How Do You Know When To Take Action?

So you know about the 80/20 rule and how it applies to many things in business and life. We can put a ratio on many things.

So my question is, what ratio would you give time spent to learning and working?

I've heard many people lecture about how we should always take action, and taking action is better than sitting around and reading internet marketing forums all day.

But how do you know when is the right time to take action? Because shouldn't you at least know the basics before jumping right in and working?

What would be an optimal ratio of time spent reading and working for the best success rate? Should it be 20% learning about IM and 80% taking action? Or should it be 50/50 learning and taking action?

Should there even be an optimal ratio for success, or does it really depend on the type of person?

Thoughts?

    Hi Gracie2339,

There is no right time to take action. Sad but true, the only way to accomplish anything else is to fail, pick yourself up and go again. Understand that you are going to fail. Basically what that does is that it takes the pressure of you so you can just take action. You will never know everything the first time, that is a fact of life.

Like Jason said, there is no right time, the learning is really in the action, and if it doesnt work you learn from it and move forward.

I've spent years learning stuff, reading, watching videos but its so much more comfortable learning because there's no risk.

I tend to pick things up as I go, If I get stuck I either outsource it or learn how to do it and keep going. I used to use learning as an excuse to put off taking action.

The US Marines talk about making a decision with 70% of the information you could possibly gather, maybe less. Making a decision and moving forward is almost always more powerful--even if it is the wrong choice--than doing nothing at all.

You can never get 100% of the possible information. You will always have to move with incomplete knowledge. That's fine. All leaders must do this.

Obviously make your risk in accordance with your resources. Don't be the farm on an "unsure thing". If you have NO income, you need a job. Do this part time.

When you feel you know something well enough to move forward, implement. Make it 50% or 70% as good as you could, but get something up there...you can always make it prettier or function better later. My first WSOs were ugly. So what. They sold, and people loved the content. I made them prettier later.

Action - any action - always beats sitting around thinking about it or reading about how to do it.

You can always adjust if, as you will occasionally do, you make a poor action decision and end up a bit off course.

However a small percentage of time, say 10%, devoted to structured related study is vital. Invest in it!

The time is right now. It's not like you are going to stop learning and then begin taking action. You just learn to ask different questions after you have some experience. And then modify your actions. Then ask more questions and on it goes.

The short hand version is that if you are asking this question, you are probably ready to begin.

    Today. Tomorrow. Every day.

That's when you should be taking action. Sure, learning is important but doing something that will bring you results is more important.

When I was limited to time, I would spend all my free time learning about the field I wanted to get into. Looking back, I could of been successful much earlier on.

I think learning can be a form of procrastination in itself. It's too easy to say, I'm taking action, I read some things in a book today! Go me....

That does sound impressive when you read it but not so much when you think of the person who made their first sale by picking up the phone and taking action.

Use your free time, to go take action. Get that website up, put yourself in front of potential clients and go make sales!

Instead of watching the news first thing in the morning, read or listen to a podcast. Read a book while on your way to work/school.

Focus on learning during the time where you can't work and spend the rest of your time taking action as it's, doing something that's going to get you results!

My 2 cents on the topic.

I chose entrepreneurship over further education despite being laughed at by my friends and family..

I recently hit the "RESTART" button on my life, read my personal blog to find out how I did it :)

    I don't care about any 80/20 rule.......

    All i know is that....

It's only by taking action that i get to see the proceeds of my handwork.

Action should take a bigger part of your business life cycle.

I also understand that knowledge is power therefore, always give a reasonable amount of time to learning or hanging out on where you get to acquire this power from, from time to time..

While if you are starting out, you are going to spend more of your time learning, making errors, experimenting and trying to find your way to the top and know what works.
In this case, you are not qualify for the 80/20 rule otherwise you will be working for nothing..

Don't let the rule confuse you, get your acts together first and use your common sense.

When you are running a business always create room for learning, experimenting and expansion.
This should come as it necessitate not a die hard rule that you must follow...

Hey guys!! Like 'Robert Kiyosaki' - "Rich dad poor dad" says, you should love to fail, and fail often because thats how you learn. Once you learn you make improvements, yes learning is a key part in this field but take action early so that you progress and learn from your mistakes.

Always take action. You will never know if the theory is right or wrong if you don't take action.
You are unique and if something doesn't work for 99% of people you could be an exception. So...action.
