Should I read Think and Grow Rich

Hey Warriors what's up?!

I'm very interested in self-improvement and I read almost 400 books on the topic up until now. However I didn't read the classical recommendation everyone makes: Read "Think and Grow Rich" and "How to Win Friends".

They are written many many years ago and most of the blogs and books just recycled those ideas over and over again. That's why when I decided to finally read the book, I stopped after only 50 pages - I knew almost everything he was talking about.

Also I didn't like the "tone" the book has been written in. I don't like this whole law of attraction thing and this book reminded me highly (on some deep level) of "The secret".

With that said, I see that many of you here have read the book (many of you multiple times) and I wanna ask you if I'm wrong? Tell me your experience with the book and tell me why my attitude towards it is wrong?!

Thank you very so much!

Well, still it depends on you if you think the book helps your self-improvement the finish reading it but if you find it uninteresting then stop wasting your gold.

Reading self-improvement books alone is not what will make you successful. Yes, think and grow Rich is a classic and contains a lot of helpful tips to take your life to the next level.

But honestly, the only thing you need is a clear vision of what you want to achieve, some kind of plan on how to get there even if it isn't perfect, and relentless, persistent action until you achieve that objective.

If you do that every day, doesn't matter what books you do read or don't read, you'll have more success

This, my friend are exactly my thoughts too. No use reading thousands of books be it self-improvement or others, if you don't use the knowledge or put into practice what you read. You will suffer from mental indigestion.

Imagine, if we all keep on eating and don't eliminate everyday, how will we feel?

I am not saying that you should not read inspiring books, please don't get me wrong, but take action on what you read. Apply the knowledge. Teach young ones, and share freely.

      Hope this helps.
      Regards,
      Isa.

It's a good read, but I've spent far too long reading self-improvement and personal development books. I spend all my time thinking "Things will be good if I think positive", and "What I think about will come about." and "Visualise what you want."

I'm reading Larry Winget's books at the moment, he's known as the "Pitbull of personal development", and he says "It's what you think about, talk about and actually DO something about that comes about"

I have recently started reading his book "shut up, stop whining and grow a pair", it's really good and more about making you uncomfortable so you take action and do things.

Again this means I'm still reading rather and actually taking action but I
definitely think it gives you a refreshing view to personal development.

You read 400 books on the topic but couldn't get further than 50 pages with "Think and grow rich" or "How to win friends and influence people"? That is mind boggling for me.

I read a lot of books before getting to these classics but I found them to be extremely powerful and to-the-point. Definitely worth the read. I actually read "How to win friends.." twice in a row because I found it so compelling and logical.

  • If the topic of "Think and grow rich" or "How to win friends and influence people" has the same content and they only edited you can also try some topic that are different from those two but related to becoming successful and how to gather more friends may be you can find different opinions and suggestions to what you have read before.

    no .

most self improvement book are written to increase the value the writer gets when they speak or do a seminar.

first rule of becoming really successful is to stop doing what is not working .

If you are not learning anything from reading self improvement books use that time to study something else ..or maybe go for a walk learn a new instrument ..listen to lots of relaxing music ..learn to cook different tasty foods ..build house from cob . plant a garden.. study about gardening while preparing soil .

save the money you would spen on the books in a year take a trip to a developing country and get a half dozen nice suits made for low money .

You leave a lot of people confused with your post. Maybe it will be easier if you explained your purpose of what you intended to accomplish by reading 400 self-improvement books.

For me, I have developed the habit of reading self improvement books and articles because I've realized that true success starts within and I need to keep my mind focused on success. I was 37 when I started out in Internet Marketing. I was broke, homeless, and in the process of a divorce from my wife. I was a mess and I thought IM was a quck way to make some fast cash.

      Boy was I wrong!

After years of struggling online, I finally realized that making money online had nothing to do with money, but who I was as a person. I underwent a complete transformation because I realized that I was the reason I was in my dire position and I was the only one who could get me out of it.I was my own worst enemy.

I changed my thinking from negative to positive, I dropped the people who spoke negativity around me and were not going anywhere in life and surrounded myself with rich and successful people. I started thinking like them and acting like them.

All of this came as a result of reading those books and articles. It is a necessary habit because I had to recreate my mind and thinking from being a failure to being an achiever. I now have a purpose, a calling to help others reach their full potential because they deserve nothing less.

If you don't agree, that's perfectly OK, my message is not for you. My purpose is to "attract" those who think like I do because no one's thoughts are truly unique. I surround myself with those who want better out of life and are willing to TAKE ACTION NOW and do what it takes to make their dreams a reality. That's who my message is for and I make money online now because people see that I am honest, transparent, and passionate about my message and are willing to support me in my efforts to change lives.

I learned all of this from those books and the granddaddy of them all, THINK AND GROW RICH. It's worth the read because the principles you've read about in your books are nothing new, in fact they are all in Hill's book, which lets you know that the principles taught are timeless.

My question to you is a simple one. After reading four hundred books, you have a lot of knowledge. When are you going to put that knowledge to use by TAKING ACTION?

First of all, I love to read and I read very fast so reading all those books wasn't a big problem for me.

