Scott Adams' (Dilbert) Secret of Success: Failure

For most people, it's easy to be passionate about things that are working out, and that distorts our impression of the importance of passion.
But objectively, my passion level moved with my success. Success caused passion more than passion caused success.
Observers call him lucky. What I see is a man who accurately identified his skill set and chose a system that vastly increased his odds of getting "lucky."
I could quote about 1/3 of the article. It's that good!

The author of Dilbert gives some reality to the ideas of what it takes to be "successful."

    I love this so much!

It really bothers me when people say for someone: "he is extremely lucky to get rich/get that job/buy that car etc." when I know how hard that person worked over the years to get into that position where everything seems to work in his favor!

But we don't do that all the time. We don't say:"how lucky is the chef for making this wonderful and delicious dish". On the other hand when someone makes $100,000 in 4 days we would say that he's lucky (even though that person worked for years beforehand without making any money whatsoever).

We need to go often to the "well of water" that we want to drink. Is it not true that many of us continue to drink from the same "well of water" that we are used to and expect a different taste and reaction to our thirst. We must go ,often, to places that will help us reinforce our new dedication and desires and not to the same old places where we have hung out in the past.
I hope that this is not to symbolic to help us learn and grow and move to the next level.

    • I'd have to say that this quote is my favorite:

If you drill down on any success story, you always discover that luck was a huge part of it. You can't control luck, but you can move from a game with bad odds to one with better odds. You can make it easier for luck to find you. The most useful thing you can do is stay in the game.

    Great stuff, thanks for sharing.

I wasn't the biggest Dilbert fan, but everything else that I find from this guy seems to show that some serious brilliance. Highly recommend his God's Debris as well.

We all do. We try something once we decided that we failed in that and then just give and we tried again. Sometimes we do a little better than that and try again. But we continue to get the same result. What we do and why we can not go beyond the point of failure?

Sometimes it is not enough to simply try harder, sometimes your entire strategy has to change. That's why it's very important to know why something failed and I don't just mean knowing your stats it's much more than that.
