, accountant, pilot, nurse, doctor, law, psychology, management?

If you pick any of these careers, you need learn the skill and acquire the knowledge to be certified in order to work and get paid....this is what college/university is for.

As an entrepreneur, you can be joe schmoe and work in the comfort of your own home in your pajamas...all you need is start up money, ambition, brilliant idea(s), marketing skills and the ability to stay positive and focused. Not many people have the discipline and determination to pull through and make it as a full time job that pays the bills.

Most people prefer the safe route (working 9-5, collecting their monthly check to pay bills etc)

Since I myself do not have any kind of academic background, I have volunteered for many organizations which helped to build a strong ethical character on my resume.

If I had the time or energy, I probably would sacrificed 1-2 years vocational school to acquire a skill... being an entrepreneur can be exciting... but it is tough...and takes years to "make it". and when you're running dry out of money..... then what?!

Great video! Parents can make a difference when they feel their children are being "led" down the wrong path.

I remember when my son was in grade 4, the teacher sent home hours of homework every night. My son became stressed and anxious. I spoke with the teacher and said I would ensure he did the work enough to understand what ever concept she was teaching but I was not prepared to spend 3-4 hours a night making him do the work....there was more to life. She said he would have to do it because that was what was "required". I discussed my concerns with the principal, to no avail. So...I took matters into my own hands......I finished his homework everynight.

    The right solution??????

    No!

It was the only one I felt I had at the time. I needed to work full-time so couldn't home-school him and I didn't want him getting left behind in school.

Like most things, until the majority of society steps up and demands serious changes in our education system, it will never change. In the meantime, it's up to parents to support the individuality of their child.

      Hi Jacqueline

couldnt agree more, I can't be doing with these academics who brainwash our children into believing life is all about your qualifications!
I live in the uk & have three children aged 13-17 who are in the process of 'education'.
I never went to college, no choice in the matter thats the way it was, but to encourage ALL children onto higher education in my opinion is not the way forward & what really concerns me {in the UK} is that our kids go onto university :-) have a fabulous time, hopefully achieve a decent grade in a REAL subject then WHAT?

Hey wake up there are no jobs!! Or what jobs are available they are over subscribed & I believe employers are just raising the bar higher & higher!

Oh & by the way lets not forget the student loan that they have acquired circa £40-60,000 ..............happy days NOT!

What I am trying do is to encourage my kids to 'think outside the box' don't get on the WHEEL!!!

      Thats what the government wants/needs!

What we need to do is to encourage them to have the courage to be creative & use the technology ie: internet to create a business!

That is my plan as I have been on the 'wheel' for far too long creating income/taxes for those in goverment to fritter away......no more!

Go for it, be strong & have courage!

      Michael

I couldn't agree more. There is no doubt that education is important but it just feels like our education system is failing so many kids these days. When you are meant to feel stupid and irresponsible because the subjects in class don't hold your attention you instantly assume you are just destined to do poorly with the rest of your life. That is how schools make some kids feel.

I am going to take my education into my own hands. I will learn about the things that interest me and that will benefit me and my personal goals and I won't have to spend nearly as much money to do it.

I am excited to start getting back into internet marketing and possibly expanding that outside the internet. I want to start a business and work for myself and I am not going to let my high school grades and lack of 4 year degree hold me back.

    Thanks for sharing

Very disturbing, yet powerful words! I love the idea and I love the thoughts! Thanks for sharing this awesome thoughts!

I keep telling my friends “a degree won’t buy you a cheese burger, but an intelligent mind will!”

Not intelligent in the commonly thought sense.

People just need to wake up, not be sheep and think for themselves. Don't need to be "intelligent" to do that.

    - I agree. Because when someone started a new business, it is important that you have your own ideas and passion in your business. You can still make it successful not only on what you’ve learned from school, but also on self discovery. Just take a risk and keep it on track.

Here is how I motivate people who drop out or avoid college.

"Congratulations. You just saved thousands and will be 4 years ahead of everyone else."

Honestly college is worthless for the vast majority of people but they don't realize it and can't except it.

I have managed multiple people with degrees making the same pay as a guy out of high school. I have watched people with multiple degrees work the same jobs as me, with more experience than me, make less than me.

In this country we have an epidemic of delaying life. People put off living. They put off working. They put off everything. And college is part of that problem.

Work at 16? I can't I have to get good grades to get into college.
Work at 18? I need to get my degree first.
Work at 22? The job I really want requires a grad degree.
Work at 26? Holy crap I have to work?

Seriously if you are young you need to rethink your life and start doing vs. studying. The smartest guy doesn't win. The driven guy does.

Unless what you truly want to do requires a degree because of unions, associations, and etc (teachers, lawyers, doctors, etc) you should just get out there and take the entry level jobs in that field. In four years you will be so far ahead of those who went to college it isn't even funny.

EDIT: Why should you listen to me?

I scored in the 98th or 99th percentile in all standard testing I have ever taken. Basically that means I could do anything I wanted.

People pushed me to do homework and take High School seriously because I "needed" to get into college. I slacked off and had fun. I didn't need to study or do homework to ace the test. So I didn't do it. In classes that grade heavy on testing I scored A's those that focused on papers and homework in general I did worse in because if I didn't have the work done before I left school for the day it wasn't getting done. My time was my time.

After high school I took nearly a year off and did nothing but hang out with friends.

I was 19 (two months from 20) when I got my first job (no paper route or anything before that). That first job was full time (40hr/wk minus a few weeks in Jan & Feb where it might be 32-35hr and around Xmas where it might be up to 50hr) and paid about $1.50 over minimum wage (don't let people tell you that you need a minimum wage job, just avoid that crap).

I left that job about 2 years later for my first management job. 4 months at that job and I was over seeing 3 stores (multi-unit management). And I left this second job for more money and not having to drive as much.

I bought my first Corvette at 23 when I reached what had always been my salary goal for life. It took me years to move past that and realize I had limited myself.

Growing up my goal was to own a Corvette and make $30K+ a year. I never even got a job till I was 19 (almost 20) and hit that goal in under 4 years.

I am 34 now and have a personal income in the 85th percentile. And the biggest thing holding me back is myself. The lack of degree has never held me back.

I have held multiple jobs where the job description says "degree preferred" or "degree required".

So skip the degree and realize the only thing that can hold you back and the only thing that can make you successful is yourself.

There is no failure. Failure is a myth. Every single one of you are successful. Only question are you successful in the way you want to be or are you held back by unconscious success and relative success?

I remembered reading a post many years ago. The article was about how education was holding you back from accomplishing your dreams. I never took it that way. How your life turns out is your own doing and should not blame other things. But that's just me. Education is very important but not a requirement to become successful.

"Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught." -Oscar Wilde

There's still a good life to a college dropout. Steve Jobs, a college dropout also but now, He is known all over the world to be one of the billionaires. You can also be like him. There are lots of good opportunities even though you have dropped and not pursue your college degree. You just have to gain confidence and prove to others that you are willing to learn and that you can do the things that others can.

Always remember, there are lots of things that can be learn outside the school. REMEMBER that!

If you personally ask me, education has nothing to do with your success! Education has 2 important features:-

    1. Getting knowledge
    2. Helps you to get a job

When you have your own way to be successful and earn money, education becomes nothing! Education is just a ticket for you to get a job out there, that's it! If you wanna make money there are 100 of ways that never requires any education background but your confidence, hard-work and the ability to think out of the box..

    Anyway great video friend!
