Years ago as a young man my Mom was always wishing she would win the lottery. I told her I'd rather earn my money rather than win it. My thinking at the time was I wanted to be able to look back and say "I made it on my own".

My Mom thought I was nuts. Maybe I am as I still feel the same way. Just curious, how all of you feel. Would you rather earn it, or win it, and why.

As I've grown older I've come to realize that half the fun in making money is in the process. The people we meet, the things we learn, etc.

EARN IT OR WIN IT?

You're very wise! I'll just add that, I've rarely ever had the desire to win a lottery. It is not does not bring the happiness that most people think it does anymore than wealth does. Wise people should chase wisdom with the same enthusiasm that they chase money.

Is it sad I don't even know how to play the lottery!! I'm with you 100% I find the money making process fun. I'd rather earn it myself. You also appreciate it more and are more likely to be wise with it.

Watch this video and you will see why winning it will be the worst! The money will leave you if you haven't earned it by exchanging value!

      Personally, both.

I want to earn my own money. However, if I happened to win the lottery (or some such), I would probably consider it a bonus from the universe for working as hard as I can every day, and I would gladly accept it (or what I got to keep of it) without guilt or negative feelings. I guess I would consider it an indirect payment, of sorts. ^_^

Working hard and earning what you have is a wonderful thing, but I wouldn't pass up a good opportunity, just because it doesn't quite fit an ideal. ^_~

Also, as a side note, the sucky part about winning the lottery would be all of the people who suddenly want money from you, and having to tell them no (if you're going to tell them no). However, I would consider that payment for the awesome part: using some of the money to build my mom the small log cabin she's always dreamed of, and putting the rest into my business and/or retirement.

If winning the money meant that I could give my mom even half of what's she's given me, I would take it in less than a heartbeat! ^-^

        Good point cajtrixie.

It would be nice to buy everything I've been planning for my family. (Dad, Mum, Brothers.)

However I'll eventually be able to do that from my business. : )

If you win the money and don't have the wisdom to manage it, then you will quickly misspend the money and be broke again. But, if you already have life experience that has taught you good money management skills, then it won't matter whether or not you win the money or earn it, because you will be careful in how it's spent.

People generally tend not to value something that falls free in their lap. Definitely EARN IT!

I totally agree with you man. I would rather enjoy earning my money rather than winning it. The chances of winning a lottery ticket is like one in a millions but the chances of earning money is 100% sure thing.

I wouldn't regret winning it and I am smart enough to not lose it.

But there is a better feeling about being self made. But winning would make it easier since you would get a head start and be able to take bigger smart risks.

  • If you earn it and you'll become successful then you really get your reward because you put an effort on it.
