Steve Jobs, Shaquille O'Neal and Paris Hilton, to name a few, are famous people and celebrities in their own right.

They are also known for their large egos.

Question: Does ego contribute to one's success?

Let me know of your thoughts on this.

It all depends on what kind of success you are after.

Those you mentioned, may not even consider themselves successful.

Consider someone who wants to be fully appreciated for who they really are, yet can't express themselves, as they really are.

To compensate, they build a huge empire, worth billions, yet never get the recognition they crave.

To the world, they are the model of success. However to themselves, in the dark recesses of their minds, they are utter failures.

The ego has it's own definition of success, which often times will be in contradiction to that determined by the rational mind.

Anytime you are side tracked by social status, approval, or recognition, especially if those your clearly chosen goals, you're letting your ego win.

  • This is also true when your ego drives you to be too ambitious, so that you want to prove to everybody else and your own ego what a tremendously success..

Exactly ego can be big obstacle in your success. You must give up your ego and deal with kindness so that other impressed from your behavior and your business dealing rise up. But sometimes people prefer ego more than success due to which their business just underdeveloped.

There is one nice saying about an ego by Donald Trump - Show me someone without an ego, and I'll show you a loser.

Ego is necessary part of personality and large ego can help one to succeed. People with large (but justified) ego will go through all kinds of difficulties easier, sometimes even without noticing them and that is their big plus.
But if ego is too large or not justified, it won't do any good, only harm.

Gratitude. Develop gratitude for the things you have that money cannot buy. Be thankful for having them. It's really good for the ego.

I think it all depends on how well educated is your ego.

Our ego serves a purpose, is the vehicle our Higher self, our true self uses to communicate with the exterior world.

Ego is like a teenager, immature and selfish, he feeds himself from the outside and that is the reason our ego looks and needs the recognition and approval from others, he only wants for himself.

But if we feed our ego from the inside, with love and discipline, then our ego doesn’t depend any more on the outside, on other people, our ego then becomes and expression of our true self.
