Giving up before you try

I've recently talked to an aspiring entrepreneur, Mr X (to keep his privacy).

I wasn't frustrated at first, but later it really got up to my neck. It was really hard to explain to him the term "limiting beliefs".

I would short-list a few possible options for him to venture in, and Mr X would agree. He would choose from this list, and then when we get deeper into it, he suddenly jumps back and says this:

"(insert limiting belief here), I'm not good enough!"

Then I discovered that he hasn't been sticking to any one method. He's also been devaluing himself in terms of services he charges for.

Why?

It's his self confidence. It's his perceived self-esteem.

Knowing that your abilities are not up to par is NOT a valid excuse not to undertake a venture that you know will be profitable. Instead of doing that, you should be finding other ways of overcoming this.

The only time when you should try a different venture is when you have hit a profit ceiling and decided that you want to exit the venture. AFTER you have sustained the business!

After talking to this guy, I find that it was his self-confidence getting in everything he does. "I can't do ___ because ____" x999

Needless to say, I was frustrated.

For example, if you're bad at writing books because of your English command and it's recommended not to leave the details to a ghostwriter, it doesn't mean that it's the end of the world. You can research beforehand in bullets, THEN send it to the ghostwriter so you have some sort of control over the content in the book.

Business is really about problem-solving! I get really frustrated when anybody asks about advice and then runs away saying "I can't do this!"

It's not 1+1=2. You can't really expect yourself to sit there and wait for everything to fall conveniently into your lap.

Opportunities are created and permitted. Even lottery tickets have to be bought. IMHO, self-confidence is one of the biggest factors to many aspiring entrepreneurs not succeeding.

Yeah, ends my rant here, but i hope this helps some people.

Did you try to convince him on the issue which the limitation is impermanent(in other words change-able)?
