Criticized for waking up early

I decided to wake up early (5am), and when I told some people about it, they said they thought it was pointless. I got a few responses like this.

I have heard to old proverbs on early rising and was wonder why I was getting criticized for waking up early,

what do you think?

Don't listen to people's criticism when it comes your own personal choice to better yourself.

I started a 5a.m. routine months ago (after being a 9-10a.m. guy for too many years), and it's the best decision I made. Granted, it's not for everybody, but it's the only way I've been able to get things done. There are many positives to getting up early, so just do it, and don't worry about those who are too jealous or lazy or shortsighted to support you.

Do what is right for you and what works for you, and if that's getting up at 5am so you are more productive and achieve more each day, then do it and pay no attention to the naysayers.

Personally I've found that I get a lot more done when I wake up early and go to sleep early, even if I'm awake for the same number of hours that I would otherwise be. I'm a "night person" by nature, but a "morning person" by habit.

If people are criticizing you for it, it's probably because they just don't recognize the value of this habit, and/or they just have different goals than you that don't include being more productive. There's nothing wrong with that, but don't let it influence your own actions.

Do what makes you happy. I wake up around 5:30 to 6:00 am 3 to 4x a week to go for long, early morning walks even though I don't have to.

It provides me with energy for the entire day, it gets those endorphins pumping into my blood stream, and I'm far more productive during the day.

I've experimented with sleeping in, working out at different times of the day, and for me, waking up early works better for me. Sure, there are some days I sleep in, but lately I've been getting up early in the morning and I really enjoy it.

I too also work best in the mornings, but I dread doing it! After considering all my bodily signs, I think it came down to my mind being completely exhausted after the entire day, which yielded no good results in the evening. In the morning, your brain had time to shut down and now it's getting ready to tackle the day once again -- if you hit that time when it's "getting ready" then you'll be more productive. At least that's how I interpret myself

I would love to be able to rise at this time, I have a condition called delayed sleep phase disorder. It means that no matter how hard I try, I can't break the nocturnal sleeping pattern. I usually fall asleep around 5-6am and wake up around 12-1pm every day.

It's annoying as on the rare occasion when my sleeping pattern changes to a normal one temporarily (usually after a hard weekend drinking and my head is all over the place) I always find that I do get FAR more work done with an early rise and being awake during normal hours.

I have no reason why this is but I definitely notice it.

I've just recently started waking up at 5.00am instead of my usual 7.00am. I've yet to make much productive use of those 2 hours but I'm working on it. I think it is probably a good time to work on those "important, but not urgent" things - particularly all those training ebooks that I've bought but never quite got around to opening.

My head is on the pillow at 10pm most nights; rarely later than 11. If it is later, I set my alarm accordingly so I do get at least 6 hours sleep. Most times, though, I wake up at 5 anyway because my inner clock has adjusted to that time.

Between 10pm and midnight if I'm waking up at 5 or 530 am. On other nights I'll go to bed anywhere from 1am to 4am.

Are you just waking up with nothing to do?
    If so...strange
Are you waking up at 5 to sit, drink a cup of tea, get dressed, go for a nice long jog, or put RushFit or something similar and do an hour or so of workout?
Maybe you're playing your favorite game, or just reading the news before work?

It's a great time to gain some quiet, but if you got nothing to do, pointless.

Some of the days when I've gotten started before 7AM have been the most productive I've had. Work until 1 or 2PM non-stop and man does stuff get done. (Usually I start around 8:30.)

    Why?

    NO INTERRUPTIONS.

So ignore the people who are telling you it's pointless. Use the time to get stuff done.

I personally don't see the point in waking up as early as 5AM.

The only good reason is if you want to go online and do work that will push you forward to your goals. Or maybe even meditating and visualizing success for about 30 minutes.

The body needs to rest and if you can wake up when ever you feel like it, that is great too. I like to wake up when my body can sleep no more.

Exactly. So 10-5 is a good 7 hours of sleep, just as 11-6 or Midnight-7 or 1-8. It's all the same as far as getting proper rest is concerned.

The biggest benefit of an early start is the absence of interruptions, as others have mentioned. Under normal circumstances nobody is going to call you in those early hours. Nobody will be knocking at your door. Most businesses aren't open that early, so there's no reason to go anywhere. The early hours belong to YOU, and you can get a lot done.

But it all comes down to personal choice and tolerance. By that I mean some people need up to ten hours of sleep, depending on their lifestyle or health, so an early rise may not be feasible. But for those who can do it, it's certainly not pointless if they don't waste that time.

I'll add to this by saying imo every hour you're asleep before midnight seems to count as two slept after midnight.

I personally think that is a great time for you since your body is adjusted to that time. I would just make sure you are productive right from the start. Get some of your most urgent things out of the way.
I'm usually up myself at 6 but have to play chauffeur to my wife and kids. Now that school is almost out, I'm looking forward to getting an earlier start in actually working.

Days when I wake up early are the best and most productive days, and whenever I encounter discussions like this I'm reminded that I ought to wake up earlier.

Don't worry about the criticisms of others. People have a natural incentive to get you to be more like them. Ask yourself- who do you want to be like? And solicit their feedback.

Sleep wasn't really my thing when i was first starting out. I would go days without sleeping just because IM and starting a business online infatuated me.

Aside from that however, I do now get up between 6 - 7 am. I tried pushing this to waking at 5am consistently but 6am feels like a decent starting off point for the day.

Just do whatever it takes for you to succeed. For me it was lack of sleep that made a difference lol
