Historically Who Do You Admire, And Why?

I admire Benjamin Franklin. Not only was he a founding father of our nation, an accomplished statesman and world traveler, but he was an inventor as well. When I consider his contributions to all of humanity, I find him one of the greater of great men who have gone before us.

There is a lot of ground and a lot of magnificent men and women who have crossed it.
Who do you admire historically, and why?

I really look up to Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He was a German Lutheran minister during World War 2. He has a fascinating story of how he stood against Hitler and the Nazi party.

He was executed shortly before the end of the war because he was involved in an assassination attempt of Hitler.

If you aren't familiar with Bonhoeffer, I recommend you check out his Wikipedia Page.

I admire George Washington because he did not take on as much power as some wanted him to, as I understand it. He also helped to create The United States.

Hm, by historically, I think you mean a person who has been dead a long time?

Theodore Roosevelt comes to mind right away, such an inspiring man.

Here is a person to admire that is still alive.

      Bill Gates.

Not for what he did with Microsoft, but for how much money he gives away each year and for starting the Giving Pledge with Warren Buffet. To date they have 113 Billionaires who have committed to give away at least 50% of their fortune when they die.

I read about a year ago that Bill Gates had already donated almost $37 Billion to charity including his own foundation. That is pretty admirable.

if bill gates was genuinely interested in saving the world he should lower the cost of technology in developing countries, not merely giving a tiny fraction of his wealth and talking continuously about it

Christ, for being pretty much perfect As for alive folks Warren Buffet inspires me. The man cares about his craft. No interest in spending money on stuff other than investing. It mystifies me that he has been one of the wealthiest people on earth for a long time and still lives in the same house he bought in the '60s. Also, he recently bought his first new car. I admire who simply cares about their craft and little else. I am not such a person lol.

Alexander the great - not because of his violence, but his sheer capability of dreaming BIG and achieving them at any cost... breaking all conventional notions!!

"By the age of thirty, he had created one of the largest empires of the ancient world, stretching from the Ionian Sea to the Himalayas. He was undefeated in battle and is considered one of history's most successful commanders. His empire stretched from Greece to modern-day Pakistan."

Qaid-E-Azam (meaning 'The Great Leader') Mohammed Ali Jinnah who was the founder of Pakistan. Totally devoted to his Law profession and then during the latter years of his life, fighting for Independence of Pakistan against huge odds & challenges (not least his own detoriating health). I think this man is very under-acknowledged in the study of Historical leaders.

As a physics major who took a course on special relativity, it just blows my mind how incredibly creative this man must have been to come up with the stuff that he did, especially given the historical context of the times he was in.

In fact, scientists are some of the most creative people out there. Unfortunate that most people get scarred in high school taking math and science courses, thinking that its only for uncreative logical thinkers.

Now that I`m thinking of famous scientists, Michael Faraday comes up. This man literally started from the bottom, and then revolutionized our way of thinking about electricity (with obvious influence on our modern lives)
