Too many 'shiny objects'? New 'method' that needs to be exploited before saturation? Too much information?

Sound familiar? I just thought it would be interesting to open a thread and discuss what some of your common frustrations related to overwhelm are and share strategies with each other on how to combat these things.

So, what are you overwhelmed with?
#overwhelmed
  • I admit I get overwhelmed by too much technical information. When I get bombarded with terms I don't understand or when I try to use new software I get really cranky and don't want to touch it cause I feel so under-prepared.

But I found that if I settle down and calm my thoughts from the race mode they are in, things begin to make more sense. If I slow down and digest bite size pieces of information I can usually get through the blockage. Thanks for the thread. It brings up a good point.

I can relate with the technical info. I tend to hire out for those things nowadays, rather than try to do it myself.

Chunking down information/workload is a tried and tested way, sometimes I need to remind myself to do this too.

It's funny that we know what to do (and that's to keep trying and just take action) but we never completely follow it. Humans huh?

It can be overwhelming when you have to meet a lot of deadlines, learn a lot of new things, and not to mention, attend to the needs of your family which can also be a lot. Keeping the balance has always worked for me even if it’s really difficult to achieve.

It depends on what your purpose and timeframe is. That is the problem and the solution.
If you have to tackle a purpose that requires more than one person to get it done by a target date, you are going to be overwhelmed. I know this sounds simple, but most people don't think this through, even in successful corporations (think Microsoft, lol.)
So, you have to hire somebody or, for some purposes you have to take more time. I believe that practically every business today requires more than one person. That is why I am into collaboration.

I'm working on not getting overwhelmed in any area of life. I believe until you get that perfect balance in life, trying new things may result to stretching your energies a bit far. Self discovery - knowing what u r good at - aint easy.

I feel overwhelmed every time I finish a certain task/project way far the deadline and discover new things then I start procrastination. Wasting my time that not worth my time. I really want to avoid this kind of attitude.

I get overwhelmed by all the new products that continue to come out. You barely have enough time to get to know one product well, when you see something else sworn to make your life easier. It's frustrating.

I found a golden nugget that completely removed my compulsion toward shiny object emails.
It is basically to focus mainly on productive tasks for an hour at a time then after a break do another.
I find that when I take a break I am still thinking about doing productive tasks than reading these emails, I am just looking at how they are marketing the products than the actual product they are marketing.
I have written a post about goals on my blog that may help too.

I do feel a bit overwhelmed at times with everything I want to accomplish. Obviously I don't "have to" do any of it, but I plan on making this a business so I know it's a must if I want to live on my own terms.

So to understand what I'm overwhelmed with you have to have an idea of what I do. I teach game design and I post videos weekly on youtube. I also have a personal site. So my biggest pressure is keeping up. Making sure I have some new fresh content every week. Responding to subscribers and emails through my site. Also trying to build up my own knowledge to continue building better and better stuff.

I also have a store which I'm trying to populate with digital items and I'm also trying to build a brand new course for Udemy. Not to mention trying to optimize my site for SEO and learning how to effectively market my site/products.

Also doesn't help that I'm active duty military, so my time is limited. Sometimes I wonder if I'm doing too much at once or not enough.

Information Overload For Me. It's too hard to focus on one thing these days and make it work. There's always that nagging thought in your head 'What if that WSO or Program has something that I don't know about that could actually make me money?'

Same here. When I get going on something I neglect everything else. Balance is hard to keep for long.

I agree. A solid plan and the discipline to follow it, that's the cure.

I hone my planning skills through experience but discipline was a tough one.
I stumbled upon the answer by accident. My secret weapon: cycling! Working out is hard and painful but its physical. No need to think, I hop on my bike and just keep pushing... one more km! Its a very good way to spend my time. Health, and discipline as a bonus.

I usually don't get very overwhelmed. The reason for that is whenever I do start to feel the pressure rising that might lead to being overwhelmed, I take a step back and analyze what needs to be done to simplify. Its good to stay in the mindset of taking everyone a day at a time, although sometimes I have to prioritize and choose which projects I need to focus on and which ones I need to drop.

This thread hits close to home! Shiny object syndrome and information overload are my main problems right now. The more I read, the more new things I get to know and the more I want to read.. A neverending rabbit hole!

It's hard to focus, given I'm such a noob. Looking for a mentor would be a logical choice I guess

It is interesting that this thread is over 2 years old and the meaning has not changed in that time. I don't get overwhelmed because I use a daily to do list and try to stay focused on that.

If I see a new product, or shiny object as it is referred to, I usually do not buy it right away. I add it to my daily to list, and take some scheduled time to check it out then.

I even do that now on low priced WSO's of $10 or less. Over the years I impulsed purchased a lot of those and they sat on my hard drive where I never seemed to get back to them.

Those can even cause stress and helping you to feel overwhelmed because in the back of your mind you are thinking "I spent money on this, so I need to implement it". I've been there and no longer do that.

While I usually don't get overwhelmed I suffer from shiny objects syndrome. My tactic now is that I've unsubscribed from all IM lists except 2-3 which I really like and learn new things from. But I tend to avoid sales pages just to keep me focused on the course I am currently on right now.

My biggest problem is more procrastinating on things that need to get done in order to move forward. My biggest hurdle is creating a give-away product, creating the squeeze page, thank you and download page and start writing my auto responder series. While I know it's currently the number one priority I somehow avoid doing it... Sounds stupid but that's how it currently is with me.
I've overcome the product creation by choosing a PLR product to use for the start and write my own report (maybe make a video course out of it...) later on.
The only way to overcome that hurdle I found so far is to take baby steps each day instead of looking at the big picture.

I used to be overwhelmed. I was afraid gurus would take advantage of my ignorance as a beginner and seduce me into endlessly buying their stuff. So I simply read free information. But that led me to information overload

Fortunately, a friend taught me how to ask myself empowering questions...
