How to be happy every day?

Hey guys. I'm like most people - I experience happiness now and then. There are people that are happy every day though. It's needless to say how happiness correlates to motivation and productivity, so it would be great if I knew how to become happy in a few minutes or so. Do some of you belong to the group of people that somehow manage to be happy every day? If yes, how do you do it?

P.S. I brainstormed a little and I couldn't find out what triggers the happiness for me, that's why I need your help. Your input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I heard one pastor say "happiness is a choice.God provides for happiness". Personal growth can lead to happiness, especially "when you discover a part of yourself you never knew existed"-Les brown

Feed your mind positve, motivational matter everyday(i.e. read Bible for your faith)
    Listen to motivational audio daily
Associate with other successful, happy people

For me, being happy is a decision just as almost any emotion is.

Let me give you an example of what I mean. When my daughters were teenagers, they had gotten into it over one of them wearing the other's jeans without permission.

My daughter who was the owner of the jeans was going off on her sister in a huge angry rant when the phone rang and I answered it. It was her boyfriend. I handed her the the phone telling her who was calling. She immediately turned that anger off and turned it into happiness and joy. You could hear it in her voice as she said very sweetly, Hi! How are you? No, I would love to come over for dinner. Please thank your mom for me. (In an almost sickly sweet tone of voice, lol!)

When she was off the phone, she didn't pick up the anger again and tear into her sister or slam things around while she did her chores because she was harboring anger like she had done in the past while angry. But rather started whistling as she hurriedly did her chores in order to be at her boyfriend's for dinner in time.

Anyway the point is, is that you have the power to turn on or off any emotion you desire to. You have the power to choose whether you will be happy or something else.

For me, I just only think that I am very lucky. Think of this, a lot of people suffers, a lot of people fights for their life. We are lucky we are not them. We should be thankful that this day we are still here and despite of some minor trouble we were still given the chance to make things a little bit better and happier. Don't spend your time getting sad, life is just so short so forget about the things that can make you sad but focus on things that can make you truly happy.

One block to happiness is that people look for it outside of themselves. Happiness comes from within. It's our hopes and expectations of happiness from events and circumstances that make us happy. If it were not so, the same things would make everyone happy.

For example, I was happy when the Green Bay Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Superbowl. I'm sure Pittsburgh fans were disappointed though. The same external event didn't make everyone happy.

Because happiness comes from within, I believe to a large degree it's a choice. Each day when we get up we can let our circumstances determine our state of mind, or we can choose our state of mind in spite of our circumstances.

Another problem with "happiness" is that people have unrealistic expectations. Happiness is not a constant state of being. Because you're not happy does not mean you're unhappy, or that anything is wrong. It doesn't mean something is broken and needs to be fixed.

Instead of chasing happiness like it's a prize, just be ready to be happy. Don't overlook the small, daily joys because you're looking for something bigger. Embrace the simple pleasures of life.

Too many folks create their own misery by always looking at what's wrong in their world. Look for the good in others and situations and happiness will find you. You don't have to chase it down.

Last tidbit . . . if you really want to get a jump on happiness, volunteer some time to worthwhile causes like delivering Meals on Wheels, teaching someone to read, or being a Big Brother or Big Sister. Doing good deeds like this builds real self-esteem, not the shallow fluff that feeds our vanity. As your self-esteem climbs, so will your happiness. It's hard to be stuck in unhappiness when you truly feel good about who you are.

    Hopes that helps.

I am a happy person. I had someone tell me a few weeks ago that after hearing my story, he never would have guessed it by looking at me. Meaning, I had a bad year and you never would know it. (Spouse deployed, came back, death in the family, divorce from spouse, move from Germany to New Hampshire, back in with my parents).

That was the bad side of 2012. But I had a great year, too. I traveled a lot. Went to Greece, France, traveled throughout Germany. I lived in Germany and made a lot of friends while there.

People ask me how I do it.

Happiness is a choice. Like any choice, sometimes it isn't an easy one to make. Some days are harder than others but it is worth it to always have a "glass half full" attitude to see the best or the bright side in any situation.

But, the real reason why I am able to remain happy and at peace with my life despite all the difficulties I am facing is because of God. Believing, reading the Bible, and praying have kept me sane in the worst of moments.

I was in Greece a few years ago and I was dancing around the pool with my family and with the other hotel guests. We got back to our seats. The waiter poured the wine and said, "we eat, drink, enjoy the music, dance, and we forget all our problems."

I feel that is only part of the story, though, even though it was a lovely moment.

We all have problems. We may all remember our problems. But it's the happy and at peace ones who believe in their hearts that things will work out. So, that enables us to enjoy what's in front of us and live in the moment.

