I think I made a sick IMDB list guys...

Hey there!

Two weeks ago I made this IMDB list.
It features all the films and documentaries that I've seen with a strong existential theme. Some of them have really made a huge impression on me and changed the way I think about certain things in life for good.

If you're into meaningful and existential movies, I'm sure you're going to love watching the films you haven't seen from this list.

Which movies/documentaries would you add to this list?
Let us know!

Cheers,
Seph

I went through your list and several of my favorites are listed there. Thanks for this, by the way. Other movies I would recommend include Girl Interrupted, Being John Malkovich, Erin Brockovich, Cast Away, and Pan's Labyrinth.

      Thanks Cobaki,
I have seen all of those except for Girl Interrupted and Erin Brockovich. I will definitely check them out! Theme-wise those others just didn't make it into my list, although I could add Being John Malkovich. I just didn't like that movie that much.

Waking life is brilliant. I saw you mentioning it on another thread here and decided to give it a watch. Glad I did!

Yes, indeed I did, and for a good reason.
I love Linklater's movies and I love the fact that he has such a broad array of experts from different fields taking part in his movie.

I'm glad that you liked it

Excellent idea, I like a lot of movies from your list like Groundhog Day or As Good as It Gets. Bill Murray is a very good actor.

Did you get a chance to see Broken Flowers?
It's Bill Murray at his finest. =)

I was glad to see "The Bucket List" and "The Truman Show" on your list. "As Good As It Gets" is one of my all time favorites. I would like to add four if you don't mind. The first being "Meet John Doe" w/ Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck, which if I had my way, would be required viewing to elementary school kids. The second would be "Hobsons Choice" the 1956? release w/ Charles Laughton and John Mills, not the remake, and then "The Fountainhead" and "Atlas Shrugged". Both adapted from the Ayn Rand novels of the same name, and highly recommended reading.

    Fun thread! Thanks!

      Hey there Donald,

Thanks for your recommendations, I will watch them this week.
Atlas Shrugged is great indeed, I have read the book and seen the movies. The second movie was pretty dissapointing though.
I like that you're into the classical movies.

Sure shawshank is a great movie, but it's highly overrated at the same time. I didn't add it to this list because it's #1 on IMDB and I think it's in almost every other IMDB list as well.

The point of this list is to look further than Hollywood and the US for that matter. There are so many great Italian, Russian, Japanse and German movies out there that no American would ever care to watch. I think that's a shame and therefore I like to promote watching both the classics and the latest movies, American movies and movies from outside of the US.

        Hi there!

I hope you enjoy the movies. The very last line in "Meet John Doe" says it all! "Hobsons Choice", to me is very inspiring, and extremely funny. I have to agree with your take on "The Fountainhead". It did not translate well on the screen, although I thought that the courtroom scene was well worth the price of admission. I do think that it fits in with your theme tho.

I agree, there are great international films. If you go to Independent Film Channel, you can catch them.

        Again - Fun thread!

It's nearly impossible to translate any Ayn Rand novel to the screen. Most of her works are huge. Any person interested in her philosophy (objectivism) should definitely work their way through her books before watching the movies, I think.

Anyways, I'm excited to watch the movies you recommended. I will keep you posted via PM.

I found a kinsman! Yep! Definitely read her books! John Galt's speech in "Atlas Shrugged" is spot on. Looking forward to your thoughts on the movies.

That speech is just epic, I agree.

Eric Brockovich was already in my watchlist and it just moved to the top. Can't wait to see it.

I just finished 'Coffee and Cigarettes'. It won't make this list, but it was a pretty interesting film. (starrring Steve Buscemi and Bill Murray)

Some movies acted in the 90s and early 2000 are still good, they have stood the test of times. I just love ShawShank Redemption. Most of the movies of these times are not of good quality, you just watch them once and that
