Is coffee good or bad for you?

Hey guys,

I've been hearing some health gurus say that coffee is garbage and does nothing good. But other health gurus say that it's rich in antioxidants and good for your body.

So which is correct? What are the pros and cons of drinking coffee? I'm a coffee lover, so I hope it's a healthy drink.

Thanks,
Michael

Coffee reduces the risks of liver cancer, Parkinson's and heart disease, but at the same time it will erode your calcium if you drink in excess. Fortunately for you but sadly for me, it's the women at higher risk for calcium loss in that event.

2-3 cups of coffee a day + calcium tablet if you're worried

Something I know about...Like anything else, coffee has positive and negative characteristics, and like anything else, individuals have wildly varying reactions to caffiene. My wife can't drink more than 6 cups a day or she will have a severe reaction, raise in BP, and lower stress tolerance, I drink upwards of 2 pots a day and only have slightly elevated bp in the middle of the afternoon. We both drink our coffee dilute, her with creamer and artificial sweetener, me with sugar and milk. To cut down on caffiene and increase or perserve the taste, try switching to a darker roast, and as was said above, remember all things in moderation, my wife and I both drink too much java, but 2 or 3 cups in a day, especially a half-caf, decaf, or dark roast(Folgers makes a blend called "Black Silk" which probably has less caffiene in two cups than one can of Mountain Dew) certainly won't kill you.

            hi,

make sure that your artificial sweetener isn't Aspartame.

seriously you need to kick this as it is used in all or most diet products.

the fda banned its use until in 84 there was a change when a certain person linked to presidents (i won't name him here) became head of the fda.

immediately it was put into the public use and declared - good to use.

i won't go into a really big rant but please google it and check it out.

I agree!! Aspartame is nasty, horrible stuff. I've got a medical condition where my body doesn't break down phenylalanine and Aspartame is like poison to me (proverbially speaking). Its one thing I'm actually scared of, and not without good reason - it makes me feel really, really ill within less than half an hour. However, having done some reasearch into Aspartame it turns out that it's like poison to everyone else too! My family and husband have stopped having anything with Aspartame in it and they feel a lot better for it. When you google it, or even Aspartame Poisoning, some of the stuff that comes up is terrifying. Makes me thankful I can't have it, even if it does mean I have to read the label of pretty much everything I buy when I do the groceries!

On the coffee note, I think anything (within reason obviously) is fine in moderation. Personally I drink 1 - 2 cups of coffee a day and never any more. Sometimes I won't drink any for months on end. I also go through phases where I drink a lot of herbal teas. I've noticed I am drinking coffee more regularly at the moment as I'm trying to lose weight and am thus trying very hard to kick my coca cola habit!

I have seen coffee produce miracles. I once took a telemarketing room from 11k to 20k per day and I think alot of it was do to making the coffee twice as strong. People were just wired for sound!

Depok Chopra speaks of a tribe of "centenarians' in Africa who can live to be 150 years old and the most common denominator among them is heavy dark coffee usage...

I've heard good and bad things about coffee. Seems to me that the people who drink at least one cup a day know all of the "good" statistics, about antioxidants, how it really doesn't dehydrate you as much as they say, etc.

But for me personally, coffee is bad for me. It makes me jittery, it messes up my sleep cycle, and I crash hours later. And this is not something I'm going to try to build up immunity to to prove that it doesn't have those strong effects.

I agree! I drink green and black tea for the antioxidants! And every once in a while, coffee - as it does make me hyper in a sense and truly messes with my sleep if I drink too much of it.

I love the smell of freshly brewed coffee though! Drink it in moderation and drink organic!

coffee contains caffiene which is nicotines cousin.

it attacks the nerves and brain.

also there is too much salt in caffiene believe it or not so anyone with high blood pressure cut the coffee out!

on a different note tea is considered healthier however, it has an amazing amount of Fluoride in it which on top of using mouth wash, tooth paste and water which all contain fluoride it is better to cut down on tea as well.

doesn't leave you much to drink - sorry!

Really? Back in my school days chemistry was one of my favorite subjects. While caffeine and nicotine have chemical formulas that may look similar (caffeine = C8H10N4O2, nicotine = C10H14N2), their chemical structures bear almost no resemblance to each other. They also don't bind to the same receptors in the nervous system, although they do both increase the level of dopamine (as do most addictive drugs).

Nicotine binds to the brain's acetylcholine receptors, while caffeine binds to the adenosine receptors.

I'd hardly call them cousins any more than I'd call cocaine and methamphetamine cousins knowing that they're entirely different chemicals that work in different ways aside from the dopamine effect. (note that this isn't an endorsement for cocaine, methamphetamine or any other illegal drug.. I simply used those as examples because "on the surface" their effects seem similar even though in reality they're completely different).

it attacks the nerves and brain.
It causes chemical changes in the brain, but so does almost any other drug (and many other things we put into our bodies every day that we don't consider to be a drug, including most foods and even the air we breathe). I've never seen any evidence that it "attacks" the nerves and brain, though.

also there is too much salt in caffiene believe it or not so anyone with high blood pressure cut the coffee out!
      Caffeine = C8H10N4O2 = 8 carbon, 10 hydrogen, 4 nitrogen, 2 oxygen
      Salt = NaCl = 1 sodium, 1 chlorine

Caffeine contains no sodium or chlorine, so (alchemy aside) it couldn't possibly contain salt.. but it does raise the blood pressure by binding the brain's adenosine receptors, constricting blood vessels and causing the heart to pump harder and faster.

Now with that out of the way (sorry, I'm a "nerd" at heart and don't like to see misinformation about scientific facts go uncorrected.. lol), to go back to the OP's question. Too much caffeine is bad for you, that's a given, people have known that for as long as we've known how it works in the body (and probably longer than that). That being said, there is some evidence that if you're healthy (no heart/blood pressure problems), coffee or tea can be good for you in moderation. It's also true that everybody reacts to caffeine differently. I know people who can drink a cup of coffee and be "spun" all day. I can drink 3 cups of coffee before bed and have no trouble falling asleep.

coffee (caffiene) has been known for years to be a cousin of nicotine.

also - check your label on your next jar of coffee and check out the salt and sodium content.

adding salt to stave away bitterness has been an old trick way back from sailors and fishermen alike.

        just check it out.....

