40 Ways To Stop Procrastinating

I'm pretty new to the self-improvement game (as in I thought it was a whole load of BS for ages, putting it in the same basket as horoscopes etc ... and boy did my girlfriend give me a load of crap for it )

However, I've been finding myself lagging behind in my Internet marketing and "real world" work for a while now, and have been spending the last few months really working on improving myself.

This has translated into my IM, where I've seen a big improvement in my performance just by taking more action. Just yesterday I had my best ever day on my 3D Printing website, with 5,500 UVs (having grown from about 100 UV daily 6 months ago) ... this stuff works!

Anyway, one of the self-help newsletters I'm subscribed to sent a link out to this new blog post (called 40 Super-Effective Ways To Stop Procrastinating)

Probably one of the better blog posts I've read on the subject. It's seriously long (about 7000 words or something) but is more informative than most self-help kindle or Clickbank books I've read.

I've found myself using a number of the strategies it suggest over the past few months, and with great success.

If you've got a spare hour I suggest taking a read. I even shared it on my own blog (something I very rarely do).

    Thank you for sharing this, and I hope many benefit from this.

    Self Improvement is a wonderful topic to learn and understand more of. Keep it up!

    Have to admit, I do get tired of the 40-steps to..., 100 ways to...type articles and blog posts. Nobody has time to apply (or even read through 40 steps...)

    What would be of real value is to have the top 3 ways to...and then get to the crux of how people really successfully use that method.

    For example, "quit being a perfectionist" is simple to say to a perfectionist, but that is their life-long habit - it can't be overcome just by telling them to.

    I have been able to overcome most procrastination in my life (still a daily battle), and it really came down to 3-things:

    1. Getting to a really clear and emotionally driven WHY that backs up whatever goals I'm trying to reach (so that when I have the choice of watching tv, surfing the net, doing something else the pain of ignoring progress toward my most urgent goals is too great in most cases)

    2. Momentum...taking action (any action) toward your goal and then keeping that momentum. It's when we lose momentum that we experience pain around feeling like a failure or uncertainty that our goals can be reached that really stalls our progress - in comes procrastination

    3. Daily role models and inspiration. I make sure that I have sources of inspiration daily (contacts, videos, biography, friends) that I surround myself with to keep my goals in clear sight and keep my challenges in perspective.

    That's it...40 things (even 10 things) is too overwhelming and impossible for most people to implement.

      Yeah I'm sick to death of "XX ways/tips/tricks/things" blog posts (especially ones that use words like "strange" or "you won't believe" in the title).

      My belief is that click-baiting content ... ie the cornerstone of content marketing these days ... has really reduced the value of a lot of content. I would much rather a single topic point be covered in massive detail, than all that thin-but-thick content, if you catch my drift.

      However, that 40 ways blog post was pretty decent so I thought it was well worth the share.

    One good way to stop procrastinating is to do things now.

    Most people say that they want to wait for the right moment to take action. But the truth is that many will never get the timing to be just right and never take any action.

    They don't have the money right now so they will wait for it.
    They don't have the time so when they do, they will take action.

    Start right now. Just do it.

      I agree. I think this can apply to everything in your life. When I get a bill or piece of mail, I handle or pay it on the spot, for example.

      When I get an email I address it right then by responding (quick!) or deleting.

      A good rule of thumb is that if you are not going to use stuff within a year, you never will, so toss! Handle things as they arise!

      If you throw every task that arises on the to-do list, it will soon be a mile long and most will become paralyzed and put things off even more.

    For me the definition of procrastination is making the decision to do something later. (Despite the fact that it needs to be done now).

    So to resolve this issue, we just need to take action whether we want it or not.

      I don't think you should conflate memory with procrastination ... but I do get where you're coming from.

      It probably would have been a better article had he provided 10 or 20 different methods.

      How to procrastinate. Go to a site with 40 ways to stop procrastinating and spend time reading them all -- the OP said to take about an hour. You should be able to get out of a few things that way.

    I've gone thru this procrastination game with my psych. You can't stop it right now. Unless you move to different country start a new job in completely different field, etc. The only real way out is slowly changing your mental habits. For me Vipassana mediation worked great. For other people some other kind of psychotraining might suit better. In my case it took 2-3 months to get complete control over procrastination. I had to be really ascetic at this period - no news, no Facebook, no TV. But it had been completely worth it

      Yeah it's definitely all about changing your mental habits.

      I think kicking "digital distractions" is the crucial part for me ... I'm always sidetracked by Facebook, Twitter etc.
