Don't Seek Motivation, Apply Discipline

Learning to apply and increase your discipline is far more beneficial than searching for motivation.

Motivation is usually only short term. You watch a video or read a quote and for only 10 minutes afterwards will you take action towards your goal.

Discipline lasts a lifetime. If you have discipline, it will not matter how you feel; you will take action towards your goal every day and you will have an incredible probability of success.

I have written a post on discipline and motivation that you might like to read. You can find it at http://ambitionism.com/posts/discipline-is-greater-than-motivation

Speaking of motivation I'm starting to doubt yours...

Not entirely - motivation is the key to momentum and, I'd say, is a separate topic from discipline. We can all probably agree that being consistent in doing the things that will satisfy your definition of success is the easiest way to obtain it (success), but knowing what exactly you want can't be born out of discipline. If we all relied on discipline we'd be living in our parent's basement right now.

Sometimes people need to be motivated just so they remember what is possible, a sort of shake to remind them they are alive and that they actually do have desires apart from just getting by... and that brings the best of us to then prove to ourselves that we can actually achieve that.

I agree that knowing/finding your goal does not start with discipline. Motivation should be used as the starting base in which you will then work towards what you want.

Motivation however is NOT the key to momentum, discipline is. Discipline is what keeps you going; Motivation is what sets you to the task.

Largely true in my experiences. You can learn to develop a passion by just doing it and learning more about it in the process.

That's a great way to put it, yet they can come in either order: Usually, motivation sets the goal and discipline carries it to the finish.

Motivation is a great thing to have, but it tends to be overvalued while discipline is undervalued. Motivation arises from emotion, and emotions by themselves will not necessarily accomplish anything, nor set anyone to action, yet disciplined action towards a goal (born from motivation) will bring success in achieving the goal!

Sometimes we're very motivated, other times we're not. Self-discipline is the key to getting things done even when we're not feeling very motivated. Once I found this out I began to understand why some people are successful and others are not.

Successful people understand the importance of self-discipline and don't rely solely on motivation to push themselves forward.

I recently got out of a rut of slacking off too much (I literally took 1-2 whole months completely off IM)

When I "resumed" in the biz I had shit motivation because of the huge habit interrupt.

So I just made a commitment to myself to just get enough discipline to motivate myself every morning.. Worked like a charm.

Using willpower to force yourself to do something you do not want to do all day really sucks.

I think we need both. We need to motivate ourselves to start, then apply discipline to be consistent, finally habit will take over.

There is one key factor that we may be missing here. It's the fact that we need to learn how to love what we are doing. You have to be passionate about what you are doing. Because if not, when the going gets tough, at some point, motivation will subside, discipline will break and most people will quit.

Steve Jobs explains this much better in this video.

    Hi Guys,

Why? Why do you do what you do? Without this emotion you are dead in the water.

    With it, you:
    • You will never need persistent motivation again
    • Being disciplined becomes your habit nature

Here is the deal; I love what I do. So I need no motivation. I get up and write. I do it naturally. As for being disciplined, habit nature. I know why I want to prosper online; I love freedom.

I am hopping a jet from Delhi, India to NY JFK in 2 days after traveling all through India and spending time in Kathmandu, Nepal. My why is being free to travel, to set my sked and to have no ceiling on my income.

Since I have these Why's in place I rarely need a kick, or boost, or a motivating nudge, and I have developed the habit of being disciplined. Don't even need to think about it.

    Thoughts guys?

    Enjoy your day!

I'd have to agree with you. Motivation comes from action, and if you're disiplined enough to carry out on what you have to do, you'll find motivation coming your way as you go along.

I'd spent 3 months trying to gain motivation to fix up my business. Nothing happened. The day I decided to JUST START, I had gotten more done in that one day than I had in the two months of trying to get motivated. In the end, I felt extremely motivated and from then on just made it into a habit to work.

For me, motivation came because of self-discipline, it helped me to realize that you can work and create regardless of how motivated you are.

Yea, its a great thing to know that progress can always be made, regardless of how you feel.

    Hi
I think motivation is important, as if you are not motivated you can't have discipline in your life. Once you start have discipline in your life you can achieve a lot. Being motivated has helped me to follow discipline.

This is so true, and discipline can be learned in so many ways. I tend to encourage people to learn it through hobbies outside of internet land.