        This....

People react differently to most things, coffee is a stimulant though, like any drug there are usually natural ways to get the same benefit you are after.

Xylitol is the best sweetener from my research and is what I use now.

Milk is another story though, read up on the health risks of milk meant for calfs with 50+ hormones, there are strong growth hormones in milk too which are meant for the calfs not humans.

That is the most informative summary of caffeine V nicotine I have ever read!

I do not believe in good or bad anything.... moderation, perception and compromisation are my key elements!

If traces of cyanide (usually poisonous) can be found in apple seeds, this must be true! (aso found in mango seeds and some other seeds, but many people eat apple pips!)

I personally quit smoking 8.5 weeks ago, and my coffee intake has been reduced to under 10%. I think I am now at a moderate level for both (I think cigarettes should be had in moderation, moderate it so your last smoke is your last smoke!)

I read that acidic foods, including coffee, require calcium for our bods to process.

If you ingest a lot of acidic foods the bod leaches calcium from your skeleton.
Which can lead to major issues especially for women.

    Moderation is the key.

I love java but, causes muscle cramps so, I avoid it.

        Hi Michael,

I had a cafe business for 8 years. The key is moderation. Anything that you over indulge like food, alcohol and coffee can go from being good to bad if you abuse it. I personally love expresso because it's short, strong and gets straight to the point. If you drink coffee brew it yourself and make a good strong cup so you don't need 3-4 cups daily.

It would be pretty hypocritical of me to judge anybody for drinking coffee when I spend most nights pubbing or clubbing with my liver taking a battering.

I think people overreact to all these health studies. It's basically just percentages and statistics. Who really cares? There's a risk attached to crossing the road if you're going to be super pedantic.

      hi finch,

i understand what you saying and moderation in everything is fine.

the point is some supposedly harmless substances that we take for granted diet products, artificial sweeteners, drinking water has some or part chemicals in that we are not aware of the consequences health wise and spiritually what these chemicals do to dumb us down and stop us evolving and gaining enlightenment.

Coffee is, I believe, NOT very healthful (though there are studies
which suggest some benefits). However, despite being a dedicated
healthy-diet person I still drink coffee, and love the experience but
    sometimes regret the effects.

If it were just me I wouldn't have it around, but my girlfriend buys
it and we make it sometimes. I prefer Yerba Mate, a S. American
tea you may want to research and/or try out as an alternative to
    coffee.

For a while some years ago I drank cold-brewed coffee which does
not have the acidity issues of hot-brewed coffee. The taste is
also slightly different. You make a extract, super-concentrated,
and when you want a cup you mix an ounce or so of concentrate
with hot or cold water to make your coffee. You can refrigerate
the concentrate and it keeps well - but it doesn't have the same
kick-of-fresh-brewed-coffee you get when you grind the beans
and brew them hot right on the spot.

All told, caffeine weakens the kidneys and should be taken in
    moderation if at all.

As a couple of people have already mentioned, the key really is moderation. Personally coffee does me no good. After more than one cup I start feeling itchy and irritated, caffeine is a drug just like any other.

One important to thing to consider whenever you read or hear a report (be it scientific or editorial) is "who's funding this?". Not to get too in depth but if a magazine is owned by the parent company of Nescafe for example, then it's probably going to claim coffee is nothing but good.

      Follow the money.

    Hi Michael,

I enjoy 3 cups a day, and haven't had any problems so far!

Some doctors say it good, some deny it totally. So the best way, is to rely on what your body tells you!

Here's a coffee joke to cheer you
    out.

One day a patient goes to the Doctor for a general check up.

After completing the check up, the wise Doctor says:

Son, it seems you're a smoker; by the way, do you drink coffee as well!

Yes of course, the patient answers.

Doctor: Son, do you know that you're heading to a slow death!

Patient: Doc, I'm not hurrying at all

Coffee is the nectar of the gods!

Just like most things we consume, it can be a problem if you drink too much.

If you believe coffee is bad for you, then it is.

I find drinking a cup of coffee to be the perfect morning ritual.

yeah moderation is the most important word, or as I like to refer to it "Balance"

Everything in life should have balance. Too much of anything, by definition is too much!

I used to drink alot of coffee and have cut myself down to only drinking one cup a day or two a day on the days I need to be social (ie with clients) not because I need the extra cup, usually just because I will be offered and might be in a social environment like a coffee shop where I am likely to say yes.

How ironic for me to come across this post. Before yesterday, I rarely ever drank coffee at all. But for the last two days now, I've been drinking coffee like a fanatic because of the caffeine rush, lol..

At first it was because I came across some flavors I've never heard of like "Antigua" or "Peruvian Organic" and so I bought some little packages and drank them just to see how they tasted compared to other popular brands like Folgers or Maxwell House. Now I'm drinking for the caffeine rush and not so much for the flavor, lol. (I've drank 4 pots today by myself, rofl)

So anyway, interesting topic and nice resources provided by people that replied.

(PS. I like the Peruvian Organic better than the Antigua. The Antigua is still pretty good, though.)

    Hi Michael
The pros and cons of drinking coffee, let me think the pros are it keeps me awake long enough to get some things that I should or should not be doing doneFor the day.

Caffeine is a stimulant and they can help burn fat.