Second, you are right! For the past 6 or so months I've read only ~50 books. Most of my time was focused on action, action and action. Back in the day I didn't do that and instead I just read and read. I didn't apply anything and as a result my life was the same. I had so much knowledge and I could transform your life in a couple of hours but when it came to my life, it was absolutely the same as before I started reading.

But I figured it out now and my life is rapidly changing for the better.

Well this thread has been very enlightening of the state of mind of many Warriors.

I'll bet if we totaled the income of everyone else besides fenway who posted prior, it wouldn't be a large sum.

People who are poor never 'get' the law of attraction. It just doesn't exist or work for them. They find all kinds of reasons why it doesn't work.

Generally speaking, they are not getting off their duffs and creating situations where opportunity can find them. You are not going to succeed sitting on the couch or in bed. You are not going to succeed wishing things would come to you--and TAGR is quite clear about that. Chapters are devoted to the making of a solid PLAN, and putting that plan into ACTION!

Consider that most people who buy a product never put it into action. Same thing with TAGR. You can have a book, even read it...but what do you DO with the knowledge it gives you?

For me, TAGR was the first real self-help book I read. Went and bought it for buck or two at a local used book store back in North Vancouver when I was 22 or 23. Read it over and over. Used the 'brief' idea to get companies to create well-paying jobs for me that didn't exist before--and with no competition from others. Gave that copy away. Have continued to read and apply the principles year after year. Often read the pdf version now, though I should go and buy a new paperback copy.

You get what you put into it. People just don't get that. They're looking for a magic pill or someone to do it for them. This thread is overflowing with proof of that point of view.

If you only got through 50 pages of Think and Grow Rich, you are missing the best parts of creating an action plan to "grow rich."

I received this book as a gift at 18 years old. It was my very first personal development book ever.

I am now 43 years old. Over those years I have taken this book out and re-read it about 18 times. On my 12th read, I finally GOT IT...the action planning section was telling me to ACTUALLY create an action plan for myself, as well as a self-evaluation. This took me hours to complete, but I finally did it.

Every time I have gone back to the book and re-read it, I got something different out of it...I learned something new.

When you read / learn ... then do ... then go back and read / learn ... you take something different from the reading / learning.

This is a very effective cycle of application. It is in every effective business plan that has been created. You first have to create your plan, then:

      Read it
      Do it
      Review it
      Revise it

      Then...

      Read it
      Do it
      Review it
      Revise it

Usually every 1-3 months. The revisions are identifying what is not working and what is working.

There is a reason that most homes that are over $350K usually have a library in them...

Think and Grow Rich is more of a manual than a book and the more you read it, the more 'aha' moments you will get. Thanks for pointing that out Coachkat

Napoleon Hill co-authored "Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude" with entrepreneur/billionaire W. Clement Stone.

The great thing about Success Through a PMA is that you get the lessons taught in Think & Grow Rich along with success lessons from Stone, who started from poverty and became a billionaire.

By all means read it. For whatever it is worth, they can provide you with some insights on how people of success think and do things. But at the end of the day, you still must act on your instincts to succeed. You cannot and could never copy what others did to make it. You have to write your own story and be the producer, the director and the player rolled into one.

Try to complete the book and look past the "tone" and into the core message of the book. I encourage you to revisit the Law of Attraction concept and explore it in more depth, because it does work.

If you can't get past the tone of Think and Grow Rich then try out The Success Principles by Jack Canfield. It's a great read with a lot of good stuff in it. Sure, some of the stuff in all of the personal development books seems to be re-hashed from other books in our past, but I've found that I need a reminder every now and then of something I already know but am not practicing.

I think TAGR is a must read for anyone on a journey of personal development and growth. Sure the book was researched and written nearly a century ago, but the principles are timeless.

I think it's more than just a book to be read once and put on a shelf though, and is the kind of work that needs to be studied and applied in more and more detail each time. Just look at Bob Proctor who credits this book for his extraordinary life, and he's been carrying it around with him and studying and reading it over and over for 40+ years!

It's great that you've read 400 books, and that's all the more reason to include those 2 classics in my opinion. Feed your mind just like you feed your stomach.

Hard to believe you have read 400 books in the field and *not* read this one! The reason you felt you knew it all was because so many others books have been influenced by it! Blimey, even my own motivation book was influenced by that one, and others.

Give it another go, if you have a desire to really get in the field, and 400 books says you do, then you need to finish it to have an understanding of why people rave about it - imagine the other 400 books weren't there - they weren't at the time!

The driving concept of attitude changing thoughts, thoughts changing actions, actions changing results is massively powerful.

    Cheers,

I have read the book many times over and I also get on a call what discusses this book and a few others. I noticed you said you already know what they are talking about. When someone says they already know it that is a deadly thing to say. If you don't have the results to show that you already know it then you don't know it. I am not trying to sound like a jerk here but it is the truth. I don't know what your results are or if you are happy with them. Its just something I learned and that is never say you already know it especially when you don't have the results to show for it.

You know reading these books are "cool" and all. But ultimately it doesn't matter if you don't even apply it. My dad for example, has read so many motivational books. Books to become rich etc. Although he read them, he never became that "millionaire" type of man that he wanted to be because he was afraid.

Ultimately it's up to YOU. Are you going to apply it? Or are you going to read the book and counter it all the time and say "that's not me, I can't do that, no that's not possible" and be negative about it 24/7.