And no, I am not in a dream bubble. I have been accused of that in the past. Thank you for understanding it isn't the case! I keep up with current events. My favorite fiction genre is horror! I think being happy is mostly about enjoying life and being thankful that we have the chance to experience it.

There is no limit or exact figure of what is called being "RICH", therefore many of the people are trying to look for MORE and MORE by doing business, build business empire, etc. There's no end to that.

Therefore, Happiness is feeling satisfied with what we have and be at the moment.

  • Hi iChristian,

Start every day with a gratitude list of 10 things.

These 10 reasons need to be different every day and heart felt, like:

"I'm grateful I have this Forum and these Warriors to talk to"

"I'm happy to be able to take my next breath."

You get the idea. Perhaps you'll find a sense of happiness growing out of this practice.
No joke. Try it. And keep it up as long as it takes for it to dawn on you just how happy you can be with all you have been given. All the best to you.

Well we all know that when we are HAPPY the motivated and productive we are.
Happiness is positive emotional state. Happiness is just a matter of choice, so even though you're in a very bad situation if you just choose to be happy then you'll be happy.

A great success coach Anthony Robbins mentioned this
    "Emotion creates motion."

It all boils down with an option.

Happiness is an emotional state that can be specifically triggered and changed, just like any other state!

First of all, ask your self what your beliefs are about happiness? Do you believe you must achieve something, make a certain amount of money, etc. in order to be happy? If so, this will cause you to not be happy until you reach this amount- and when you do, you still won't be happy because of you rbeliefs about happiness!

In order to get rid of this belief, you must question it. If you question anything enough, it begins to lose power. Here's some to get you started:

    1. Where did I get this belief from? Are they credible? Are they happy? Sometimes we pick up beliefs that simply aren't true because of what society thinks we should feel, believe, or act, BUT if these people aren't happy... then why listen to them?

    2. How is this belief stopping you from achieving what you want?

Also, once you break down that belief, build up a new one:

Happiness comes from within. It is an emotional state that is easily achieved by me at any time, anywhere no matter what is going on around me.

So you stick to it, ask yourself some more Q's:
(I provided sample answers- try to get as detailed as possible, and WRITE IT DOWN! It works)

    1. What pleasure have I associated with NOT changing?
-I get to "fit in" and not have to work for my emotions. It's easier.

    2. What pleasure have I associated WITH changing?
-Being happy all the time, having more energy, improving all of my relationships, etc.

    3. What pain have I associated with NOT changing?
    -Depression, missed opportunities, etc.

    4. What pain have I associated WITH changing?
    - Making a choice to be happy, doing a slight bit of work to be happy every day!

The point of this exercise is to give yourself leverage to change by showing you how ridiculous it is to not change.

The next teqnique I use is questions. I use questions to focus my mind to focus only on the positive.

    For example:
I'm having one of those "days" where nothing seems to be going right/feel lazy/feel off. Instead of surrendering to these feelings, I simply ask myself a series of questions:
"If I wanted to, what could I do to make myself happier?"
    "What is good about today?"
"What is ONE thing I can do right now to make myself feel better?"

These get your mind OFF of being lazy/off and onto getting into a better emotional state. I find this to be absolutely INVALUABLE!

And of course practice meditation daily. This one is the MOST powerful way to feel happy all the time. I have a great meditation I got from "The genie within" By Joe? Carpenter. My brain litterally buzzes with energy from that meditation- It's the best high I've ever gotten!

Another GREAT book, I mean incredible book is Anothny Robbin's - Unleash the Giant Within. Get it in hardcopy and get a high lighter- every page is a gold mine of information.

Hope this helps! I am ALWAYS happy! My life only gets BETTER and BETTER!

Happiness is a result of your daily habits, not your personal circumstances. Those who say that we can "choose" to be happy are correct, but I think people who aren't already in the habit of choosing happiness may find that advice confusing.

I think it's all about creating the daily routine in your life that's conducive to happiness. I've found that the most surefire ways to be happy are to practice two habits every single day: Exercise and meditation. If you practice them regularly, I think you'll find that you're able to make the choice to be happy more often.

Most emotions are habits, but at their core they are choices. Anger, happiness...I really think if you made a habit of creating positive emotion within yourself on a continual basis THAT would be how you were.

Why am I happy to day? Because it's a good day...
No...as a response to it being a good day you chose to be happy.

Internalizing that your choices are far more impacting than you imagine can only strengthen you.

Wow, good question. I personally think that happiness is a state of mind. Efforts to make us happier nourish this state. It's certain that it is not possible to be happy 24 hours 24 seven days a week, but maintaining a happy state of mind, is given our days and those around us a positive tone.

