You should never think of passion as being enough to succeed

I'm sure you have heard people say before something along the lines of "Once you find your passion, you will become successful"

That's probably one of the worst bits of advice you could follow if you're looking at using it in a business sense, I personally think it's complete nonsense.

See there's a big conflict between passion, and the ability to produce an income or results from that passion.

I remember once hearing a saying that went something along the lines of "A passionate salesperson is a brilliant salesperson BUT someone with a passion isn't necessarily good at sales".

That is an amazing saying and it's sums up pretty much what I want to talk about in this thread! I'll explain, a salesperson that's passionate about what they do and the product they are selling is usually good at it because you can see their passion shining through their sales pitch.

Whereas someone who has passion most likely isn't very good at sales, they don't have the knowledge and or experience of selling so their generally pretty bad at it

This is why people are so wrong when they say "Follow your passion and success will follow". Sure, you might enjoy what you do but you're not very likely to see any results in a business sense.

Passion + Business Skills = Success

Being passionate about what you do just means you enjoy what you do. I love what I do, I design and make things for the web and I actually make a full time income from this but I wouldn't be able to do it without having any sort of business knowledge what so ever.

If I just followed my passion without focusing on learning business and marketing, sure I might enjoy making websites for myself but it wouldn't be something that generated me an income.

By all means, do something you love with your time Warriors but remember, if you are doing it with the intention of making a business, remember to actually learn about business.

Have an awesome day!

I feel it should be "Once you find your passion to PUT IN EFFORT, you will become successful".

In other words, your passion should be "putting effort to achieve your goals".

      Hi Joe,

When you are passionate in something, you absorb the knowledge much faster, like a sponge.

You do whatever it takes, you are driven, passionate and hungry. The passion is the most important ingredient, it allows you to persevere and keep going.

And from there it leads to everything else.

        I agree. : )

It's been said that all you need is passion (which I disagree with) because it's such an influential and important component of the success process.

Passion alone will take you very far. In fact, with passion you would be more likely to complete the “boring”/tedious aspects of building a successful business.

Also, don't forget that people have different definitions of "successful". If you mean monetarily successful, then yes, you are absolutely correct. Passion is only 1/2 of the equation.

However, if they mean spiritually successful, successful at being a good person, successful at being happy, etc., then they can still be considered successful without gaining much (or any) income.

It's all a matter of how you look at it.

I also agree that sheer passion alone can never help you become successful because there is goal, skills, and wisdom in attaining success in life and don't forget also that success can differ from one person to another. It might be that success to him is having a great family, or probably more than enough resources or whatever.

Just like me, success to me is a well-balance life with faith, family, health, work and relationships with other people.

This is a false dichotomy. Translate someone's "passion" into words that mean something: "he is passionate enough to write twice as much copy in 1/3 of the time". Passion is practical if you know what it actually means, ie can verbalize in terms that the human brain understands.

I definitely feel that Joe has a good idea behind how things work and one thing that definitely sticks out to me..

It depends on what your definition of success is.

Passion is definitely something that's EXTREMELY important, but if I didn't have the marketing experience or know someone who knew how to market my ideas.. I'd probably be in a situation where it would turn pretty stressful, especially in the society we live in.

My definition of success is being able to enjoy what comes my way, rather than stressing over it.

If I want to live in a 10x10 garage with my motorcycle, so be it. I'm happy, I'm successful, I'm enjoying my life, and I'm able to afford it without stressing... EVER.

Now I don't choose to go that route, instead I downsized from the big house, garage, pool, hot tub, etc. into being a roommate of someone. The only bills I have to focus on are those that are a requirement for my situation.. and that's rent, insurance, and storage (where all of our stuff is). To me that's one hell of a success. To be able to live a better lifestyle with less.

And I'm able to do all of that whilst having my passions and a good understanding of how to market those passions.
