The Quality of Today....Starts Yesterday....

I find that the quality / productivity of today really depends on the day before.
And it's all a choice really.

If you spend the night before watching TV till late or staying up late.

I find that the next morning tends to be unproductive.

What has worked for me is planning ahead the day before:

Planning what I should be doing the next day
Going to bed reasonably early
Not watching TV before sleep and being in the 5AM Club the next day!

How many of you are early risers? What are your morning rituals?

Here's some tips by Robin Sharma on waking up early....

#1. Don’t eat after 7pm. You will sleep more deeply as well as more sweetly. It’s the quality not the quantity of sleep that’s most important.
#2. Don’t lounge in bed after your alarm clock goes off. Jump out of bed and start your day. The more time you lie in bed after the alarm clock goes off, the greater the likelihood that the chatter of your mind will say something like “stay in bed. Sleep a bit more. You deserve it.”
#3. Get into world-class physical condition. When I am in excellent physical shape – working out 5 to 6 times a week and eating ultra-well, I jump out of bed at 5am or even 4am with ease. Being superbly fit is a brilliant move.
#4. Set BHAGs. Jim Collins coined the term “BHAGs”, meaning Big Hairy Audacious Goals. Goals breathe life and energy into your days. Goals inspire you and give you something to get out of bed for each morning. Taking out your journal and articulating 10, 5, 3 and 1 year goals for the core dimensions of your life will focus your mind and drive tremendous results. It will light a fire in your belly and flood you with passion.
#5. Set your alarm clock 30 minutes early. I shared this point at a recent The Awakening Best Self Weekend where people had come from all around the world to learn how to break through their fears and live their greatest lives. I just got an email from one participant from Spain. This little trick has changed her life. She thinks she’s getting up at 6am. By the time she’s up and out of bed, she realizes it’s only 5:30am. She uses the newfound time to meditate or read or exercise. Her business is more successful than ever. Her family life is at its best. And she’s happier than she’s been in years.

    • Solid sense commentary in your thread. I agree with what is stated but reserve the right to go off track every now and then and do nothing remotely related to IM work.

The thread reveals an often overlooked perspective of how to get out of the trap of procrastination. If we don't set ourselves up for the best possible work experience for tomorrow we are partially failing ourselves today. Well then, . . . .

I use the morning time to gather and charge myself for the tasks of the day. I enjoy morning visiting with my loving wife often before getting off to work for the day. Already I am at the "top of the mornin" part of my day and it's just beginning.

Thanks for the thread. My tip is always put the alarm far away from my bed. I have to get out of bed to turn it off. So I'm up already.

I exercise twice a day. Exercising before an afternoon session of work makes me more productive.

The thing for the last two weeks I have a new alarm clock. She is called Amelia and she wakes me up by crying as she is hungry. Getting used to a new routine feeding my baby daughter is going to take time but she is an effective alarm!

Wow exercising twice a day! Amazing!
I always believe that a good workout frees up a lot of energy. It also helps makes me sleep much more soundly at nights.

But great part on putting the alarm far away from the bed. It doesn't always work for me. I end up sleeping through the alarm at times. LOL!

Pure determination and commitment! That drives me into waking up and doing my work everyday. I am committed to my job. No matter how late I sleep the night before I will wake up early because there is a job to be done and I'm paid to do it. My sense of decency and honesty will make me do my work properly.

      I applaud your determination!
At times I can do it - but for the most bit - I need 6 hours of sleep minimum to function properly. Thus, I need to plan it right the night before to get adequate rest.

Its good that you know when are your magic hours to be productive.
Would suggest to do actual productive work during those hours and leave other "work" for other times of the day.

I have come to realize that I need to inspire myself daily to keep on track. It takes a lot of effort, but the benefits are just immeasurable.

  • I agree to what you've said the productivity starts yesterday and today you have to follow up what you've just done yesterday.
