Former British tennis number 1 Elena Baltacha has died. She was only 30 and died from liver cancer.

Her peak ranking was 49, so she never got the highest of the highs, but her reputation in the sport was a strong one. She was a battling competitor who came back after many injuries and illness, and was always smiling and approachable.

Also, former number 1 sounds a bit negative - she was actually British number 1 for 3 years, not bad, to say the least, to be the best in your country for that long, eh?

She also put in a lot of work bringing youngsters through the sport.

I doubt there'll be 5 page supplements in the papers like you get for drug overdosing celebs, so I thought it was well worth giving a nod here to an inspirational young woman, who really was a role model to look to.

RIP Elena.

Yes, I read that this morning, and it made me stop to think for a moment.

It made me think of how quickly it happened (didn't she find out in March?). She was also young.

It reminds me of the star of the hit show Spartacus, who died of cancer a year or two ago. The guy was young and in phenomenal shape. He had a tattoo that said "Be Here Now."

Last year a former colleague of mine, a man who'd given me some needed advice when I needed it, was extremely worried after getting laid off from his job. He worried constantly about the job market, benefits, etc., etc., etc.

I learned last week that he died...in his sleep. Just like that.

I thought about how much he worried last year and I wondered, what difference do those worries make NOW? Not one bit of difference. All the worrying for nothing. He was 52, and very fit. His 17 year old daughter died about 3 months prior from brain cancer.

Worry/stress is self-created resistance to what IS. Basically, we are disagreeing with the moment, as it is. Life gave us this moment, and we wanted something different.

I can't help but think of a young person like that, an athlete, and I often wonder what she worried about, what stresses she was under, and I know that none of it matters now. And I'll bet none of it mattered to her, either, once she got such news in March.

Sorry to hear that. Time is promised to no one. We all need to take advantage of our time here on earth and not have any regrets no matter how long we live.
