Being a Manager and help on leadership presence

Hi Warriors,

I was hoping to strive for the Manager role at my company. Being an immigrant to the US, I think there is some gap between my potential and the perception.

I would like to see what has helped our Ws in getting into bigger/better roles early in their careers.

Also, if there is a course/book that you can think of that has helped you in showcasing your LEADERSHIP Presence - please let me know.

Appreciate any advice/help Warriors can offer.

Thank you.

What is the company that you are in? What's the market that the company you work for serves? That would help me to make a more accurate recommendation, but for general stuff I'd look at the NLP stuff, and general achievement stuff by Brian Tracy & Earle Nightingale. Tony Robbins is always good, and of course Jim Rohn is amazing.

    I hope that helps.

Now that my books are out of way let's talk about a key point.
A manager and a leader are two different things.
Being a leader will normally get you into a management position but not always.

I truly believe if you focus more on being a leader the rest will happen. You can learn the rules to be a manager but I will tell you this... I was always a so-so manager but being a natural leader made up for it.

Rather you are in charge or not people will follow you if you are a leader. You just have to know how to not step on the Manager's toes. If you take charge you do so to make him and the team look good.

I couldn't agree more with Aaron, great post!

The question to ask yourself now is do you want to manage, or do you want to lead?

Another, perhaps more important, question is this: Why are you working for a company and not working for yourself? Isn't the purpose of the Warrior Forum to unite together the misfits of society who will not conform to the societal standard that we must work for someone else? Isn't our purpose to free ourselves from the shackles of our imprisonment to our 'jobs'? What is keeping you from achieving financial freedom?

Thank you both Aaron and Weaver.

I have joined WF to be my own boss in the near future, I want to say - I have started working toward that end - working on couple sites with my friend.

In the meantime, to continue to be in US, I have to keep my visa which needs me to have a job, and my job needs me to show progress (natural stage in the corp is to be a manager).

I agree with both your comments about being a leader rather than a manager and that is what I am striving to. I dont want to be the all knowing egoistic manager, rather I wanted to embrace the fact that there are people who know more than me (like people on WF) and I wanted to collect some responses.

Hope that clarifies some of the comments!

A true leader knows that the people he leads know more then he does. Much of my success as a manager was due to the fact I never ever came in like I knew more. I absorbed all the knowledge my staff could give me.

The best managers and leaders are not the smartest people on their teams. They surround themselves with people who are better than they are.

I like and own much of John Maxwell's leadership stuff. His site is The John Maxwell Company

"Developing the Leader Within You" is a good start.

Here is a quote that I particularly like about the difference in mentality of a leader vs an employee

"When you are an individual contributor, you try to have all the answers. That’s your job…When you are a leader, your job is to have all the questions... You have to be incredible comfortable looking like the dumbest person in the room" - Jack Welch

Managing is totally different to leading and requires a different mindset and skill set.

I 'rehab' organizations and train managers to go from managing to leading and navigating thru that 'unknown territory.

Some examples of changes you'd need to consider include:

    Managing is...

    Working within boundaries

    Leading is...

    Expanding boundaries

    Managing is...

    Planning to reach goals

    Leading is...

Creating a vision of a possible future

These are just some of the 'shifts' that you'll need to take on board to be successful in any organization.
