Giving Back...If This Doesn't Inspire You...NOTHING WILL

I know there are a lot of people out there who look at the successful ones
online and say to themselves, "I can't do that. I don't have what it takes."
Or something like that.

You think the successful people were born that way, that they just are
who they are and if you're not successful, it's how you'll always be.

Believe me, I more than can understand the feeling.

See, I was one of those unsuccessful people at one time.

And I'm not just talking about IM. I'm talking about my whole life.

When I graduated college in 1981 (2 years later than I should have because
I was so stupid) I looked for a job for one full year.

I couldn't find a thing. This was during the Jimmy Carter administration
when interest rates were like 18%.

Finally after a year, I went back to school again for something else.

When I got out, the only way I was able to get a job was to lie on my
resume. Yes, I admit it...I was desperate. So I told them I had experience
with a certain computer that I had never even seen before. I was able to
pull it off because the computers I had worked on were similar. So I got
away with it.

But even at that, my first job was a temp job for a lousy $7 a hour.

After a year there, and getting nowhere, I left and took a job teaching
computers that didn't pay much more.

After 2 1/2 years there, the place went belly up and I was out of work again.

I was out of work for almost 2 years before I found another crappy job
for like $17,000 a year.

Mind you, I was a college graduate.

I stayed with this miserable company for almost 10 years until finally, after
working 16 hour days and not even getting a freaking 2 weeks off a year,
I couldn't take it anymore. I had a nervous breakdown and had to quit.

I then went looking for another job.

Nobody would hire me.

I finally went into sales selling environmentally safe products.

I made all of $600.

I finally went back to school again.

I got lucky and got a consulting job looking over a network. It paid well
but it was only a 6 month assignment.

I was back on the street again.

I couldn't find a thing.

Finally I took a job placing labels on law briefs for $7 an hour at some
label place. It was a job that I had to work till midnight.

It was the lowest point of my life.

I finally went back to school, yet again, and FINALLY got a great job
as a QA Tester and eventually manager.

This was 14 years after I had graduated college.

But it only lasted for 6 years.

The company relocated to Pittsburgh and I couldn't go.

I was out of work again...at age 45.

I finally gave up looking for work.

I turned to the computer and the Internet.

My first "job" doing web design, the company I worked for never paid me
for my work.

I then went into marketing.

My first 5 months I made $28.

Do you think maybe I was ready to just put a gun to my head?

46 years of utter failure in my life, as far as my professional life went.

Today, I am 51 years old and earn over 6 figures a year...these days, doing
almost nothing.

I spend most of my time in the recording studio writing songs or playing
video games.

Yes, you absolutely can succeed no matter how much of a miserable
failure you are.

If my life doesn't prove that to you...nothing will.

For people of your age - well I am 53 so not far behind - IM is perfect. You have one huge asset - experience.

You do not need to "try" - just go with the flow. It is all out there.

Thanks for sharing that Steven. It's so easy for each of us to imagine that they have it the worst out of everybody else. You are one of the icons of this forum and an example to follow and yet you have this story behind you... that's pretty incredible.

Also, by an amazing coincidence, sitting around in my studio playing video games also happens to be my ultimate dream, I have a bit of a ways to go yet though

Just curious, but what caused the turn around?

Thanks for this. It just goes to show that if you are willing to put forth hard work (genuine work) and persist that it WILL pay off. It may not happen within the first few months or even the first few years but you can and will make it if you stick with it.

While I am already enjoying mild success currently I remind myself of these points every single day. I tell myself how lucky I am to be able to make a living online and that while some of the work I am doing today may not pay off right away, it will down the line. It is all about putting things into perspective and having to right mindset that will allow you to keep on working.

      Honestly, I have no idea.

      Persistence?

I'm just grateful that things turned around for me and because of that good
fortune I try my best to help others as well, especially those who are
absolutely convinced that making money online is impossible, a scam, or
      whatever.

Hopefully, I'm doing at least some good for somebody.

One of my favorite inspirational quotes...

"Even a blind dog finds a bone sometimes."

As long as you keep looking, you'll eventually find yours.

I'm in a similar boat right now - I've made my bid in several industries and under several business models, and they haven't worked out... usually for reasons beyond my control.

So I've decided to put everything, EVERYTHING, under my control. And this is the only business where I can do that. I want every single failure I have from this point on to be nobody's fault but my own.

