Are you afraid to succeed?

There's a real phenomenon known as the 'fear of success' or Jonah complex. It happens when a person is unconsciously afraid of succeeding for a variety of reasons. Some things that might cause a person to fear success are:

  • Fear of the sense of responsibility that often attends recognizing our own greatness, talents, potentials
  • Fear that an extraordinary life would be out of the ordinary, and not acceptable to friends and family
  • Fear of seeming arrogant, self-centered if they try to succeed
  • Difficulty envisioning oneself as a prominent or authoritative figure
These people might subtly sabotage their own chances of success to stay in the comfort zone, always accepting mediocrity rather than greatness.

Do you fear success? Or, do you embrace it, with all the challenges it brings?

I would like to say that I absolutely do not fear success but then why am I still struggling with IM? I have been actively working on IM for about 1 year and still have not achieved success(if we gauge success on making a living at it) It has only been recently, that I have rededicated my focus and determination to make it happen in IM. Let us not kid ourselves that many aspects of life can be distracting. It is only when we decide that we will not take "no" for an answer that we can honestly say that success is within our grasp.

Its an interesting point - and something that I do think some people suffer from. People like being "comfortable" - so, even if they moan about their day job and would love to do anything to get away from it. Quite often they subconsciously accept that they are going to be there forever and are never going to take the plunge. You have to have some element of risk - even when you achieve "success" it could easily disappear overnight. This is another fear I think...

Moving past the abstract question... yes, I unconsciously resist immense positivity and self esteem because my mind is not accustomed to that. Over time, it grows more accustomed and positivity/success feels more natural.

Fear is just another word for resistance.

Fear of failure is far more dangerous than the fear of success.

Great post Jeffrey! I was just on webinar about that last week. We discussed how most people have a fear of success that's why I believe they don't take reasonable actions - especially regarding IM. It seems most people read a WSO and if they even take action to try the system, it's only half effort. So when the systems fails they can move on to the next thing and stay in their comfort zone.

I'm at the point where I am ready to embrace it instead of fearing it. Fear of success only leads to complacency.

  • I have a very strong fear of success, I have to work at it constantly to overcome it. I really don't know why, guess it is just easier to not succeed. Failure is almost expected, but I keep moving forward and believing I'm making progress. Reading these forums helps, and a very strong positive attitude

      Guys.
I spent nearly 10 years!! fearing success, failure, you name it! basically 'Pretending' to try and not getting anywhere. (No surprise!)

But recently I was able to BREAK that procrastination cycle.
I created a simple product, and more importantly GOT IT OUT THERE!! (that was the hardest part!) and the result was: I made over $2000 in the first month!

One of the biggest 'Changes' I had to make to achieve this was to SHIFT any 'blame' or 'focus' away from me!

I was SO close to not launching it because I was so scared everyone would hate it.......and ME!

...........You can't take it personally...... It's business!!
....... So WHAT if someone doesn't like it??? does it really matter?? NO!

If you create the best product you can, giving good information people want, you'll be fine.

What matters is... if you don't do it at all... you'll be safe in your comfort zone........
      BUT!!
A: you'll never know if people like it or not,
      and
B: you'll never make any money!!

You just gotta "GET IT DONE!"

Self-confidence is more important than the attraction ? More important than ability ?

I think so. In all reality , confidence is attractive . No matter how they are your chances of becoming a model are rare if not confident enough to make contact. Consequently, be appealing and attractive model is not enough to believe in yourself is the key!

Even super successful people sometimes have a confidence problem . Here are some qoutes confidence to make you feel a little better about your situation ....

Barbara Streisand was a period of time ( after it had become a major success in music and movies ) which was absolutely terrified of going on stage. Barbara was a problem of trust. It took all the courage he could do a show back if you are not alone!

Another good example is .. ME! I used to be so shy that I could not take a group of silent prayer ! I could not talk to people, I felt inadequate in conversation ( sometimes still get these feelings) and certainly could not see any degree of success in everything you try. You know what's missing ? So ... Confidence!

Want to know how I overcame this obstacle and began to have some success in my life?

I must say that one of the main keys to overcoming my shyness was education. When I got out of the army, I decided it was time to do something in my life ( I had no idea what ) and go to college . At school, I became a psychology major with plans to teach. Later , I learned that teaching was not what I wanted to do, but psychology courses taught me some things about my shyness and confidence.

I don't fear success but I have a friend that does. It is so bad that he is stuck in a waiter job living at home at the age of 37 and has no plans of changing anything. It is really sad to watch and I don't know what to do. I do believe this is a big problem though and it is very hard to watch this kind of thing happening.

I guess like you said its the fear of responsibility. As long as you are not successful you don't have to take on new responsibilities are take on new things.

see many think this in B*S*...but it's something that does come into play.

I've seen it time and time again....people set up..make money...then stop....They get comfortable and stop striving.
