Key Difference Between People Who Are Making Money Online and People Who Aren't

There is one key difference between people who make money online and people who don't:

The people who actually make money online do not have a short-term mindset. There are many posts throughout the Warrior Forum, where people ask questions such as, "How quickly can I start making money with this?" and "If I put in a lot of effort immediately, how quickly can I start to see results?" Questions like this come from a "results-oriented" mindset, as opposed to a "process-oriented" mindset. This incorrect, "results-oriented" mindset is a result of marketing and the media, which constantly barrage us with images of "a new you", "instant riches", "results now", etc.

In real life, however, significant success in business does not come from short-term efforts. People who want to know how quickly they can make money in an online business are asking the wrong question. The right question that they should be asking is whether or not they are willing to commit the next 10-50 years of their life to building a real business that can generate significant wealth. Anything short of being willing to make a lifetime commitment to building a successful business is approaching things in an unrealistic manner. Chasing one business opportunity after another, and then giving up if it isn't making money after a couple of weeks or months is not what being in business is about. Most successful businesses do not turn a profit for their first two years, at the very least. It takes years and often decades to build a real, successful business.

This incorrect, short-term mindset is the equivalent of serial dieters who spend their entire lives going on crash diets for weeks at a time and then giving up after a couple of weeks of starving themselves. People who are in truly good shape have committed themselves to a lifetime and lifestyle of exercising regularly and eating healthy, not for a couple of weeks or months, but for the rest of their lives. Similarly, becoming a successful business owner requires making a lifetime commitment to building a successful business. Buying online business opportunities, reading online forums, spending the day on Facebook, YouTube, etc., is not making a commitment to being a successful business owner. Spending each and every day building a business is the only way to make this long term, lifetime commitment to building a successful business. There is no way around this inevitable truth.

There is no shortage of ways to make money online or offline for that matter. There is only a shortage of people with a long-term, process-oriented mindset, who are willing to commit their lives fully to the arduous, lifetime process of building a real business.

Being in it for the long term is definitely the way to go, but what happens if you have a bill due yesterday while building up the long term strategies?

That is something I have struggled with. It is so hard to build a sustainable business while panicking about money.

      Hi Katherine,

The answer, unfortunately, is not necessarily what most people want to hear:

You have to have a job that provides a stable source of income, while you're also building up your business in your free hours. You can't be successful in building a business and making good business decisions, while you are in a state of panic or stress about taking care of basic bills.

Here's a good video, by someone who is extremely successful, which addresses your specific concern:

That's pretty much what I was going to say. I heard something the other day that changed the way I look at a job. So I'm leaving the military and I know I'll need a source of income since my current online ventures don't make enough. So when I get a job it won't be to get a "career" but to "raise capital" for my business.

I know there's plenty of folks out there who want to grind through and not work because they want to be so focused on their business. I think it's great that you have a passion for your business and you should, but you also shouldn't struggle to pay your bills or even eat to support your vision. I've been working on my business part time and it's slowly getting there, but I'll get a job if need be to "raise capital" and pay my bills.

I've been doing online stuff for about six months now, and just in the past few months I've been making money. To be fair I just started monetizing what I had in the past 3 months and I've been making some decent money. I know it's a long process and I'm not thinking short term. My biggest concern is whether or not what I'm doing will pay off, but I have to believe it will as I've seen similar models become very successful.

When the plane is going down you put your oxygen mask on before you help someone with theirs. Your job is your oxygen mask.

I really like the advice you all are giving. You definitely have to be able to take care of your necessities before investing your time and money into any kind of business.

I agree with this. Too many people just want to quit their j-o-b's because they're lazy to get up in the morning or they hate their boss, etc. ... but they don't have anything else lined up. Even though work may seem hard, unless you have a whole bunch of money saved, you may as well stick with your day job WHILE trying to build your business. Strictly for the steady income flow.

Some people just believe that if they launch a blog, website, fanpage, affiliate marketing, etc. they will get easy and instant income The truth is that you have to put some heart into it, like in any other "normal" job, to become succesful. Nothing comes with no effort these days

This. Often the ones seeing the most success are the ones offering the most genuine service/products as well. The problem with the get rich quick mentality is there's an innate laziness and lack of overall concern that comes along with it. People want something for nothing, they want to run before they can walk, and you see those businesses come and go all the time. Especially when it comes to making money online. The whole "field" carries with it a kind of stigma of "get rich quick." People desperately jumping in, firing up another useless website, trying to pedal the same garbage that thousands are already pedaling, and expecting that they'll have any real long-term stability with it. Pipe dream, and not the way to go about doing it (or anything really).

  • That was a pretty clear story about what it takes to make a moderately wealthy business after 10 or more years of steady work.

The kind of dedication described is usually the testimony of one who has done this feat. So, in respect for what you yourself have done, I congratulate you on your achievement.

It must feel pretty good. Best regards!

I wrote a post on my website about this same thing. However, my focus on why people aren't making money online is because they're not "focused" enough. They try to dabble in too many things. I still believe that's a major cause but this post has made me realize that short-term/long term mindset is a big thing as well.

I hear alot of people that want to make money now and focus on the now, rather than put things in place to build something greater later.

    Great thread.

Agree with this - the main difference is taking action, massive action, consistently. And being flexible enough to tweak things that aren't working, until they do work.

For me personally success means following what your own gut/instinct tells you will give you success and satisfaction. For years I did what society said were the best paths to take in terms of career, making money etc but then I took the less popular path and just by following my bliss and being 'detached' (I had other sources of income) I started getting fulfilled by doing what I loved.

So true. It's astonishing that after so many years that the internet has been here.

People still think that you can just setup a website and make money overnight.

    Cheers,

That is because that is what is promised to them when they buy the "new shiny object". Then they burn out trying to get the output promised in their package.

Next thing you know, someone is on the forums saying they won't make it because they don't have the right mindset, when in reality, the mindset they have was sold to them by the very people putting them down.

You all can flame me if you want....

The reality is this....It is the person AFTER they weed through all the BS lies they have been handed with all the money making ides they bought that becomes successful.

Once they realize that it is up to them to figure it out, make mistakes, learn, and try again.....then they have the formula for success, and they can use any business model they decide is best for them.

Sadly, many give up because the promises that were made are never delivered.

I believe is a matter of balancing the short and long-term goals. We have to have long-term goals and short-term goals in between I guess the perfect plan (which is hard to balance) is to have short term goals that will be a stepping stone onto your long-term goals.
