Everyone asks why I use this photo as my background... here's the reason

Yesterday, a friend noticed my desktop background, and asked me why I chose that picture.

Knowing me, he expected something motivational.

Maybe a quote from a bodybuilder, or something from Confucius.

He didn't this expect photograph of a POW:

So why do I use this image?

I'm not a soldier.

I can't relate to being a POW.

But I understand defiance.

Now, I don't have the balls to do what this man did - to stare a man in the eyes, knowing he can kill me whenever he wants. Maybe someday.

But it's what I aspire to.

I'm in IM because I value being self-sufficient. And when people tell me I need to get a regular job and drive to work every day and work towards having a little house on a hill, I get belligerent.

I'm carving my own path, and I won't let a thousand voices convince me otherwise.

Maybe I don't have the courage to defy "authority" like this POW, but it's what I'm aiming at.

I will be myself, no matter what it takes.

    I think you are comparing situations you shouldn't, but all in all, it's good that you get motivation and move forward. And you shouldn't be closed to all advices you get from people

      Maybe it is not so much a comparison as to a concept.
      If comparing anything, comparing courage and attitude no matter how difficult the situation.
