What Books to Read on Metaphysics?

In response to the LoA thread that got bumped yesterday, I was wondering: what books should I check out to get a well-rounded understanding of "metaphysics"? The thread referenced books like Think and Grow Rich, The Science of Getting Rich, and the ever-popular The Secret. However, I heard people who seemed to be adherents to LoA saying it was oversimplified in The Secret, hence the desire to find books that represent it accurately.

So, if you were trying to educate me on metaphysics and convince me it's the foundation on which the world works, to which books would you refer me?

    Hi Salada325,

I would refer you to these books:

The Power of Self Mind Control by Burt Goldman

Metaphysics: A Very Short Introduction by Stephen Mumford

    The Alchemist by Paul Coelho

    I hope these help.

Ah, very good! The "Very Short Introduction" series seems to be pretty useful from what I've heard.

I noticed when looking at the Goldman book that he's connected with one Jose Silva, author of The Silva Mind Control Method of Mental Dynamics. Have you read that before? Any thoughts?

I have not read Jose Silvers book, it is on my list of books to read. I am actually looking at his work at the moment and practising his centering exercise which I am finding beneficial.

Burt Goldman used to be one of the top instructors for the Silva Method and he wrote a book about it with Jose, so I would imagine they are similar in content.

I think the easiest way to introduce you to LoA as a life manifestation would be a movie rather than a book:

What The Bleep Do We Know!?

Scientifically examines how our thoughts affect reality.

A practical application of LoA can be found in the book:

The Law of Attraction Made Simple By Jonathan Manske

I could point you to more metaphysical books if that isn't enough. I think aiming yourself in a direction of how LoA can be real at all can be conceived through the above mentioned examples.

I personally found the book to be seriously helpful in the application of LoA

Focusing too much on the metaphysics might drive you on other non-relevant tangents.

**I am a university philosophy major so this would directly apply to me lol

The Secret Of The Ages, Robert Collier. I'm reading it now. I've read dozens of metaphysical books and this one is exceptional.

So is The Science Of Getting Rich and The Sermon On The Mount by Emmet Fox. Here's a link to The Secret of The Ages, free PDF...

Maybe not directly related to metaphysics, but I actually like Tony Robbins when it comes to business and attraction of money/success etc.

I read "the secret" and actually found it to be a watered down version of buddhism in many ways!

Before I render my opinion on the subject, please allow a little background so you know where this is coming from.

I started studying Metaphysics in 1965 under the careful eye of local hypnotherapist Fran Renner. I was 15. In 1969 I was in the Navy stationed at Newport News VA, every weekend I'd go to Virginia Beach to study at the Edgar Cayce center and at a Virginia Beach metaphysical bookstore.

In 1973, out of the Navy, I spent many months in San Francisco with Russell Thomas, a Metaphysician with a book store, library and training center a couple of blocks from Union Square.

I've read and studied almost every book and personality in the game.

I am a fan of Robert Collier, Secret of the Ages is a good one to have. But I also know the back story on his illness which led him to explore occult subjects.

There is one man who has had the most influence over the New Thought Movement, occult and metaphysical teachings. He is THE one to start with.

His name is William Walker Atkinson, here is ONE link to his work, Google him and find other free work by him.

Now a warning, studying this stuff could be a rabbit hole, easy to get lost in it and to find as many bizarre things as Alice did in Wonderland.

Have a purpose for your studies. I suggest RESULTS as a good goal. Russel Thomas taught me to look at the fruit of the tree before eating from it.

I was also introduced to early Scientology and Jose Silva Mind studies, San Francisco in the early 70's was a hotbed for these things.

Keep this in mind, there isn't a good reason to PAY for much of anything, especially expensive courses and such, when the body of work is readily available for free, but, first... write out YOUR answers to these questions:

    What do you want? Why?

Real science was separated long ago from Philosophy. Science is an empirical study. There are different branches of study in Metaphysics. By definition, "REAL" science is a separate thing. Those works are Pop Science tomes with mass market appeal.

Even today's advanced studies in neuroscience and the measurement of brain activity doesn't answer the philosophical questions of philosophy (metaphysics).