    Have a nive day

I don't think we can be happy all of the time. We need balance or else the happiness that we do experience will have less value; it will be diluted. It's like sleep. If you stayed awake all of the time and did not go to sleep, your body would run down and degrade into inefficient behaviour.

On the other hand, I say that we need to take control of negative thoughts, negative responses, negative input we receive from the outside world and re-frame or redirect it in a more positive way that supports our purpose, our goals and our daily activity.

In other words, we can't expect to be happy all of the time, but we definitely do not have to allow unhappiness to affect our joy and productivity. We have the power to control it and make it happen. It is our choice. Choose to be happy!

I wouldn't say I am happy 100% of the time. But I am happy every single day. Are there things I would like to change to make myself even happier? Sure but I am happy with where I am.

If you are not happy with where you are you need to walk to the bathroom right now. Above most sinks there is a mirror. Now look in that mirror. See that person in the mirror? That person is the reason you are not happy. Period, end of story.

Not happy with you job or business? No one is making you do it besides yourself.
Not happy with your significant other? No one is making you stay with them.
Not happy with your friends? Find new friends.

The list can go on and on. Hell there is one more big one.

Not happy with anything? Change your attitude. More _____ isn't going to make you happy if you have the wrong attitude.

So if you want to be happy be happy. If that requires changing things in life change them. But if you can't bring yourself to change them maybe you need to accept that you are happy with your life as it is and the problem is your outlook on life.

You don't have to have an exotic car to be happy. But if you are like me and think that would make you very happy what are you doing to be able to buy one?

Personally I think 'happiness' is an over rated condition, it is sought after because genuine happiness is fleeting, it is not meant to be a permanent emotion otherwise you would become like a happiness zombie-feeling content, equal with the world and not anxious is to be encouraged-this is what people sometimes confuse with happiness. Enjoy being happy when it arrives, but don;t expect this to be your permanent condition, it aint natural!
Positive, peaceful and not worried, strive for these-and treating others well goes a long way towards feeling this. Sermon over....

To be happy or not to be... Many of you described as a choice. I Deeply agree! ) And how to be happy or how to be With happiness?
Isn't this related with our personal mind power? It is. I can decide what I can think (most of the time) and I can decide how I will feel right now.

I understand (and I use and practice in my behaviour) mind 'power' as a circle of thoughts.
It starts with a question (if not a routine reaction already). Just like an example on search engines. I ask (empowering or disempowering question) e.g. How can enjoy in a new task?
This is the start of a new thought. And here comes The focus. I focus this towards the mind pattern... this is like search engine's algorythm.
The next step is my reaction or result or word or emmm..action. In this step my mind (that's still me ) adds few nuggets of feelings / emotions.

The best part here.. it All happens within my mind. I'm the Painter...waka,w aka.

Not an easy way to learn... after years and months of learning the opposite in order to become 'happy' after I buy a thing (but don't tell this to great companies...could be rude ).

i don't believe that there are people who are happy every day as you say. happiness is an arousal state, after a while it wears off and we go back to normal. the same is true of all emotions. if you achieve a goal for example, you are happy for a time and then you go back to normal. if you experience a loss, you are sad for a while then you go back to normal. if you were happy all the time, you would have NO MOTIVATION to improve and achieve. why would you want to if you were always happy? it's not a natural state.

You can condition yourself to be happy most of the times, I agree, it's a matter of choice.
The problem is, for me at least, sometimes it's easier to connect with yourself by feeling down. Self pitty is a road to nowhere, but I use it sometimes to justify things like not taking enough action ect.
And then I slap myself as soon as I realise what I'm doing.

Also, the quickest way for me to start feeling happy is to take just 5-10 minutes to think of all the things I'm greatful for, at the moment, and in my life in general. This puts me in a completelly different state immediatelly.

Nobody is happy all the time, but some people are definitely more happy than others and that's because they choose to be and work on it.

Here's 3 tips that helps you to be happier.

    1) Get rid of the past and anger if you have any
    2) Smile as often as you can
    3.) Kindness

Implement this 3 daily especially no 2 in you're everyday life and you see difference very soon.

Happiness is a choice. Choose to be happy Don't say "I'll be happy if..." or "I'll be happy when...". You make the choice you are happy. The previous puts conditions on your happiness when all you have to do is be happy. It's just making a choice.

  • The true underlying ability to be happy every day is to produce something of VALUE every day.

When I am productive, I am centered and happy within my sphere of daily accomplishment.

For me that is a lot. Simple, but a lot. And, because of it I am simply happy.