The cons of drinking coffee is that it darkens your teeth.

i was a professional body builder for 10 years and used coffee and tea to use the loo prior to competitions.

it doesn't always make you "poop" as it dehydrates you so most people i knew had to take other supplements.

the point i make is that most people don't know what is in coffee and tea.

with coffee sodium (salt) is added to take away the bitterness - check your labels so if you want to reduce stress or high blood pressure cut down on the coffee.

also caffeine contained can be addictive and hard to come off - any coffee drinker would normally find it difficult to cut down or stop all together.

with tea there are high traces of fluoride and without going into details the effects on the brain and how if anyone wants to become creative or spiritual should stay away from these types of products or seriously cut down.

we already take fluoride in through dental products and our municiple drinking water.

there are reasons that our governments attack us with basically poisons and try to pass them on as a need for our health - i.e. dental and others.

but see through them and reduce intake.

please google caffeine and fluoride to find out more

so to get on track with the originals OP - yes too much coffee is bad for you IMO

Being a heavy coffee drinker I have always tried to find the definitive answer towards the "is cofee good or bad for you" question. Ultimately the answer is the same as with milk: Nobody REALLY knows, and the more you read and research, the less sure and more confused you get.

A lot of people have very heavy beliefs one way or the other. I know I've seen reports of serious studies that conclude both good and bad things for coffee... from the usual acidic/dehydration/calcium-leeching stuff to stuff that says coffee enhances workout intensity, protects against cavities and reduces the risk of heart disease.

No matter which way you want to lean you'll find way more than enough evidence to support either 'good' or 'bad' claims... So in the end it's all down to your own responsibility of consuming it or not. I can tell you my own productivity is 200% when I have a good cup of coffee in me, I'm more creative, think faster, and can deal with problems more confidently. That is worth it to me.

Here`s list of pros & cons:-

      The "Pros"

1-Antioxidants. Coffee is loaded with antioxidants like chlorogenic acid and melanoidins. Antioxidants help prevent oxidation, a process that causes damage to cells and contributes to aging. Melanoidins from roasted coffee have antioxidative effects depending on the way the coffee is treated.

2-Parkinson's disease. Regular coffee consumption reduces the risk of Parkinson's disease. A number of studies have demonstrated that people who drink coffee on a regular basis are significantly less likely to develop Parkinson's disease.

3-Diabetes. Coffee consumption is potentially protective against the development of type 2 diabetes. A prospective cohort study as part of the US Nurses Health Study found that moderate consumption of both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee may lower the risk of type 2 diabetes in younger and middle aged women.

4-Liver cirrhosis. Coffee drinking may protect against liver cirrhosis, especially alcoholic cirrhosis.

5-Gallstones. There is some evidence that coffee drinking may be protective against gallstone formation in both men and women.

6-Kidney stones. Coffee consumption lowers the risk of kidney stones formation. Coffee increases the urine volume, preventing the crystallization of calcium oxalate, the most common component of kidney stones.

7-Improved mental performance. Caffeine in coffee is a well-known stimulant. Coffee promotes alertness, attention and wakefulness. The cup of coffee can also increase information processing.

8-Alzheimer's disease. Regular coffee consumption seems to protect against Alzheimer's disease. Recent mouse study showed that caffeine equivalent to 5 cups of coffee per day reduced the build up of destructive plaques in the brain.

9-Asthma. Caffeine in coffee is related to theophylline, an old asthma medication. Caffeine can open airways and improve asthma symptoms.

10-Caffeine safety. In 1958, caffeine was placed on the Food and Drug Administration's list as generally recognized as safe (GRAS).

      The "Cons"

1-Heart disease. The relation between coffee consumption and risk of cardiovascular disease has been examined in many studies, but the results remain controversial. Most prospective cohort studies have not found coffee consumption to be associated with significantly increased cardiovascular disease risk.

On one hand, diterpenes cafestol and kahweol present in unfiltered coffee and caffeine each appear to increase risk of coronary heart disease. High quality studies have confirmed the cholesterol-raising effect of diterpenes. Coffee consumption is also associated with an increase of plasma homocysteine, a risk factor for coronary heart disease.

On the other hand, a lower risk of heart disease among moderate coffee drinkers might be due to antioxidants found in coffee.Besides that, caffeine can increase the risk of heart attack, especially among those people who carry the "slow" gene variant for the enzyme that metabolizes caffeine.

2-Cholesterol. Heavy consumption of boiled coffee elevates blood total and LDL cholesterol ("bad cholesterol") levels. Unfiltered coffee contains two cholesterol-raising compounds cafestol and kahweol.

3-Blood vessels. Coffee negatively affects the blood vessel tone and function (increases arterial stiffness and wave reflections).

4-Heart rhythm disturbances. Coffee can cause rapid or irregular heartbeats (cardiac arrhythmias).

5-Blood pressure. Although coffee consumption is not a significant risk factor for hypertension, it produces unfavorable effects on blood pressure and people prone to hypertension may be more susceptible. Recent Italian study found that coffee drinking can slightly increase the risk for development of sustained hypertension in persons with elevated blood pressure.

6-Osteoporosis. Coffee intake may induce an extra urinary excretion of calcium. Heavy coffee consumption (4 cups=600 ml or more) can modestly increase the risk of osteoporosis, especially in women with a low calcium intake.

7-Heartburn. A cup of coffee can trigger heartburn

8-Sleep. Most of us are aware of the stimulatory effects of caffeine. High amounts of caffeine taken before going to sleep, can cause restlessness and difficulty falling asleep, tendency to be awakened more readily by sudden noises, and a decreased quality of sleep. However, some people can drink coffee and fall right asleep.
9-Dehydration. The caffeine in coffee is a mild diuretic and can increase urine excretion. This effect may be easily neutralized by drinking an extra glass of water.

10-Dependence. Caffeine is a drug, a mild central nervous system stimulant, and it produces dependence. Caffeine withdrawal is a real syndrome. You may get a few days of headache and irritability if you choose to quit drinking coffee, however, it is relatively easy to break this habit, and most people are not addicted to caffeine

You can find many other sources on web.

Coffee is bad for you if you drink 6-7 cups a day. I have one cup of coffee a day and that's it. Also, It depends on how old you are. If you are in this business and do a lot of sitting that is also bad for you.

Some Doctors suggest that black pepper and to much coffee will irritate your Prostate. When you add that to sitting in front of the computer to much that is what I would call the double whammy.

