Several years ago I thought that something was wrong with me. That I needed "fixing."

So I began reading Personal Development books looking to improve myself. I read everything from "Think And Grow Rich" to "Psycho-Cybernetics." And, while these books were packed with good information, I never figured out how to feel "successful."

However, ultimately, what I learned is that there was nothing wrong with me. I didn't need "fixing." It was my low self-esteem that convinced me that something was lacking. And, as my self-esteem increased, my desire to try and "improve myself" disappeared.

Now don't get me wrong, I love reading Personal Development books because there's so much to learn from them. However, they won't fundamentally change who you are. Have the courage to be yourself and the grace to accept yourself. (Including all of your little imperfections.)

Here's one of my favourite quotations by Marianne Williamson:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.

Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
—Marianne Williamson

i hit that point over a year ago..

when i took the multiple elements of my personality that are considered dis-orders out of the bad piles ..and laid them on the table as things that had both advantages and disadvantages ..then observed events and conditions ..to get a better grasp on how i am best meant to function ..it really altered the action i took. what i put up with from others ..and the shape of the dreams and goal i have .

develop and improve based of your areas of mastery and partner with others according to their masteries

      LOL.

To the original poster, though, I'm glad you found the key to happiness: self acceptance. Although I would argue that psycho cybernetics teaches just that. Easily my favorite self development read and, in my opinion, the only one you need to get the ball rolling.

nahh it teaches me how much not having money sucks.

for me the lack of money was to prevent me from getting into drug drinking and other self destructive behaviours ..to cope with how broken i felt .

as i have shifted my outlook .. and stayed broke ..the lessons in the shifting have been to show me i don't need near as much money.. or that a lot of the things i thought i couldn't work on without money ..

turns out there i quite a bit i was able to work on with no money .

now the tap is about to open up so i won't be broke for much longer

Every problem is an opportunity. Whether you choose to think of it as that or not is at your discretion.

peraculture ..or forest farming ..has a core tenant that the problem is the solution ..and on a personal level..the last year or so of putting order to the"problems" that resulted from mismanagement of my conditions ..and pulling out negative beliefs while working on feeding my mind and body properly ..i have come across many opportunties that suit me or will suit me as i build skills and resources .

The thread makes lot of sense. There shall be personal development book from this viewpoint very soon.

What I got from this post

... working your ass off is a better pill than reading self development books, meeting counselors then probably psychologists and psychiatrists.

nothing to do with working your ass off ..everything to do with no feeling like an ass ..trying to fix yourself into being something you where not meant to be .

imagine if tiger woods had decided to play a sport besides golf ..because when he was young and playing it was really only a sport for white businessmen .

most people are trying to fix themselves to be better sheep to get the best jobs they can get ..so they can be sheered and milked..then slaughtered when the company is done with them .

there are wat to many people trying to fix themselve and be big thinking entrepenuers ..when the really just want to build a lifestyle business that replaces the need for a job ..but if you have no interest in becoming rich..you are supposedly broken and excepting failure .

most people are trying to fix themselve to become more successful and many end up with more stuff and lonely and medicated .

now there are thing that need to be fixed ..but it is not you ..it is pulling out the wiring in your mind that makes you believe you are broken and many time hinders real growth ..you can find these .. really easy..by looking at your should and what you say after the but ..because these are the places we vocalaize what we really believe .

write down a goal ..in a very raw form ..that comes to mind ..

say randomly ."i want to travel and live on the beach in tropical countries and live in a luxury apartment "

in most cases you can pull this off for 30-40 k a year 20k if you go for less luxury .

now if that interests you .. two things happen..i list of buts show up after ..and then the editing begins based on a list of shoulds because the low cost involved and in america we judge quality based on price

Every emotion... every experience is an equal creation.

They take the same amount of energy to manifest.

It's only when you can appreciate what you otherwise judge or label as being bad that change is easy.

You're not broken. Limitation - of any kind - is simply not acknowledging how powerful you really are.

Thanks for that quote. I agree with you about the importance of self-esteem how it affects our behaviour. One thing I've noticed over the years is that when you start reading self-development books you go excited but in reality you don't change that fast, it takes a few years to start seeing real changes, the type of changes that make you commit to life long learning and constant improvement. Changes that make you stop reading and start living as fully as you never believed you could!

That is true!, the only one stopping us is ourselves, believing that this only what we can do or give, but we can be more if we only see ourselves valuable more than we can imagine, we have a purpose, God did not create us in this world without a reason.

sadly most of us are trap from what we do not have instead of being grateful of what we have now! because what we have now is our resources for our success!