    Hi iChristian,

that sure is a tough, question.

I documented a bit (and my product does also help you on that very topic, but I'm not here to promote myself) and there are ways you can improve your happiness.

Being happy every day? It is possible.
But you shouldn't expect it to be achievable in 1 day.

There are, though, some ways you can improve your overall happiness.
I'll share one of mine: Salted Memories.

It's a technique where you use physical sensation to summon good memories.
It helps you when you are a bit low on energy.

For example, I like to focus on the motion of 3 finger pinch of salt.
I feel my fingers, and during the day I link this motion to a memory (the same one) I decided beforehand.
Then, when I am in trouble, I use the motion to automagically summon the feeling.

    Let's be crystal clear:
this won't solve the problem, but it will help you during the rough times.

Happiness, as many of the fellow warriors told you, is a state of mind.
    BUT
it is also how you build the world around you.

Yes, happiness comes from within, but if we are surrounded by things and people we like, it's LOT MORE easier.

So, what would be my advice?
First: Become the person you'd like to meet.

Act in the best possible way, think about "What the -best- me would do?".
Some times you'd like to do the easier version, but the -best- you, wouldn't accept this.
and everytime you refuse to become better, you lose something, and the world around you suddenly darkens.

    Then: Build deep, profound, relationships.
When we build this kind of relationship we create a net of people that can support us, that you will gain knowledge from.
    Give your relationship a boost.

    And finally:
    Meditate.
My new book is all about that (with a twist, obviously ).
    Meditation DOES help you.
Creative visualization is also a good advice (I saw in the previous post), but you should be careful to not be greedy or you'll end up in a worst situation.

Be open, try to feel what you eat or be present during the day.

And if you need some more help, feel free to PM me

Start something that you can look forward to or at least improve on each day. It can be a hobby or it can be something more tangible like a website that you intend to grow. For example, I started my blog in late January 2013 and already it has led me to acquiring three internships, freelance work, connections, guest posts on top blogs in my niche (personal development,) and personal satisfaction. It is something I've created on my own so it gives me a sense of pride plus it's something I can work on anytime I want.

Happiness is rarely self-sustainable, but it sure helps to have something to keep you busy.

I need to explain how I define happiness. Truly, I can be crying (and not the tears of joy variety) and still consider myself happy.

It's not about feeling joy, euphoria, or laughing hard ... Though all those things come much easier when feeling happiness.

Rather, I think true, inner happiness and inner strength coexist. Both have their roots in understanding that things may not turn out perfectly (but they will likely still turn out positively if we let them!)

When my personal stuff was really heating up, I prayed quite a bit. I even kept a prayer journal and a log of all the things that were going on in my head and life that needed prayers. Mainly I used it as a way to make requests to God without creating a mind spiral.

I got this idea from the novel, The Help.

About a year after I created my list we decided to get a divorce which on the surface could seem traumatizing. I took a look at my list (it was sort of long) and every single thing on there was basically fixed/answered by not being together anymore.

I was NOT expecting it but reading through the list made me realize that things DO work out but it's sometimes in a way we don't expect.

While having all this going on, I still managed to have the time of my life. Seriously! I lived in Germany and instead of dwelling on the fact that my husband and I weren't cohesive, I traveled and did stuff with my friends and lived authentically. I have a lot of great memories and strong friendships that will likely last a lifetime ...

I could have chosen to wallow... But my approach was different. I decided to LIVE.

But, understand that I wake up expecting the day to be good ... That I will have the ability to surround myself with things I love including people that I love. Music. Random dancing to a song I like. Making a salad using lettuce I am growing and plucking wild greens to go with it on the way to my lettuce patch. Chocolate - making and eating. Movies, reading a great novel. And, I love my online business so working on that brings me joy.

Sad news? I bake bread while listening to Gypsy Jazz so I can reflect. Feeling social? I'll go out!

My days are spent in this way... I always know I can create a joyful experience no matter what the circumstance is or how I feel.

I'm absolutely convinced that happiness is a habit rather than something you strive for. Most people are in the habit of 'I will happy when' and end up stuck in that state for the whole of there lives.

The thing that has given me most happiness is staying mindful, this is keeping your thoughts in the present moment rather than being caught up in thoughts of the past and future which tire you out and puts you in a trance if indulged to often.
Here's a video that explains the advantages of mindfulness:

I actually just finished reading Robert Holden's Be Happy eBook. There is a lot of great information in there but the book is basically an advertisement for his course. But there are a few good tips that I got out of the book.