I hate the saying "everything in moderation". So its ok to moderately poison ourselves? A little WILL hurt. You may not see the repercussions now but you most very likely will in the future. This could be in the form of excessive tiredness and not being able to really function (which is most people these days) or something like cancer.

Why is it "not living" by avoiding these things?

I cut out caffeine and my moods are much more level, I don't get irritated anymore and I am happier. That IS living to me.

You can enjoy your food without resorting to junk. Stop putting junk on a pedalstal - see it for what it really is....and you will live a much healthier life.

Of course there are going to be studies showing how great coffee is...because it is something a lot of people love and it is addictive. That isn't healthy..but we will make an excuses or find anything for the things you love. J

Also just because something contains something doesn't mean that it is healthy for us and even if it does contain just that one thing that is considered good for us - there are a million other reasons why it isn't healthy. We focus on the ONE thing that makes it seem ok, so we can continue our addiction to them.

Rather than work off various opinions, the secret is to test oneself for coffee and how much one requires a day. One great way to test oneself is by muscle testing and it is very easy to do this with some practice and a good teacher.

Coffee works by stimulating the body to increase glucose production, so it increases brain glucose levels and makes one feel better if one's blood and brain glucose levels are too low.

When one uses muscle testing, one can easily get the dosage right for oneself without over stimulating oneself.

Truth testing is invaluable for so many areas in life especially in health matters as above and in the spiritual area so that one can have Spiritual Freedom and then Spiritual Compatibility with one's soul mate.

The problem with a lot of these "this is good for you", "that's bad for you" stories you see in the news is that lots of substances that we eat/drink have postitive and negative effects. So one group of researchers will find positive effects, and another will find negative effects, and the media will spin their findings whichever way sells more papers/gets more viewers/etc.

Caffeine gives you a jolt of energy and alertness, but it also throws your brain chemistry out of whack (by causing your brain to make more adenosine receptors - you can look it up on Wikipedia), which actually makes you feel MORE tired than usual if you don't have that next cup. So is it good for you or bad for you?

If having more energy is the issue, eating smart, getting enough sleep (easier than it sounds, I know), and excercise are much better solutions.

I found over the years not to get too caught up in all the talk about what is good and what is bad. Eat healthy but have your treats too. In moderation again.

Also the way you think about food before you ingest it affects the way your body processes it. If you are worried or concerned or thinking you shouldn't before you eat or drink something it affects your digestion. So if you are going to eat or drink something feel good about your decision. If you don't feel good about it don't eat it.

I can't prove coffee is harmfull, but I drink it pretty seldom. Now I live with a simply rule: What looks nice, tastes and smells good is a good food or drink (Allen Carr wrote about it in 'Easy way to lose weight'). And I remmember coffee was disgusting the first time i tasted it (and not only the first time). Later I just fooled myself it's tasty...

And coffee (coffeine) didn't help me to work or study at night. Actually, I was drinking coffee before going to sleep not so long ago...

Maybe there are good things coffee gives but I believe it does not counterbalance harmful effects of it.

Of course, it's only my opinion

    regards,
    M.Bruso

I drink a lot of very strong coffee, but I have found that when I get jittery, a cup of hot water satisfies me almost as much as the coffee. I really think it is because it is a hot drink, and I associate hot drinks with comfort and relaxation, a treat if you will. I do not pay much attention to the health hype because there are things way worse for you than coffee and it seems like an innocuous vice at worst.

Coffee is both harmful and good for you hence the difference between different health gurus. As many have said one, two even three cups a day tend to be better than harmful.

However, tea specially green tea has all the advantages of coffee (antioxidants) with fewer disadvantages - however this said the advantages of enjoying life are most important. If you enjoy the coffee and do not become jittery (caffeine overdose) and sleep well (too much coffee in the evening can cause insomnia) go for it and enjoy yourself.

All the 2-3 cups a day are guidelines and only you know what is the right amount for you.

Moderation is the key. Statistics and studies can generally be skewed to "prove" anything one way or the other. I have known people that can drink coffee at night and sleep like a baby. I have seen a guy drink coffee after 5 pm and not be able to sleep. It is up to the individual and how it effects them. Back in my Psychology Masters' Degree I remember reading an experiment that was done on spiders. They compared LSD, Cannabis and Caffeine to see the effect that these may have on the spiders' web creation. The results were as follow: Spiders on LSD created extremely complex patterns, those in cannabis started great but never finished their webs and those on caffeine were with the most mistakes been made.

    Sincerely

Not what you want to hear about moderation:

Even a little coffee 1st thing is know to elevate LDL Cholestral all day.
This throws of your symphony of hormones off, which run everything.

As mentioned, coffee is both toxic, harsh & acidic (hence the breath deal)
This leaches you of alkaline minerals (i.e. we are all starved for.
LDL is there because you arteries are getting burned or at least irritated & inflamed. NOT good...

We should share ideas as how to better get Magnesium & calcium back into our bodies - and not with pills or "tablets." And staying alkaline. Learn about pH your life depends on it. Yeah, yeah, the 100 old cigar smoking boozhound - great genes maybe but our genes are actually getting weaker.
Uhhhh... hello: child obesity & adult onset diabetes

On the other hand Coffee is beautifully aromatic - definitely has some benifits. Coffee in enemas (eeeewwwe gross) is incredible for the liver & detoxification. That's my next evolution.

Personally I like cacao - still not ideal but you get super focused & alert.

Green tea is great - make sure waters & showers are chlorine free as it makes green tea mutagenic.

Learn about Hydration, alkalinity & minerals (coffee antagonizes all three)

If you must - balance your diet with alkaline foods, greens, cellery & grapefruit. If you can buy Phour salts from phmiracle.com (cheezy package - but amazing product to keep you alkaline regardless.

Mercola.com another good site. Was #1 for natural health sites at one point
He's pretty good. And if you can "body ecology diet" rocks by Donna Gates

Hope I didn't upset anyone here going on & all...

