Are you trying to be a guru?

I think I can tell who is looking to reach guru status and good for you. There's room for everyone here I say. As long as you don't hurt others on the way.

I used to think I wanted that (guru status) but now I think I just want to make my living online. Just not have any financial worries. Period.

The internet is weird, there are great, great folks and real scumbags and I have met a few of both.

Bottom line, I just want to eck out a living, work for myself, and live freely (not a slave to anyone or thing). What about you? Care to share?

So it would be better to publish a list along with the ranking etc. So that others can also get the idea what you think about the GURU to be...

The word guru is not loaded for me. Maybe I haven't been around online long enough Onslaught good for you-- you are an expert in your field! I bet the stigma honest bizpro is referring to is in large part due to the scammers out there.

I just think since there is no degree or anything it's hard to know who are the experts. I come from academia, not that that means anything, but if someone has certain letters after their name, you know right away what their supposed level of expertise is.

Anyhoo I didn't mean to offend anyone. I'm just stinging from the online course that I stupidly signed up for that netted me nada and I have a $2K bill coming up. Not fun.

    Oh well, such is life.

What exactly is a guru in this context? Did it turn into a dirty word for leader, expert, mentor, or someone who walks the talk and knows what the heck they're doing?

None of those things have bad connotations. So why is "guru" such a loathed title? Is it because it has religious overtones? The first definition listed in most dictionaries say that a guru is a religious teacher or spiritual guide in Hinduism. Maybe the way it's thrown around in IM circles cheapens its original meaning. Maybe it seems like the experts are trying to make themselves appear more lofty than they are.

To me, "guru" also happens to be a funny-sounding word. It makes me think of emus or something.

Even if I was a renowned expert on something, I don't think I'd call myself a guru for some of the reasons I've already listed. At the same time, I wouldn't be insulted if someone applied it to me. If people are calling you a guru and mean it in a positive way, you must be doing something right.

    1.) From Dictionary.com:

    gu⋅ru  /ˈgʊəru, gʊˈru/ [goor-oo, goo-roo]
    -noun

1.Hinduism. a preceptor giving personal religious instruction. 2.an intellectual or spiritual guide or leader. 3.any person who counsels or advises; mentor: The elder senator was her political guru. 4.a leader in a particular field: the city's cultural gurus.

2.) Since this is the Mind Forum, I'd like to make a few observations.

    Specifically about your language.

You are changing your thinking. Good for you. But I don't know why you are lowering your expectations. Why don't you want to be a guru in your field? I think mentoring and advising people is one of the best ways to expand your reach, good will, and make money at the same time.

If you find a way to make money online and not have financial worries, then I am sure others would love to know how you did it. This would give you guru status within your own market. It may not be guru (mentor) to thousands or millions, but you would be a guru to someone, which I believe is a very honorable goal.

Bottom line, I just want to eck out a living, work for myself, and live freely (not a slave to anyone or thing). What about you? Care to share?
So now you want to eek out a living. You don't want to have riches and not have to worry about money?

Sometimes we have mind blocks to riches that aren't always seen by ourselves. In order to truly start making money, we must be open to ALL forms of income that the world offers us.

If you keep telling your self that you just want to eek out a living and work for yourself, then that is what you will do.

I know that I want to be rich beyond belief one day so I can help others, monetarily and intellectually. Why would you not want to do the same?

By the spiritual definition of "Guru" - a guru would be a person that is the intermediate between God and Man. Or perhaps the one that takes responsibility for spiritual wellness of /his followers

The guru knows ALL there is within the realm of Man, and is without (visible) questions with regards to the earthly realm.

If the Guru has questions then those questions are between him and God alone.

    and consider this....

In India, a "Guru" is considered a profession by their tax code and within its own tax bracket.....

    --
We can translate that into IM world that Guru is someone who attempts to guide people with less experience in their money making way

It is also very clear that a GURU makes his pay not thorough the methods that he teaches, but rather through the people that buy these methods.

For all intensive and practical purposes, we can consider a Guru an "Entertainer"

I don't think that a person can "try to become a guru" as it takes a certain temperament to look deep into the black annual of the human soul and condition and be able to keep a straight face.

    Some people just Are...

And those that aren't and want to be, must first erase their personal history and reinvent themselves as "no prophet is accepted in his hometown"

    ya Dig..,,

I don't care so much about being a guru as I do creating a weight loss/health website that offers helpful information to others. My ultimate goal is to keep on expanding my website to the point where I am receiving a good amount of traffic each and every day, making a full time income, and helping others as a result.

I don't think I want to be a guru at all. In Malay, 'guru' means teacher and that is something difficult to achieve, everyone can be a 'guru' but not everyone can be an excellent 'guru'.

There are lots of people earning a lot of money not look at as guru. I guess it depends on your definition of guru. Guru to me is just someone that has mastered a subject.

I know a few people that might be look at as a guru because of the money they earn when infact they dont know much. Example. They get like 5 leads a day but earn a huge income because they are great at closing 2k sales.

Just be yourself and the best in the thing that interests you the most and ultimately you will be a guru. A "Guru" is acquiring excellence in whatever you do and I think that would be only in the area that thrills and excites you. It should come naturally from within yourself and not to be manipulated by imitating somebody. What do you say guys?

I like being a guru in the sense that I teach people stuff. I don't like the cult mindset that goes with a lot of gurus and their followers. I definitely don't want to be a cult leader and have that "cult leader status" that many gurus have.

I used to help all my friends with homework when i was in school and being an info marketer is kinda like that, only we get paid for it

The Internet is the outside world's most intimate aspect. Under the threat of anonymity there are many who reveal their true nature online. One can't help to do this, it's an intimate process, typing here where your thoughts are free to roam. It's this filtered reality that allows the masses to dabble in voyeuristic opinionism (new word!). I think it's awesome but at the same time it can make for the perfect breeding ground for predators. What is it about typing barefoot that make so many of us forget our common sense?

If anybody ever considers me a guru I hope it's for positive thing. Although guru status is not something somebody tries to achieve. It is something that just happens.

I really do not like the word "guru" and the like. Anyone who wants to be a "guru" is doing everything for the wrong reasons.

My newsletters are up to 20 pages long and read by hundreds of thousands of regular readers every week. I get countless emails of thanks, changes peoples lives etc. but I absolutely refuse to be thought of as a guru, or even a teacher.

I am simply someone who cares deeply about fellow humans and wishes to help.

I get lots of requests for my photo especially from India where some people see me as their guru - I have to politely refuse and explain why without upsetting them.

Never elevate yourself above others - we are All One and we are All Equal.

I saw a movie once where there was a rich investor sitting in his office, and he called in his assistant. "Buy all the shares of this company you can at any price," he said. His assistant went "WTF, that company sucks" but shrugged and gave the order.

On the sales floor of the NYSE, word started to travel that he was buying all the shares of this company. Other people started buying. The price went up. And up. And up. Finally, the assistant walked back into his office and said "nobody will sell anymore; we could only get X million shares."

And the investor said "Sell it."

That's what I want. I want the power and influence to create an avalanche of action from people scrambling to do whatever I'm doing. Millions of people thinking "if he's doing it, then it MUST be the right thing."

I do not expect this to be easy, and I do not expect it to happen overnight. Indeed, I would not say I expect it to happen at all. But that's what I want.
