Why Is Hero Worshiping Dangerous?

I love being inspired by heroes.

I do not worship heroes though.

Worshiping sends out a "Wow. I could NEVER do that type of stuff, or I could NEVER achieve that!", lack and limitation type energy.

You are special. You were born unlimited and remain unlimited until you accept a contrary idea.

Heroes rock. Become inspired by heroes.

But move away from worship. Move toward hero like-ness

Thoughts?

  • I rather like the idea of hero-likeness. Very good clarification of worship verses source of inspiration.

Even heroes, gurus, motivational speakers, etc, themselves don't want to be worshiped.

I remember at a seminar once, one speaker said, "I'm not here to be your guru - I'm merely here to be your tour guide towards success."

If someone points towards the moon as a symbol of success, do you worship their finger or hope to land on the moon?

Worship sounds more like religion or idolatry - mostly out of fear.

I don't like that idea of worshiping. Reminds me of all my years of being preached to by a minister in church: the "worship service".

I love getting inspired though. Huge difference between the two practices. One is almost subservience since the very definition of worship includes adoration of a deity whereas inspiration is the act of being mentally stimulated to do something. I like the one that doesn't include the deity lol

All kidding aside I do find myself thanking the universe or whatever power there is out there for all the success I've had. It's not a rational thing to do but rather an impulse to say thank you to the intangibles of the world that allow me to be me.

Worshipping puts their needs in front of your own.

There are a few guys here on the forum that have been a 'hero' for me... one guy in particular.

I respect him, value his advice, and really appreciate everything he has done.

No doubt I'll be paying that mentorship forward in years to come.

I think that is where you need to be, when looking up to a 'hero'.

        ...

When it comes to those who are worshipping... it's almost a way to procrastinate.

        To put off action...

...yet still feel as though they are progressing.