To each his/her own. I, on the other hand, believe coffee is not good for you. Caffine and other additives that it contains are addictive and harmful to your health. If you need it to stay awake, get more sleep. If you need it to feel like you have more energy, start working out more. If you drink it because you like it, use moderation. Anything that gives you withdrawals is obviously not good for your body and health. Use your head. Take care of yourself because nobody else will.

All my life I heard that drinking coffee was not good for our health!
However, recently, I read some scientific studies which stated that coffee ingestion is very good on preventing diabetes, Parkinson disease, dementia, Alzheimer disease, fighting asthma attacks, increasing the state of alert and it has a great antioxidant activity.

We must not forget, though, that coffee contains cafeine and that cafeine is a stimulant of the central nervous system, which can cause insomnia, headaches, anxiety, dizziness and vertigo. It is also a strong diuretic for some people and it can cause physical dependence (4 or more cups a day)!

So, the keyword is: moderation. Drink it but don't abuse it!

Personally, I enjoy drinking coffee... just the taste of it... I don't feel any side effects!

I think using this stuff in the morning is gross, on an empty stomach, I would hate that. Both the feeling in your stomach and your head getting a rush, while you are still hungry.

Even with breakfast it's just not right.

I have been known to enjoy a vanilla latte, or some of those cold mocha or vanilla iced packaged drinks from starbucks, I usually add like 30% more milk since they are too sweet.

I kind of like these at dinner time, or at night, to feel more focused or as a digestif, maybe slight pick-me-up, Not really to deal with being totally tired.

Not the kind of person who goes on benders of coffee, but, I used to be pretty into soft drinks, still love sugar.

I haven't read all replies here, but I know a few things about coffee:

    1. It's good for meetings, sales situations etc. as people are *a bit* more likely to accept offers when they drink coffee.
    2. 2-3 cups a day, has many advantages, but also a few disadvantages. I think it's approximately 50/50 pros/cons, but more than that is just bad. (I read a pretty difuse article in mens health, where they really draw no other conclusion than saying more than 3 cups is bad)
    3. I'm pretty sure I had more point when I started to write... Better get some coffee :p

Word of warning, I used to drink 8 large cups of brewed coffee per day at a high stress job. I started to get palpitations at first then this turned into panic attacks. I quit coffee completely and the feeling went away plus my stress went down. Now if I even have one cup I can end up getting major jitters, like I became caffeine intolerant all of a sudden. So which is correct? What are the pros and cons of drinking coffee? I'm a coffee lover, so I hope it's a healthy drink.

    Thanks,
    Michael
    Hi Michael,

I have at least 2 cups a day, my mom drinks at least 5 cups a day!
To honest I reckon 1/2 a day is not bad and yo will get all the benefits, having said that make sure it is real coffee not the instant variety. Real coffee is great and once you develop a taste for it you will always want a good coffee.
Moderation is not a bad thing as too much of a good thing can turn to being harmful.
    Enjoy,

So do fruits and green leafy vegetables and lots of other things though. I mean, if you just enjoy coffee and you do it in moderation, so be it. But if you're drinking it to get antioxidants, then there are other ways to get them that don't have any negative side effects - and which will give you more of a stable supply of energy rather than getting a quick boost and then crashing a few hours later.

On a side note, I usually get really bad allergies (itchy eyes, sneezing, runny nose, etc.) in the springtime and this past year, I noticed that they weren't as severe as usual. I happened to be drinking about 2 cups of coffee at the time (I usually drink it for a few weeks each year, then stop), and I Googled it and saw a some article that mentioned that some people say coffee helps minimize their allergies. On the other hand, some people say it makes theirs worse, so go figure.

Yes and everybody also knows that if you digest antioxidants they are going to be destroyed by stomach acids.

I thought everybody knew already that the whole antioxidants thing is a huge scam because only way you can get more antioxidants into your body is to go by sticking a needle in your vein. This was first proved in the 80s if I remember correctly. It is scary that big magazine like Cosmo doesn't check their "facts".

If you don't believe me, just google around.

I drink two strong espressos a day, I don't think that I am addicted since I often go for days without one when I travel since I don't like to drink bad coffee, life is too short for that.
Coffee has many health benefits when drunk moderately: no more than 2 or 3 cups a day.
If anyone is interested in the history of coffee I would suggest a great book by Stewart Lee Allen: "The Devil's Cup". A great read and funny as hell.

Compare coffee to Cola, which would you pick for taste and health benefits?

Caffeine is a stimulant and is the element that gives coffee and many other beverages their jolt. It is definitely a central-nervous-system stimulant. It acts as a mild stimulant to the central nervous system and both regular and decaf coffee can irritate the stomach. Drinking caffeine in boundless amounts as coffee or tea (which may actually have more caffeine than coffee) over a short period of time has been shown to raise blood sugar. So if you are prone to blood sugar issues, beware! And, if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, lower your current caffeine intake to less than 300 milligrams a day or three cups of coffee.

The general rule for drinking coffee is to make sure that you don't drink it in excess. Coffee can be good in certain cases and bad in others. As you've noticed by now, the recurring theme in our answers is "moderation" - and it is the very reason why everyone ignores cliches. Cliches, though, are for the most part true. So for the majority of mankind, it is probably best to drink coffee in moderation.

Here's my take on this. I was a coffee drinker for many years, and I couldn't hardly get out of bed without a cup of coffee. But one day I decided to completely give it up and after a few days of breaking the addiction and feeling horrible, I've never felt better. I need less sleep, can get out of bed easier in the morning, and am much more alert and energetic all day long.

Having said that, I don't have anything against coffee itself, it is rich in antioxidants and can be god for you, I'm just against the addiction to caffeine.

Have you considered it might be allergy or something?

As for business, coffee is supposedly good for making deals, as the one who drinks it will be less resistant to your offers. I read it in some entrepeneur magazine, and it didn't say it had a "huge" effect, but it adds up

I've also read that you can drink up to 3 cups day, and the benefits will be close to equal with the disadvantages. If you drink more than that, it will do you nothing good.

