How do I negotiate salary during an interview ?

Well, this one questions is often discussed but very rarely we get some good pointers. I took it upon me to find out the actual answer(s), if there exists one.
Most of the people I have spoken to in the regards were either clueless or gave vague answers.Hence, I am turning to the community to look for answers.

Some points that can help in negotiation which I have been able to come up are as follows :

- we should be aware of what the current (salary hike) industry wide trends are
- consider whether a relocation would be involved or not.
- Conveyance expenses would they go up or not
- Whether our skill set is in demand or not
- we should focus more on fixed salary component than variable salary component.

Any more pointers would be welcome.

Thanks !

    Hi,

Just a quick reply to add to your list.

Know what you are worth and be confident of your worth.
Know the salary figure you want (with in limits of your industry and your experience) and be determined to get it.
If you think you can you can.

    Regards
    Rob

First, know that they are offering and your worth. You cannot negotiate on something you don't know.

Very briefly. Expect 100% to get what you ask for. When you're totally congruent in what you expect to receive you give off what are called "BMIR's" (Behavioural manifestations of internal representations)

These are picked up by the interviewer on an unconscious level and fast tracked to their emotional brain where ALL decisions are ultimately made.

It's all psychological but in the end so is all persuasion.

      First we believe.....then we consider.

I would look at the total compensation package:

    Base Salary
    Annual Bonus
    Other Bonus (sales competitions)
    Stock Options
    401K contributions
Health and Wellness (insurance and ongoing programs)
    Life & Accident Insurance
Perks (food, memberships, cell phone, vehicle, discounts, etc. )
    Upward mobility to higher positions

All this depends on the company size, location, industry, etc.
Some times doing what you love and taking a lower salary will lead to promotions after they see your performance and passion for the work.

When I was asked what I wanted to earn I said something similar to this:

I want to earn a salary that is competitive and based on the contributions and responsibilities that I make to your company. What is this position paying?

Then reiterate your main strengths and how you can help them solve their problems.
