How to get started in the morning?

Discussion time:

Those mornings when you feel like you haven't slept at all...

how do you get yourself out of bed and get to work?

I want to hear everything, whether it's practical, mental, or just little tricks.

Here's a few tricks that I use:

1. I set my alarm clock far away from my bed.
2. My phone is out of reach (otherwise I'll waste time of FB instead of getting up).
3. Set goals to accomplish in the morning.
4. Create a routine - alarm, feet on floor, pray, shower, shave, breakfast, stretch, write, work
5. Wake up to a motivating song (until you start to hate it...)
6. Before I go to sleep, I write down something on my to-do list for tomorrow that I'm happy about. That way I'm excited when I wake up.
7. Just do it. Sometimes only pure grit gets me going.

So fellow warriors, how do you get going in the morning?

    - as soon as I get out of bed, 10 pull ups on the bar right outside my room, get's the blood flowing
    - quick walk around the block
    - glance at the to-do list and get excited about crossing things off

  • You're #6 is basically what I do, I don't write it down I just look forward to the next day. Even if I know something is going to be rough. I want to see how it will play out, and what I can learn from it. Now granted some days are not as exciting as others, but it's still better than laying in bed not doing nothing.

Get a routine and stick to it. For me it is brewing a pot of coffee, taking my meds, and heading to my computer with my first cup of coffee. I sit down and go to work.

I don't need any motivational speech or song. I look forward to logging online and seeing what awaits me including checking traffic stats and how much money we made over the night.

    Wake up
    take 10 minute walk
    take freezing cold shower
    meditate
    exercise
    eat breakfast
    read motivational stuff
    start work

Those are my rituals and I keep to it every single day.

The freezing cold shower every morning has been the best decision I've ever made. I'm on my 124th consecutive cold shower.

What are the benefits you see of taking a cold shower?

Great list OP! Staying off the internet until I get to work is crucial for beating my daily ADD.

Cold showers WAKE YOUR ASS UP, they also improve circulation to your extremities and establish a habit of overcoming emotional resistance in the morning (fear of cold).

After 3 or 4 days of cold showers, it becomes easiers to keep up the habit.

As DR Dre Once Said: Focus on the B's.

I don't have any babies but I wake up and hit the gym every day before work. Best stress reliever you can have in my opinion. Then I go to my office and do a 10 hour workday, 4 days a week - saving Friday for myself only (in which I'll solely do hobbies like brew beer, hike, wood work and so on) Weekends get diluted too much, I spend 1 day for me at the end of a work week - keeps me motivated and moving forward during the work week.

Drink a few pints of water before you retire for the night. You have to get up for a pee. You can't smack your bladder like you do the alarm clock.

No alarm, just rely on my body clock. Then do some stretching exercise, went to the bathroom, turn on my computer, check emails and updates then eat breakfast. Then return to my computer and start working.

Being a notoriously late sleeper, one of the best changes I made was changing the sound on my alarm clock from.the normal blaring alarm that Jolts you awake in a panic to a soothing ascending alarm with ocean or ambient sounds. I also try to write out the to do list the night before.

Large glass of water (32 ons) within the first hour. Got that tip from Brendon Burchard

  • I wish I could maintain a routine like that. Having a toddler at home forces you to adopt your routine to her schedule. The only thing I've been able to keep is making a tasklist the night before that I could work on the next day.

Hi Great question and great tips.

I like to have a morning routine which helps me get out of bed (and stay out of bed!).
    - Coffee and cigs (yes I'm a smoker and love my 3 mugachinos in the morning).
    - Make the bed
    - Do my morning mindset routine - which I write out each day my Gratitude Statements, My Anytime Statements; My hopes and dreams and Positive Thoughts re these dreams.
    - Wash the dishes, then have another cig!
    - Check the emails and have a look at the news online (sometimes I do this prior to my morning mindset routine; sometimes afterwards).

That's it for me - get's me going. I can always tell myself (if working from home rather than being in Sydney for my p/t day job) I can have a power nap in the arvo.

Sometimes on the weekend, I may have a wee morning nap in between mugachinos and cigs in order to get fully going for the day.

    Hope this assists.

Great ideas. I hate mornings and I have a hard time sticking to any kind of morning routine. I'll definitely try to implement some of these tips.

What I've found to work best for me is to:

    1) create my to-do list in the evening and to put the most exciting and flow-inducing task right on the top. Once my alarm goes off in the morning I have a very strong reason to get up and going!

    2) drink 3-4 coffees

    3) organize my to-do list in a way of increasing effort. I don't put my biggest tasks on top. I put smaller and easier to achieve ones. Once I get smaller ones out of the way I get into the flow and I can start conquering big ones.

    4) music is essential. Mumford and Sons + Three Days Grace.

    5) I avoid checking emails and news and all other distractions. If I start my mornings like that I will most certainly continue doing that for the rest of the day.

First thing, began by thanking God for being alive. I am a Cancer Survivor, I value life little more. Next I take approximately 5 minute resting my mind trying not to allow any thoughts to enter. Hit the Shower start my 6 a.m. workout, breakfast and I am off and running.
You should try resting your mind for 5 minute: It's almost impossible.

  • I like your list of well thought out action items that become your "plan of the day".

Because my duties vary so much, I tend to waken late but also go to sleep very late, often well into the next morning. Coffee is the stimulant of choice and goal setting is the heart of it all driven by energized action.