Yes coffee is good for you in moderation. Studies over the last three years have indicated that coffee has more antioxidants than any other liquid on the planet. Thats more than green tea or any tea for that matter. Also I want to add that coffee is good for you if you do not have any heart or blood pressure problems.

I love coffee but make sure i drink in moderation.
Coffee has both pros and cons that have been covered here.
I would suggest that you keep it below 2 cups a day and for every cup of coffee you drink that you drink two cups of water.
Now as far as business, i would say coffee has been a plus for me.
As an example when i have quit drinking coffee for 6 months or so, my teeth get whiter and i seem much more mellow, then i look back and say what the heck did i get done? not much.
When i drink coffee i get so much accomplished and even seem to keep in better shape.

Moderation is always the best idea in most cases and as far as the different reports you read it depends on who's interest they are serving. Looking at the widely different opinions in this thread and other scientific and medical theories and findings, the jury's still out in the coffee case and looks likely to remain out for a long time.
But, in my opinion, an excellent cup of strong macchiato is one of the finest taste experiences in the world ranking alongside vintage champagne, fine oysters, a perfect strawberry, the concoctions of great chefs and all the other yummy things that I'm drooling over as I write this.

it really depends on your goal? Is it good for you? No. Should you drink it? depends on you. In a perfect world you should just drink water and green juiced veggies. But that wouldnt be living.

Bro, my wife loves coffee as it is a culture thing with her. She is from the Cape Verde Islands and she grew up drinking coffee. Me personally, I like it but don't drink it often. My wife sometimes gets me to drink it with her. Who cares if it is good or bad. If you drink it in moderation it can't be that bad for you. Water is good for the body but if you drink way too much of it it can kill you. So I say if drinking coffee brings you peace and joy then drink your coffee.

The key to most areas of our diet is moderation - I have also read that organic is better. I have found the supermarkets now offer some brands in organic. The taste is actually better.

As far as sweeteners - I don't use any, but anything else I may sweeten, I use the Sweet Leaf.

Yes workingmamma - the news is always coming up with some different thing that is good for you one day and going to kill you the next day. In fact you will laugh - but I remember hearing that toast (yep - good old toasted bread) was cancer causing.

So -- the key to all diets is definitely "a little won't hurt", which is what most of you are agreeing on.

    All right guys...

I know I had the second response on this thread, and know what I said originally. Now, months later, I have to update.

    I've quit coffee.

Yes, there are certain health benefits to coffee. I'll still enjoy a cup now and then for the taste. But I no longer use it to get me going in the morning.

I decided to quit because I no longer wanted some external substance to dictate how my day would get started. If I didn't get my morning cup of joe, I'd get agitated, annoyed, and thinking only where that cup of coffee would be coming from next. I decided, "You know what - I'm in charge here. Not the caffeine. I am."

I'm still going through withdrawal (I only quit a few weeks ago), but I've been calmer, sleeping better, been able to focus and think a lot more clearly. I've also been told I'm less agitated, not nearly as bitchy, and generally more pleasant to be around.

I decided it was time to take back control. As I said before, I still love the taste of coffee, and would still get a pumpkin spice latte or mocha frappuccino when hanging out with a friend. I just no longer depend on it to wake me up in the morning - my life will go on regardless.

Interesting observation, Emily. I think I'm a fellow coffee addict as well, and crave both the taste and the caffeine kick that comes along with a cup of coffee. I wish you much luck in your continuing journey to withdraw from coffee as a daily routine; your withdrawal symptoms are a little different from mine though, as I tend to become very lethargic, listless, sometimes even melancholy (and often end up with a splitting headache as well). In short, I lack ambition and any semblance of motivation before I've had my first cup of coffee in the morning. Once I have that first and sometimes second cup of coffee, I'm good to go and really don't crave it at all later in the day. Without coffee, I also tend to sleep for extended stretches at night (9-10 hours or more), and still wake up feeling lethargic with that murky brain fog which just won't go away.

Any thoughts and experiences you'd like to share on how you got past this initial stage of coffee withdrawal?

It wasn't premeditated at all, I just literally woke up one morning and decided I didn't want to bother with it anymore.

I'm not gonna lie to you - it was really, really rough. Caffeine stays in your system anywhere between 10 and 24 hours - and I'd have 2-3 "cups" (though they weren't exactly 6 oz cups, so probably more like 4-5) a day for years. Since my body was obviously used to this stimulant in my bloodstream 24 hours a day, going cold turkey wasn't exactly welcoming at first. I was pretty tired all day, and the next day I had to make coffee for someone else and it smelled sooooooo good, but then I thought, "Just because it's there doesn't mean I have to have it."

As for quality of sleep, mine's improved significantly... like I said earlier, caffeine stays in your system up to 24 hours, even when you're sleeping, so it'll disrupt that sleep. I felt the same way - if I didn't get my coffee, I'd just drag ass all day no matter how much sleep I got.

I started drinking a lot more water and eating healthier - that's the only way, really, to push through withdrawal symptoms. Instead of waking up with stimulants, you wake up with nutrition and hydration, if that makes sense. It's still not easy, I really wouldn't mind a cup of coffee right about now - but it really just comes down to willpower.

    Personally, I don't drink coffee.

I don't think its good for you because it stains your teeth. That's right!

And if you're tired, get more rest.

If you don't want to do that, try water. (Sometimes we lack energy simply because we are dehydrated)

Caffeine is a stimulant, and it goes against what your body is naturally trying to tell you if you have it when you are tired. (If you're tired don't try and chemically stimulate your body - Rest!)

Don't fight your body and its signals! Work with it.

It's just unnecessary most the time. Unless going to a lot of coffee dates (and thats all coffee IS good for), drink water.

    Be like water my friend!

It has good and bad properties. I've been trying to cut back because I have trouble with irregular heartbeats. I've noticed that the boost I get from coffee seems more psychological, so for me even decaf or tea helps me perk up.

