How to set and achieve your goals for 2014.

It's the season. Let's look at goals for 2014. This post will give you some food for thought regarding goals and the reasons why as many as 95% of people do NOT reach their goals, OK?

If you are a goal achieving monster, probably not much of interest for you here. So, let's pick two typical goals to use as examples and of course goals come in all shapes and sizes:

Goal ONE: lose 25 pounds and get six pack abs in 2014.

Goal TWO: Earn $100,000.00 in 2014 from your Internet Marketing efforts.

Two worthwhile goals, eh?
Although there are thousands of reasons and excuses why we don't achieve our goals, there are only 7 EXITS on the expressway to our success. We'll take a look at each one.

Napoleon Hill in Think And Grow Rich wrote about guys who carry the ball 98 yards down the field (American football) but don't cross the goal line. They stop short of the goal. But the truth is only a very small percent even get that far, most of us give up far sooner than that.

A study of goal setting and achievement shows that there are these SEVEN exits along the way, that is, these seven universal reasons for not reaching our goals.

Exit ONE happens fairly soon after setting our goal and it is a combination of overwhelming doubt combined with inexperience. It goes something like this;
"I've been a fat boy all my life, how can I possibly lose all that weight and have a six pack, I hate to exercise." OR, "I've never made 35 thousand dollars before, what makes me believe I can make 100?"

Self- doubt and lack of goal accomplishment is the first exit. The mountain is just too big to climb, what were we thinking?

Exit TWO comes after we have gone to belief, think we can do it and then we start to PLAN. During this planning stage we start to let reality creep in, and perhaps our goal requires more time or more energy than we have for it, so we exit the highway and go back to what we were doing.

Exit THREE comes after we have started, believe we can, plan and then go about the daily routines which are required. These take time. We must adjust our schedules, our lives to accommodate these new behaviors, the new activities we must involve ourselves in. This is harder than we imagined, so off we go.

Exit FOUR is down the road. We desire, we want and we plan. We execute the plan, get through the period where we develop new habits and rituals, then do a look at the calendar. Ooops, we're several weeks or months into it, lost a few pounds but still got a gut, made a few bux but far, far away from our 100 grand. It appears we've made a mistake. Our plan isn't working.

Exit FIVE is just ahead, We've been distracted, have taken a detour and now know our plan is off, so what is the point of getting back on track? Besides, since the goal was set, I've changed my mind and now want something different, something even better.

Exit SIX is where the deadline is in sight, we're 9 months into the year, where has all the time gone? There is only a short period left, the holidays are coming up, Why do I need to lose weight? The goal, within our sight is shaky, sketchy and shrouded in fog. WHY? Oh well, maybe next year.

And SEVEN is the one Napoleion Hill discusses, the guy who is either afraid of success, not committed to do what it takes or just doesn't know how close he is. Can you see any of your own exits from the highway to success?

What makes a good goal? A goal that is doable, reachable and attainable?
A good goal is one where you know your desired outcome in experiential detail, what it looks and feels like and this requires imagination. A good goal motivates with anticipation and expectation. A good goal has time increments to accomplish tasks.

The 25 pounds could be lost in 7 or 8 months, doesn't require starvation or deprivation just caloric adjustment and exercise. Sine a flat stomach is desired, you know that crunches, core or ab exercise is required so the sooner you make it a habit, the better you will do. You could focus on 6 months of learning about your core, doing exercises, SLOWLY losing the weight and flourish strong in the last 3 months with exercise. You have cut out some pics of washboard abs. You have your head on this body you desire, your every food decision is made with this image in mind.

You will see someone next year at the pool or beach and they will react, and you imagine this positive reaction again and again.

In order to make your 100 grand in IM, you need to pick a way of earning and apply what is known. You could do it with ONE transaction next year. The type of people who do? Well there are real estate agents who sell commercial and expensive residential properties.

Yacht brokers. Contractors. IMers? Well who do you follow? You could do it as a copywriter with a winner for a big company.

But, say you need to make 100 transactions with 1,000 profit each. OR, it may be possible to sell 100,000 items with a buck profit.

A goal can be achieved many ways, what is important for you as you are choosing your goals is to take the path of YOUR least resistance, do what is right for you, what suits you.

OK, let's set some goals.

A very enlightening post about the usual exits people take on the path to success, I myself have been guilty in the past of taking pretty much all of these exits.

    Hi,

I do new moment goals. Always have, always will, because waiting to change my life for some calendar date sets a dangerous precedent; it lends my power away.

I have been traveling the world for almost 3 years running. I am moving to Thailand again in a few weeks and doing Fiji for 4 months after that. Since being free and traveling all over the world are my biggest goals everything is set up nicely.

As for blogging goals I am still posting 5 times a day; Alexa dropping by 1,000 daily recently....all good there

Set goals for now and get cracking on them now; this is how you can become the envy of all, who are waiting for next week to change their lives.

Thanks for the 7 exits...I will make sure to keep driving

Thanks for sharing this. I can associate with quite a few of these "exits."

I set my goals during this Summer and I've spent the second half of 2013 streamlining ready for 2014 and beyond.

My goal? I want to at least double my income and cash flow.
How? More clients and bigger profits and...HARD WORK.

      Well written post. Thanks.

I have been reading "It Works" by RHJ and have set up my own list of goals. Not all of them are about losing weight and making money, but some of them are.

Best of luck to everyone whatever their goals are in 2014.

Great post Gordon. One of many. I am making my main goal to learn and implement toll positions. I have read Harvey Brody's interview multiple times. I would love to find his course somewhere. Have had zero luck. Which other mentors would be best able to teach me the Harvey Brody way of "toll position"? I appreciate any reply.

I've been down those exits before! Usually fail to get on the highway in the first place

I'm really proud to announce, though, that I have FINALLY gotten my first internet business up and running and am already pleased with the result.

It took getting laid off to make me do it, but sometimes that's the kick we need, right? I worked in advertising and my agency was my DREAM JOB! But we lost our largest client (won't say who but its the 2nd largest beer company in the US, who we had since 1993 and who paid us over $10 million a year...yep, they ended that relationship with an 8 minute phone convo) and 90% of the company was laid off. Sucks...

BUT, I learned some important things. 1.) in my industry things can change in a moment's notice and 2.) I need to have some additional revenue streams in place to protect myself. I've subscribed to and bought a number of IM products in the past, but the most recent one I purchased literally outlined everything I needed to do step-by-step for me. That, combined with my job situation, made me finally jump in and do this thing.

Thanks for the great post. Sometimes I still struggle with being laid off, and it is posts like this that remind me that I AM IN CONTROL of my personal destiny, not my employer or our (former) clients.