Great story. Glad you've found your bone!

Hey Steven... thanks for the post and revealing so much. Yes, it is inspirational for me. I've been working at online business for a very long time. One thing I know for sure, my issues are in my head. It's better now, but I'm my own worst enemy when it comes to online business. I know this to be true.

    See ya...

This post for some reasons reminds me of an old quote that I don't want to butcher so I won't repeat. But it mentions things like if you are blessed (rich) and never help those that need it then why would you beg for a handout when you are in need?

I like inspirational quotes but that one struck a chord in my brain. I already said and stand by my words that the first full check that I get that totals a net of over 10K will be donated fully. I'm thinking 50/50 to diabetes and breast cancer research. ALmost reached that goal and I will open a thread when I get there =D

Hi Steven what a great post!

I have recently found Warrior Forum and find it a fascinating and exciting place to be. I am 53 and recently had to close my kitchen fitting business because of the downturn in the economy.

I have started Internet Marketing and am learning so much from here and other resources whilst creating my own digital products as I go.

I have had a very similar life path to you and will take encouragement from you and build my business with a positive attitude.

    Thanks for sharing your story!

    Cheers Keith

Steven, you are one of the first here in the WF to really get me to dig down and be persistent. The result? Well, I still have a job but I am making money online...and this is to add to your video game love. That is my dream too. And in some ways it just happened. I checked my Clickbank account on Saturday afternoon and I hadn't made a sale yet that day (it happens). I hopped into my current fave video game, Oblivion, played for about an hour and a half. Exited the game and checked my Clickbank account and I had made $40 while I was playing. That, my friend, is the stuff of dreams!

Hi steve love this post. I graduated from an ivy league school in 2005 it has seemed like no one would hire me either and the few times i did get a job i either got fired or the commute was so long and the pay was so bad that i just got further into debt . Now i am 26 and desperately trying to just meet the minimum payments on my loans and credit cards in a job that only pays about 23000 a year. So i thankyou so much for this post if you can do it in your fifties surely i can do it at age 26

Great story... You're doing what you love, and although there was a variety of reasons and principles at work, persistence is what you cited as the key.

After studying Psycho-Cybernetics over 15 years ago, it seems that failure can only be when someone quits.

Everything else is a mis-take, so we got to re-take or re-shoot the scene again.

          Persistence pays... truly.

Clarissa, also coming from NJ, I know what it's like to live here. Been here
all my life. It's a very competitive state and way overpopulated with not
enough jobs to go around, especially in this economy.

Hang in there and don't give up. Like you said, if I can do it, YOU can do it.

You have no idea how happy I am to hear this. I sometimes go out with
my daughter for a couple of hours and come home to so many payment
notifications that it takes me a half hour just to send thank you emails to
everybody. Yes, I still do that manually because I like to respond to
        everybody personally.

        Call me crazy.

Anyway, congrats. Keep at it and you'll see, it only gets better.

Steve, you really have a great story to tell.

It encourages others and reminds them that just being a decent person goes a long way in IM ....and in life.

I try to never miss any of your posts and think the ones where you recount your journey from lack all the way to abundance are some of the best.

Some author (maybe it was Emerson) once said< "Life can either grind you down, or polish you up. It all depends on what you're made of."

thank you for sharing your very inspiring life story Steven. Well done for having persisted through all the downturns to finally emerge to your dream. The IM field can feel pretty isolated and demoralizing when things don't happen as expected and it is inspiring and motivating to hear how you made it through.

I also thought of the Able Lincoln story when I read that post - but you were not as unsuccessful as he was - Lol!

Someone asked if you had a 'turning point' in your life... I agree with your reply that there usually is not any one given 'moment' or 'event' that turns your life around on a dime.

All my life I have been a huge fan of trying every self improvement tool I can get my hands on, and getting coaching by the best that I can afford and even the ones I couldn't (yet) afford, as it usually pays off spectacularly.

It is the accumulation of experiences and 'failures' that force us to expand our skills base and stretch our mental abilities, until finally we meld into someone who finally 'gets it' and starts to succeed more than they fail.

Its so important to not wait around for 'success' before you begin your plans and projects, but to just go ahead without it and it will catch up with you eventually - lol!

Above all, isn't life just a blooming amazing journey?!?!?