Coffee does cotain some antioxidants, however the downside is that it messes with your blood sugar which can lead to insulin resistance and weight gain, depletes vital nutrients such as magnesium, stimulates your adrenal glands which can lead to adrenal exhaustion, and uses up methyl groups in the liver to detoxify the chlorogenic acid it contains. There does seem to be a link with high coffee drinkers and depression. This may be due to using up methyl groups which we need to make the happy brain chemicals. If you like coffee limit it to two cups a day.

Although too much of it might cause disruption in sleep pattern and awareness as well as other possibly cardiological side effects..

I think if you apply a good balance of everything you eat and drink, including coffee it does have health benefits. There is an article on WebMD that is suggesting from the latest research that Coffee may actually lower the risk of Type 2 diabetes, Parkinsons and Colon Cancer. People who suffer from migraines and headaches are given medications with the main ingredient being....Caffeine. Hope this helps

I read the book "Caffeine Blues" and it totally convinced me to get off coffee. I did not, however go cold turkey. My wife and I used Teechino very effectively to wean ourselves off over a two week period. I would recommend 3-4 weeks as I was still totally shot. In fact day 14 I was literally putting just a 1/2 tbsp. of regular coffee, and that made a huge difference.

I did go back on and had a full strength Starbucks Venti and I immediately found myself angry and short tempered.

Just because we don't think we feel it's doing us harm does not mean it isn't. Kind of like Hydrogenated oil in the body. It may not make us sick right away...but builds up over time.

Coffee has recently been found to contain some very important antioxidants that prevent cancer and attack free radicals in your body.

I have heard that caffeine slows down your growth hormones.
I have also heard that Caffeine is good for your skin and that coffee may have an insulin-regulating effect

However, like anything else, you can go overboard, so drink up in moderation and enjoy your coffee!

I love coffee and the thing I love most about it is the aroma...oh, and the ritual of making it in a cafetiere (French press) every morning...

Could never give it up entirely and I, too, believe in everything in moderation. It's what my Mum told me and that's good enough for me! Besides, coffee grounds are great used as a skin scrub and apparently work against the dreaded cellulite. I say apparently because I'm far too busy drinking it to slap it against my thighs but you could always give it a go and tell me if it works...

I've had a pretty bad coffee addiction. I've switched to green tea and it's worked very well for me. Yerba mate is also good.

The information on coffee is very contradictory. I read the research carefully and concluded it was probably ok with some health benefits.

The studies that say it's bad for you don't take other factors into account (like the person's diet is crap and even without coffee they'd still have all these problems).

But I eventually gave up coffee because it was messing with my ability to get a deep and restful sleep at night.

It was also rough on my stomach at times (I did drink a lot).

As with many things in life, I think it's a matter of moderation how much of something you have. When a cup or two may be beneficial or at least not harmful, that doesn't mean that two POTS would have benefits. Just like dark chocolate... health benefits for a little bit at a time but NOT good to sit down and eat a few bars of it in one sitting.

As a side note, when I needed to stop drinking coffee, my blood pressure and pulse rate reduced considerably... so my own benefits came in quitting caffeine. I now drink it once in a while, but very rarely and never more than a cup at a time.

      Hi Michael,

I don´t drink a lot of coffee because after a couple of cups, it gives me the shakes and makes me nauseous. I know if doesn´t have that effect on everybody, but for me, it´s not good to drink too much.

On the other hand, my wife suffers with asthma and if she has an attack which isn´t improved by using her inhaler, she drinks very strong, black coffee until she can get treatment, which makes her feel a lot better. Apparently, it´s something to do with the caffeine. Coke also has a similar effect - the drink, not the drug!

So, in answer to your question as to whether coffee is good or bad for you, I guess it depends on,

      a) the individual
      b) how much of the stuff you actually drink

Like others have said, if it´s in moderation, I guess it can´t be too bad for you.

      Just my opinion.

      All the best,

      Brian

This debate has been going on for a long time..The caffeine is supposed to be good for your metabolism, and preventing alzheimer's. On the other hand it says it also stunts your growth, on the other hand it says it helps keep your brain activity up etc....this is a back and forth debate all the time.

I choose to believe in moderation ok. It can however cause dehydration due to the caffeine so you need to drink an extra cup of water for every cup of coffee you drink. I love my mocha's. But at times it seems to give me a headache. I'm sensitive to gluten and just heard that coffee contains gluten? It was on Dr. Oz. I've had dandylion tea, it tastes comparable to coffee and is more herbal. I also once had gano derm, I think that was the name? It comes from a mushroom and is touted as a healthy coffee alternative. It was so good.

Throughout the last few years, I have grown extremely addicted and now I can't sleep at night Also, coffee is largely responsible for me getting into the IM niche. Hello Michael,

I am new to this forum & this is my 1st post.

A client of mine was a coffee baron, and I always made friends with the owners of restaurants or chefs of places I dined, even during traveling. I would pick their brains for tips, tricks & avoids regarding food, alcoholic drinks & coffee.

They all pretty much said the same thing. Coffee is healthiest when the bean is freshly ground and used then and there. Not to mention having the right temperature of water to filter thru the ground coffee. Never drink coffee that has been sitting on the burner for more than 10 min. (that's why you see some coffee houses using those thermoses) and the way to see if you have a healthy cup of coffee is to look for the coffee oil (tiny blobs), floating at the top.
It's those oils that have the health benefits. Coffee that has been sitting on the burner is rot gut. Yep, it will hurt your tummy & or intestines. Maybe that is why millions of ppl have IBS, Acid Reflux, et., bcos the types of dried out coffee beans they are drinking at work all day or instant kind, which is actually harmful in the long run. Google search: coffee & IBS

But, freshly ground oily fresh beans, brewed & drank right away ie: expresso method, is actually very healthy for you. You can brew regular coffee in a stove top expresso pot. The Italian connoisseurs will probably freak out, but hey, regular coffee done that way is just fine. Just remember to pack it down & use a strong blend.

