Becoming a better student/studier

Hello Self Improvement people of the internet.

I am writing to you because I recently have started reading this book about HABITS and the science of habits. It's actually a rather interesting book.

It talks about cues, "routine" execution and then reward. The author dives into how bad habits develop - like seeing your friends fries on his plate, craving a taste and grabbing some and eating it.

My question to you is that I feel that I have a bad study habit. I feel I take too many breaks - i get distracted from the internet, youtube, iphone emails etc. I dont like it all.
I wanted to know how do I replace that bad habit with a good one.

I consider myself pretty well discplined when it comes to exercise, a topic the author references a lot! I go to the gym daily even days when I feel lazy.

Anyways, are there concentration games. I thought maybe putting a timer/stopwatch and seeing if I can stay focused.

I also find that I am more focused when I am around study buddies, but they are not always available.
If you have suggestions please let me know. that's what I am here for

thanks
jsv

are you talking about studying for class work..or studying to put an im or some type of business together.

bad habits ..if you want the reason why you have study habits..how long have you been in the education system and how well have you done without good study habits ..and how much of what you studied in the past ..is remembered or used today .

humans respond to incentives ..if you do not have an incentive to study harder ..or even grasp the information the first time around without needing to study .

build an incentive structure that works for you when you study better and do better on tests because of it

punishment tends not to work that well..

and the choice here ..is do want to train yourself to do things to avoid fear of pain or punishment..or do you want to teach yourself how to reward yourself on a regular basis for doing things .

also are you putting the information into the best form for you mind to grasp it ..find the best way you absorb information and see how much of what you need to study you can convert into that form .

Lock yourself in your room. Pull the battery out of your phone. Pull out your router so you don't have any internet access, or block the websites on your computer that are distractions and force yourself to study and take notes.

You have to develop some self-discipline because that is a skill that you need to have if you want to be successful in life. I'm similar to you in the fact that I can discipline myself to workout a lot more easier than I can discipline myself to study and read sometimes.

You have to accept the fact that breaking a bad habit is not easy but you have to do whatever it takes to break that habit. Put yourself in a position where u have no choice but to sit down and study without distractions.

I deleted my facebook account ( well, disabled it for a year ) as I would spend HOURS a day wasting time making sure my profile picture looked up to date.... yeah that bad.

One thing is for sure, distractions are not going anywhere. You on the other hand are, you have the ability to tune outside noise out, so develop some personalized routines that work for you!

You can increase focus dramatically by adding in a ton of green veggies to your diet, or anything high in B vitamins.

If you have a medical condition than inhibits your brain to focus then I would recommend researching 'nootropics' STAY FAR AWAY from any focus enhancing medications, far to many long term repercussions.

As Art would say, make sure your breathing, nice BIG deep breaths to circulate all the stagnant air out of your respiratory system and in with new fresh air ( study with a window open )

Also, put yourself on a planner, study for an hour take 15 mins off to do whatever, but stay strict and follow the time regiment that you have created for yourself.

    Hope this helps

I think the best way to get things done is to block out times to do them. For example if you have something that needs to be done set the timer for 1 hour and work only on that task. When the timer stops you are done. Now you can set the timer for 10 or 15 minutes and either work on what you were already working on or stop doing that and work on something different. This way you are focused on a particular task. You might also want to shut everything down that is taking away from the task you are currently doing.