For example, no one can be completely happy all the time. People will always experience ups and downs. Happiness comes from within - try meditating, even praying (if you are religious), every day. Everyone has the potential to be happy. Forget the past, forgive. Go out of your way to help someone everyday and you will feel happier inside.

There are a lot of tips that you can get from that book but those are the ones that I can remember off the top of my head. You should check out the book, it is quite interesting.

There's a difference between temporary moments of pleasure (such as laughing at a funny joke or enjoying a bite of desert) and true happiness which comes from being content and at peace with yourself, who you are, where you are in life and what you are doing. To achieve this last part, you need to find your own true passion. Find something that makes your own life meaningful and relevant, not just for yourself but for others. Seek to leave a lasting legacy that others can enjoy. Look outside yourself for fulfillment and you will find your own heart is filled with lasting joy.

How to be happy: Tips for cultivating contentment - MayoClinic.com

How to be happy: What science tells us

Only 10 percent or so of the variation in people's reports of happiness can be explained by differences in their circumstances. It appears that the bulk of what determines happiness is due to personality and -- more importantly -- thoughts and behaviors that can be changed.

So, yes, you can learn how to be happy -- or at least happier.

Although you may have thought, as many people do, that happiness comes from being born rich or beautiful or living a stress-free life, the reality is that people who have wealth, beauty or less stress are not happier on average than those of who don't enjoy those blessings.

People who are happy seem to intuitively know that their happiness is the sum of their life choices, and their lives are built on the following pillars:
      • Devoting time to family and friends
      • Appreciating what they have
      • Maintaining an optimistic outlook
      • Feeling a sense of purpose
      • Living in the moment
How to be happy: Practice, practice, practice

If you have been looking for happiness, the good news is that your choices, thoughts and actions can influence your level of happiness. It's not as easy as flipping a switch, but you can turn up your happiness level. Here's how to get started on the path to creating a happier you.

      Invest in relationships

Surround yourself with happy people. Being around people who are content buoys your own mood. And by being happy yourself, you give something back to those around you.

Friends and family help you celebrate life's successes and support you in difficult times. Although it's easy to take friends and family for granted, these relationships need nurturing.

Build up your emotional account with kind words and actions. Be careful and gracious with critique. Let people know that you appreciate what they do for you or even just that you're glad they're part of your life.

      Express gratitude

Gratitude is more than saying thank you. It's a sense of wonder, appreciation and, yes, thankfulness for life. It's easy to go through life without recognizing your good fortune. Often, it takes a serious illness or other tragic event to jolt people into appreciating the good things in their lives. Don't wait for something like that to happen to you.

Make a commitment to practice gratitude. Each day identify at least one thing that enriches your life. When you find yourself thinking an ungrateful thought, try substituting a grateful one. For example, replace "my sister forgot my birthday" with "my sister has always been there for me in tough times."

Let gratitude be the last thought before you go to sleep. Let gratitude also be your first thought when you wake up in the morning.

      Cultivate optimism

Develop the habit of seeing the positive side of things. You needn't become a Pollyanna -- after all, bad things do happen. It would be silly to pretend otherwise. But you don't have to let the negatives color your whole outlook on life. Remember that what is right about you almost always trumps what is wrong.

If you're not an optimistic person by nature, it may take time for you to change your pessimistic thinking. Start by recognizing negative thoughts as you have them. Then take a step back and ask yourself these key questions:
      • Is the situation really as bad as I think?
      • Is there another way to look at the situation?
      • What can I learn from this experience that I can use in the future?
      Find your purpose

People who strive to meet a goal or fulfill a mission -- whether it's growing a garden, caring for children or finding one's spirituality -- are happier than those who don't have such aspirations.

Having a goal provides a sense of purpose, bolsters self-esteem and brings people together. What your goal is doesn't matter as much as whether the process of working toward it is meaningful to you.

Try to align your daily activities with the long-term meaning and purpose of your life. Research studies suggest that relationships provide the strongest meaning and purpose to your life. So cultivate meaningful relationships.

Are you engaged in something you love? If not, ask yourself these questions to discover how you can find your purpose:
      • What excites and energizes me?
      • What are my proudest achievements?
      • How do I want others to remember me?
      Live in the moment

Don't postpone joy waiting for a day when your life is less busy or less stressful. That day may never come.

Instead, look for opportunities to savor the small pleasures of everyday life. Focus on the positives in the present moment, instead of dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.

I feel happy when I cross items in my Todo list.

Have Items in your list for

    1) Personal growth, Family time etc.. that you have to spend no matter what (These items change rarely)

    2) And items for your day to day life, like Business or professional life that keep on changing everyday or frequently

Once done, cross the item in the list. You will feel productive and feel happy. I feel that way.