Oh, btw: If you do go out of your way to buy nice fresh oily beans (cost more & taste amazing) keep in mind, if you use a coffee filter of any kind, those healthy oils will not make it into your cup. Hence the stove top expresso pot or the French Press or the Turkish method. Also, those oils dry up pretty quick so it's best to grind as you use.
Trust me.....it's a pain, but sooooo worth it!

I don't think there's anything definitive about the health benefits/implications of coffee. If even medical professionals can't agree on whether coffee is bad or not, then it'd be impossible to conclude definitively one way or the other.

I think coffee has to be judged on an individual basis, because some people (like you) tend to have an adverse reaction to it, i.e. you get jumpy, irritable, your pulse is racing, etc. Not everyone reacts this way to coffee though.

I suffer from no such symptoms, and it really helps me to get clear and focused on whatever I'm doing. Of course, anything taken in large quantities isn't good for you, so I'm not advocating that anyone goes out there and start drinking 6 cups of coffee a day.

Simple answer but this should be accurate:

Coffee basically is acid entering our body, for those of us who are into the ph level thingy, coffee is harmful as it raises the acid levels in our body.

Drinking a cup a day as alright, but, as we get older into our 30's it is better to stop drinking coffee as we tend to gain weight (yes, acids in our body make us gain weight).

If you're that worried about the acidity of coffee, then start drinking lattes instead of black coffee - just add milk to your coffee if you're that concerned about it (use skim or low-fat milk if you're concerned about gaining weight!)

Sarah, unfortunately in most cases energy drinks are probably much worse than coffee. Firstly, they're really loaded with sugar (I tend to mostly drink my coffee black, so I don't put any sugar in it) and they also have other stimulants/additives that aren't good for you, chief of which is Taurine (found in Red Bull and just about every mainstream energy drink). I don't want to go into a long discourse about it, but if you google it, you'll find a host of research pointing to its detrimental effects on the kidney.

Coffee really isn't that good for you since it leaves you dehydrated, causes headaches, stains your teeth and rots them depending on how much sugar you use.
A rule of thumb is that 8 ounces, or one small cup, of coffee in one day is perfectly fine and will still give you all the benefits, such as the antioxidants.
    A healthier alternative is tea.
But I know what you mean, I love the flavor of coffee. Don't drink it for the caffeine, just the taste and when I crave it I can't think about anything until I taste that sweet coffee!

I drink too much coffee and always have it strong too.

I also have a weakness for the big size Mocha Coffees at Cafe Nero; an ideal way to spend an hour on a Sunday, sat reading the Sunday newspapers over a couple of those...

Well, with coffee or tea, you should always make it a rule to drink a glass of plain water for each cup that you drink, and this will combat the dehydration. This is probably what causes the headaches as well.

Thankfully, I love to drink my coffee black, so I don't have any worries about rotting teeth and calories! I have learned over the years to drink all my beverages without sugar, and this includes tea as well, and this cuts out a lot of unnecessary calories. I'd avoid all artificial and natural sweeteners if possible, and just by learning to do this, you end up making your beverages so much healthier!

This is a very popular topic! Apparantly, coffee would never have been bought to the west, had we known how addictive it was!

I asked a naturapath about having a coffee everyday. His suggestion was, it was okay, but once a week your body needs a break from the habit.

Coffee is definately a crutch for the mind, but its still nice! I found out that my blood type A+, actually benefits from moderate coffee and green tea. Perhaps it is not for all blood types though!

I feel better that its good for my blood type! If we feel something is good for us, it is good, if we feel we are taking something which isn't good for us, its not good for us.
Its all in the way we think!

Coffee reduces the risks of liver cancer, Parkinson's plus heart disease, but simultaneously it will erode your calcium in case you drink in excess. Fortunately for you but sadly for me, it is the women at higher risk for calcium loss in that event.

I'm more of a tea & pop/soda drinker, and my doctor warned me about drinking too much caffeine. I actually got really sick years ago from drinking too much caffeine.

Like many have already said, moderation is probably the answer to this.

Fred, I think caffeine is one of those things that can have vastly different effects on different people.

I'd also caution against drinking too much soda (I seldom ever drink it myself), because that is even worse for you than either tea or coffee. You are either ingesting huge amounts of high fructose corn syrup, which is really bad for you in so many ways, or artificial sweeteners (in the case of diet soda) which has its own list of detrimental effects (google "aspartame side effects" to see what I mean).

    Excellent way of putting it.

I totally agree. Moderation is key for just about everything, except maybe water. You'd probably get sick of water before drinking too much of it - it's very vital for the human body, as it's composed of anywhere from 55% to 78% water, depending on body size.

Coffee has its good and bad effects. The key is moderation. Always remember that anything too much is always bad for our health.

I haven't read the whole thread, but in case someone hasn't mentioned it yet.

Caffeine is nature's pesticide:Caffeine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Caffeine is found in varying quantities in the beans, leaves, and fruit of some plants, where it acts as a natural pesticide that paralyzes and kills certain insects feeding on the plants".

      Think about it.

Exactly what I was going to say.

I drank coffee regularly for at least 5 years (1-2 cups a day)....all of a sudden started having palpitations and other symptoms. Got tested for everything, one day I had to fast before blood work and thought 'gee, I feel a little better this morning'. After the blood test, got a coffee and felt like I was having a heart attack. Looked it up, seems that it's possible to develop an intolerance for caffeine. My doctor looked at me funny when I said it but stopped coffee, symptoms gone.

I would certainly look up caffeine allergy/caffeine intolerance. Like I said, I'd been drinking it for years with no problem.

I'm no expert on coffee (I don't drink it myself) but from what I've been able to gather, the "energy" created by coffee is "fake".

"Fake" in the sense that your body uses 4 times as much REAL energy on getting rid of the waste from the "energy" you got from the coffee.

Here's another good time to test. I can take coffee or leave it. And for some reason even if I drink coffee for a while and then stop, I have no withdrawal effect.
