Is Multitasking Possible ?

Often I have read in my office :
- "Learn to take up more initiative",
-"learn to manage and multitask".
-I will be honest I don't think we, humans, can multitask though we can switch between various tasks but even then we still do one task at a time.

Can you multitask between various tasks at one time ? What do you have to say on that ?

I can, but not great. One thing at the time! Keep it simple.

I think multi-tasking is possible and expected at many companies. However, with that being said, for a job or task to be properly done on a consistent basis you have to devote the time needed to properly accomplish it. Prioritizing your daily tasks the night before can be a great stress reliever.

I'm not a big believer in multi tasking because it takes away focus and actually takes longer to complete things you are working on. Internet marketers are probably as bad as it gets when they try to multi task. They have too many irons in the fire so to speak.

The solution: Outsourcing is by far the best way to accomplish more and allow you to focus on what you like best, what you do best, what needs to be done, and so on. With sources like Fiverr an oDesk, Easy Outsource etc. we have huge business advantages in terms of multi tasking at prices we can all afford.

        Jeff ,

I've seen many people "attempt" to multi-task in business situations.....

It always seems to take longer...

Every scientific study I've come across where they studied "multi-tasking," it actually took longer than completing tasks "one at a time."

There may be a group of people who can actually "save time" by "multi-tasking." But, they are a very, very small group.

As far as non-business "tasks" such as walking and chewing gum.... That is a different story..... Just about everyone can do that.

multi tasking doesn't work for peak or professional level output ..

but there is a way to plan out how you do thing so you can make passive progress on one task while actively working on another .

humans are natural multitaskers, we breath, think, wink, pump blood, and talk at the same time... it comes by default because they're not conscious habits.

its easy to multitask if what you're doing is not of similar multitude, eg. cook, while cleaning while listening to radio... but women can multitask more

Multitasking is expected at many companies but it is simply not practical. Shared energy across multiple lines not only diffuses it but it also wastes far more energy constantly shifting between the tasks as well. Simple tasks such as walking and chewing gum at the same time are very doable. What is being asked about complex tasks such as operating heavy machinery, chew gum, and resolve marital disputes at the same time is not realistic.

There has also been much research about the difference between men and women and their own ability to multitask. The results shocked me.
